A frame of Duke Devlin that makes him less pretty?! Well that's just a travesty!

So far from my perusal of reactions to DSOD, I’ve discovered the following factions. The movie seems to have made EVERYBODY angry and also happy depending on where you look.

EDIT: I wonder if anyone ever added up all the cards characters used through a Yu-Gi-Oh arc to see if it ended up at 40 XD

Yugi seems to have the most cards per season/arc since he’s the main character, followed by Joey and Kaiba.

BTW, after some consultation on Ask The Tropers and a few days of thinking, I've decided to remove a lot of the YMMV entries that are based on reactions to the recaps rather than reactions to the movie or trailers itself. The recaps don't always have everything, and these people might not speak Japanese, so they are only interpreting. Only put up reactions from people who have actually seen the movie.

That would be for the best. No reason to even entertain the early reactions really.

Kaiba drinking water has become a minor meme among people wanting to see the movie XD Apparently it was touched on in one of the first recaps and the thought of it captured everyone's attention.

EDIT: I think Darkside of Dimensions has the worst thing Yami Bakura’s ever done. In the manga and anime he was a nasty piece of work already, but here he kills Shadi, who was a guardian to a bunch of young children, taunts the kids as they cry over his corpse, and then goes to attack and presumably kill them, with Aigami and Sera being the only survivors. Ryou was only four years old at the time, too.

I wonder how many Yami Bakura fans are now ex-fans XD;

I'm a tad annoyed that:

  • a) Aigami is a fucking jobber. Seriously, he loses EVERY single duel in the movie. That's not really a way to build up the antagonist (I'm assuming that's what he is).
  • b) Kaiba's VR tech no-sells Aigami's supernatural cube powers. Not to mention pulling Obelisk out of his ass (ancient Egyptian bullshit or not).
  • c) Joey doesn't do shit.

Anyway. I'm confused about Shadi. Unless I'm remembering wrong, I was under the assumption that Yami/Thief King Bakura killed him in ancient Egypt (3000 years before the series starts) and destroyed his corpse, hence why he's basically a wandering spirit. Now according to the movie he was killed much more recently (more than 10-12+ years before the series starts).

What was in your right hand is hope; And in another hand is something else to fade.

he says something about him being dead five years ago in the manga, or 'five years ago he was already...' back in dk when he's wandering around pegasus' place.

at least i think it was five. but ryou wouldn't allegedly look as young as he does in dsod if that was only five years ago.

[up][up] The manga implied Yami Bakura killed him around 5-ish years ago when he hears Marik's backstory, and also says that Shadi was a spirit who pledged loyalty to the Pharaoh's bloodline and used that form to serve him.

The anime implied he was killed by Thief King Bakura: "Actually, I'm a centuries-old spirit. My earthly body was destroyed by a tomb robber named Bakura." (No one in Yu-Gi-Oh can count, so they say centuries when they mean millennia XD The games have the same problem too!)

I wrote a fanfic about Shadi using the 'TKB killed him' backstory that combined the manga, anime, and Capsule Monsters. It was inspired by one line in Eternal Duelist Soul where Shadi's pleased that you're dueling him because it offers relief from boredom. I was like "Wow, I feel bad for Shadi now. This explains so much!" and went from there XD

[up]Oh, is that why Shadi thought it'd be a good idea to show Pegasus where the Egyptian Gods were sealed away? He just got really bored one day?

I've got Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash, Spyro, and Paper Mario fanfics.

Isn't Shadi the reincarnation of the guy who formerly wielded the Millennium Key? He'd have to be after Atem's time if so.

lalalei2001 Since: Oct, 2009
#2536: May 2nd 2016 at 5:03:41 PM

[up] Shimon, the pre-incarnation of Yugi's grandpa, originally wielded the Key before giving it to Shada, and Karim had the Scales. Shada was a red herring, though, as though he looked and sounded like Shadi they weren't related, and in the RPG he got killed by Zorc. He was BFFs with Priest Seto, though.

The Yu-Gi-Oh wiki says the following: "Pharaoh Akhenamkhanen sacrificed part of his soul to seal a spirit in the Millennium Stone. That spirit was Hasan, who vowed to protect the Pharaoh, and eventually perished at the hands of Zorc, protecting the Pharaoh. From the afterlife, Shadi pledged to the will of Pharaoh Akhenamkhanen. He took it as his duty to protect Akhenamkhanen's son, Atem, the next Pharaoh, who he vowed to protect 3,000 years ago."

Shadi is just really confusing in general.

I thought that after he was killed by Zorc, Shada reincarnated as Shadi, who then died and became a ghost. Is that not right?

We'll never know what "really" happened since the Memory World was an RPG. Anything could've happened XD;

I think Shadi's bio on our character pages says it best.

"Shadi has the reputation for being the most confusing character in the entire franchise thanks to his enigmatic nature and for having four identities associated with him (Child Shadi, Adult Shadi, Hassan and Bobasa). The conflicting, bare-bones backstories between adaptations don't help."

[up] I think that's mostly cause he's a jerk. Especially where Marik and Pegasus are involved. The bunkoban had to revise some of his dialogue concerning Marik—in the original Shadi said that Marik's father was driven to his death by the soul of the Pharaoh; it was revised to have him say that the tragedy of the family that divides their relatives with blood was the will of the Pharaoh. And in DSOD, Aigami and Bakura's fates were his fault—he gave Aigami the cube and incomplete information about the other dimensions, driving him to believe the other world was better than Yugi's world, and encouraged Bakura's dad to put the ring on, knowing it would most likely kill him..

I think the theory itself had something to do with him brainwashing Yugi's friends to test the Pharaoh and nearly killing Tea, creating villains for the Pharaoh to fight, Pegasus saying that ALL the Items possessed an evil intelligence, and no one calling Shadi out on his role in what happened in anyone's backstory. (Not even the narrative.) At least he didn't cause Thief King Bakura's backstory.

EDIT: After talking with many fans from several different corners of the fandom (fans of one character, fans of a couple, fans that like everyone, etc) we concluded that DSOD made almost EVERYONE unhappy. The Kaiba/Atem shippers were mostly happy with the movie, but fans seem divided now more than ever before.

DOUBLE EDIT: For the longest time I misinterpreted ‘Marik stabbed people with a dagger hidden inside the Rod’ as ‘Marik stabbed people with the pointy end of the Rod.’

I get the feeling Yami Bakura didn’t really have a plan at times and just did whatever was convenient at the time. On the plus side it made him good at improvising. On the down side, his plan to steal all the Items failed completely and he had to trick Yugi into doing his work for him.

EDIT: This Yu-Gi-Oh TCG news confirms The Darkside of Dimensions will release next year in the US. Here’s hoping it’s EARLY next year XD (The tins release in September!)

Added more recaps to the Toei anime's page. While watching the series I noticed that Joey being less awesome than in the manga was not just something the second-series anime did.

He was the only one injured during Death-T 1 and Miho saved the day, he was beaten up by Kaiba's guards and the model Aileen Rao, got beaten up by the Kageyama Sisters, and rolled a 99 in Monster World out of fear that he'd be turned into a figurine.

Also, I found it funny that despite Miho being added to the main cast she still rarely got to do anything. In Monster World her only contribution to the first big fight scene is finding money.

Miho was never more than a side character in the manga, so I'm not surprised she didn't do anything in the bandai anime.

[up] She did some stuff, but mostly in filler.

This interview with Kazuki Takahashi is interesting to dissect now that DSOD is out, especially this bit.

Interviewer: What would you say is the theme for Yu-Gi-Oh the Movie?

Takahashi: I have my own theme for this work, but I feel like it’s best left for the viewing audience to decide on their own. It’s taking elements from the original Yu-Gi-Oh manga, so it’ll be a lot darker of a story!

He says DSOD takes elements from the manga before saying it’s a direct continuation, and the viewers being left to decide what the theme is was probably made with the ending in mind XD I wonder what HE decided its theme was.

EDIT: Apparently he was starting to forget what happened in the manga and presumably had to reread it XD;

So, if Kaiba is going as far as to bust into the afterlife in his obsession to duel and defeat Atem, what's he going to do IF he finally does beat him? If he beats Atem, he's going to have a And Then What?? moment has he realizes that now he has nothing left (he left the entire company to Mokuba, basically giving up on life, it's unknown if Kaiba is still actually alive, it's unknown if that was a one-way trip only).

What was in your right hand is hope; And in another hand is something else to fade.
