Uh... can you make one up? That sounds like the best option to me. Plus, if her lineage is a plot point, just making up a clan would avoid a lot of headaches. You can make the clan fit your specifications without having to worry about offending real people or messing up the details specific to the clan.

As long as she is not from a daimyo clan, making one up should not be a problem.

Okay, so my MC is japanese. at this point she is most likely from Kyushu.
She is descended from a samurai family—it's a plot point— but my head is spinning trying to sort through all the different clans and family names and regions.
Right now her family name is Kida, which isn't a samurai clan (as far as I can tell) but I figure the noble family name may not be used anymore and been replaced or something.
I dunno. I'm trying to do my research but I think i'm being hit with culture shock and the fact that I am seriously unacquainted with japanese....everything, basically.
