i think it's mostly a gainax thing, though i believe rahxephon has a few like that.

Isn't just a movie poster thing? I seem to recall that some of the posters for other animes with movies (say Madoka), were like that also.
Good examples. those were the ones I couldn't think of the names of.

Asuras Wrath, particularly the promotional artwork, does the same thing.
It's a trend amongst the hardcore style anime crowd, as Ghost In The Shell and the Akira movie had similar posters.

I've noticed a couple of anime that have this sort of "theatrical poster". Gurren Lagann, FLCL... er... while the rest aren't coming to mind, they're drawn in this "hard/dark" style (read: I don't do anime or animation reviews) where the characters and background look very hardcore.
