Self Demonstrating Folder Titles

At the insistence of Fighteer, the self-demonstrating folder titles were removed from Wild Teen Party and SelfDemonstrating.Wild Teen Party was created, with the only difference being that the Self-Demonstrating one has the self-demonstrating folder titles. I agree with another mod, SeptimusHeap, who said in that ATT that the folder titles didn't impede readability, and I think they should be restored and the redundant Self-Demonstrating page cut unless someone wants to make it actually self-demonstrating.

I agree with you but the consensus in that ATT thread was against your opinion.

There were users on both sides and no real consensus either way: Fighteer just made a mod decision to change them, then another mod said he didn't have a problem with them, then a third mod essentially said Fighteer can't make up rules like that.

Is the only difference between those two pages the folder titles? That's about as pointless a Self Demonstrating page as I've ever seen...I'd nuke that page and stick with the non-SD version.

The unique folder titles aren't obtrusive; can't we just restore them to the main trope page?

I found it rather rude that you tried to make up wiki policy on the spot on that ATT query and ignored the input of Septimus Heap, who's also a mod. I don't appreciate your sarcastic tone now, either. The consensus of this thread is that self-demonstrating folder titles are fine as long as they're not intrusive.

The most problematic word to define here is "intrusive", as it's a matter of opinion.

The titles changing folder order, for instance, would be intrusive under my definition but not some others.

The Wild Teen Party folder titles didn't change the order.

I don't think these are that intrusive since the regular terms are still on the folders. If you just modify the music and film ones a little bit they're literaly the same as usual but with some dumb addition after it. Shaped Like Itself and Department of Redundancy Department are definitely worse and they're still up fwiw.

Maybe we could put all the offending pages in a crowner and vote on whether to keep them that way?

Having a redundant Self-Demonstrating trope page just to preserve the goofy folder titles is clearly suboptimal.

I don't particularly care whether the main page has goofy folder titles or not, but I am strongly in favor of cutting the Self-Demonstrating page.

Agreed, the "Self-Demonstrating" page is totally redundant. I think the self-demonstrating folder titles were unobtrusive and should be restored to the main trope page, but that's up to this thread's consensus.

I've never found self-demonstrating folder titles to be particularly worthwhile or amusing, especially because they distort the effective standard labels, no matter how subtly, and that can get annoying. I get that this site fosters an air of fun and informality, but I'm not a supporter of SD folder titles. As for making a separate SD page to basically archive the version with the titles...that seems like a waste of a page and looks like the product of people who just couldn't let the titles go. It looks like stubbornness if that's all the SD page is going to exist for. I do agree that SD content should be sequestered to its own namespace if it must exist, but at the same time, using the namespace just to keep the version with the folder titles feels wrong.

Seems obvious to change. It obfuscates which folder is which.

I'll once again bring up Gratuitous German, which has the same problem and changes folder order to fit the self-demonstration.

That, too, should drop the self-demonstration.

I'd be fine with removing Your Little Dismissive Diminutive custom folder names as it's going a little too far, but I'd keep Gratuitous German as is, except maybe changing back to English alphabetisation (Everything Sounds Sexier in French succeeded in that). German has been called pretty similar to English for good reason - several words have rather obvious parallels. You can't tell me that "Anime und Manga", "Comic-Buecher", "Filme", "Literatur", "Musik", "Profi-Ringen", "Videospiele", "Wahres Leben", and probably a few others can really be confused for what they are, they sound similar enough to English counterparts or have rather obvious connections.

Can we talk about Buffy Speak? Some of these folders and subpage links are indecipherable.

For example, can you guess what "The Thingies Made By People Who Love Thingies" goes to without checking the page?

Tropes about being unclear should never have self-demonstrating pages, for obvious reasons.

I'm guessing it's Fan Works.

"Profi-Ringen", "Videospiele", and "Wahres Leben" are things I fear may not be obvious as German-to-English cognates.

Those three you've mentioned are pretty easy to guess, they're slightly different but still not too hard to realise what they are by logic (profi, video and leben seem like rather similar words to their English counterparts). The only ones that don't seem obvious are "Buehnenstuecke", "Werbung", and "Zeitungskarikaturen" because to be frank, those are rather different and I understand being confused by those (by the way, I did study German for a bit, but I can't really say I'm at a level higher than lower intermediate, so I think I'd figure out what most are even if I didn't).

I studied German a bit, too, and I can concede to all but "Leben" for "life". Perhaps we could add notes like on Gratuitous Japanese?

Yeah, that sounds like a great idea. And maybe do the same thing with Gratuitous French and probably a few others.
