I use pretty much everything I listen to as background music, but I think nothing serves that purpose better than Vaporwave:
I don't have any particular background music that I go to...it's usually whatever's on my mind to listen to. That said, I had a good time listening to one of Sirius' music channels that leaned toward black and death metal while I was working on my 40K models a while back, so I may stick with that in the future.
The ultimate background music for me is something unobtrusive that I can still enjoy even when I concentrate on it.
So, mostly ambient. Steve Roach is usually my best bet. Matthias Grassow, Michael Mantra as well. Anything on labels like Hypnos, Silentes, Sending Orbs, Hearts of Space/Fathom, Silent, etc.
Also highly recommended, some pretty darn excellent background noise in the form of the Soma.fm radios Drone Zone and Deep Space One.

You are standing in an open field west of a white house, with a boarded front door. There is a small mailbox here.
This is the Background Music Thread! Do you have certain songs that you put on in the background when you're doing something, or just sound better when they're not in focus? Post them here.
I listen to The Trapeze Swinger when I write, and I also like listening to George Michael's cover of Tonight when I'm busy.
