In the year 2060, Earth was plagued with overpopulation, poverty, ecological damage, tyranny, war and dirty telephones. Civilization was collapsing, humanity itself facing extinction was a distinct possibility, and the entire planet was on the verge of being rendered uninhabitable. Well-meaning organizations struggled to salvage the fate of humankind, but the state of affairs seemed only to worsen day by day.

Seeking any means of escaping the total destruction of their species, the nations of Earth - at least, the ones who could still cooperate - pooled their resources together for the Unity project. The idea of the project was to build a massive starship, load as many humans aboard as possible, and send it to the life-supporting planet Chiron in the Alpha Centauri system to establish a colony. This way, even if Earth itself was destroyed, humans could live on light-years away.

This plan worked at first. Millions of people made the voyage through the depths of space, and the leadership of the charismatic Captain Nine-Tailed Cat was able to keep everything in working order. Although the officers differed greatly in ideals and approaches, their Captain managed to prevent any serious disputes. Prospects were looking good.

However, as soon as the ship neared Chiron, everything started going wrong.

Unexpectedly, a meteorite struck the Unity, causing malfunctions to important systems including the engines. While the crew struggled to fix the situation, an unknown individual assassinated Captain Nine-Tailed Cat. The entire ship fell into chaos, with the once-united officers quarrelling furiously with one another over the right approach to the situation. In the confusion, the problems aboard escalated until they had a full-on reactor failure on their hands. There was no choice but to abandon the ship.

Each officer or other person of influence gathered a group of loyal followers, then took an escape pod and broke for the planet below. Most of the pods did not survive the descent through the atmosphere or were destroyed upon landing, but eleven survived, each with a newly-formed faction and their new leaders:

• CEO Brahian of Brahian Industries, primarily interested in making big profits and gaining influence.
• Brother C0mraid of the Lord's Believers, intent on upholding the ideals and morals of religion.
• Earl Sandvich of the Cybernetic Consciousness, dedicated to pure rationality and the fusion of human and machine.
• Captain Ichigo Pocky Chama of the Nautilus Pirates, concerned primarily with plundering the wealth of the seas.
• Colonel Jondanger of the Spartan Federation, who sees military readiness and strength as the key to survival.
• Commisioner Makeyejr of the Peacekeeping Forces, whose goal is to uphold the UN Charter and maintain order.
• Sir NES Gamer of Gaia's Stepchildren, seeking to live in harmony with nature and protect Planet's ecology.
• Provost Speedchesser of the University of Planet, who values the pursuit of scientific knowledge above all.
• Commander Surt of the 463 Raiders, a new leader with a mysterious but aggressive agenda.
• Foreman Hobo Tortle of the Free Drones, who puts the rights of the working class before anything else.
• Datajack Zero Dark Flirty of the Data Angels, focused on the freedom of both individuals and information.

Now, stranded on a distant planet infested with native fungus and psychic worms, these eleven factions began a struggle to survive and uphold their principles. Every leader desired to unite what was left of humanity once again, but unite them following their ideals, and only one set of ideals could prevail. Thus began the struggle for dominance over this new world, and for the future of our kind...

Sorry for the delay. I had a bit of computer trouble. Anyways...

During a patrol along the coast near Sparta Command, a recon rover squad noticed a transport foil bearing an unfamiliar emblem approaching the shore. Shortly afterwards, a group of soldiers disembarked, and their leader saluted the Spartans.

"Good day. Our leader wishes to speak with yours. Could you provide his commlink frequency?"

After some consideration, the Spartan officer in charge complied. A few moments later, back at their base, Colonel Jondanger was greeted by a familiar face on his comm.

"Ah, the vigilant Colonel Jondanger," said the woman on screen. "I trust that your military preparations are going smoothly. I am Captain Ichigo of the Nautilus Pirates."

"Well met, Captain," he replied. "As I recall, you understood the value of strength. What do you want from me?"

"It's a simple matter. My enemy, Datajack Zero Dark Flirty, has been threatening my territories. Perhaps we could assist each other in defeating him?"

The Colonel smiled. "Naturally. I never thought much of that lunatic, always drooling over his computer terminal. Let us unite against him!"

Thus, the two armies launched attacks on the Data Angels. From the sea, the computer pirates found themselves being overwhelmed by proper pirates, and on land, the hackers were being hacked apart by trained Spartan warriors. It wasn't long before Data DeCentral had fallen, the Datajack had been taken prisoner, and the two temporary allies were discussing when to schedule his execution.

The Consciousness had chosen to focus its energy on peacefully gaining knowledge. Right now, understanding the mysteries of the planet they had landed on was more important to them than politics.

Unfortunately, someone had other ideas.

The armies of the Raiders poured down from the nearby hills onto the Consciousness bases, with cries of "Die, you mechanical menaces!" Having focused all of their resources on building Network Nodes and other base facilities, the cyborgs hadn't been able to produce many soldiers, and Commander Surt's forces quickly overwhelmed them. Alpha Prime was utterly obliterated, and Earl Sandvich was put to a slow death by electrical torture.

During their initial explorations, University scouts encountered a group of Mind Worms. Curious about their psychic abilities, the researchers brought them back to study them more closely.

It was a sad oversight on part of Provost Speedchesser that the lab holding the worms did not have proper containment. Soon, the worms broke free, and their powers brought complete chaos to University Base. By the time they were done, not one of the scientists was left alive.

...huh. Jon and I teamed up to kill someone again.

And wow, only three dead? Impressive.

Yeah, not many people sent in their actions that time. I guess people were distracted. Hopefully, this next round should make up for it.

Hmm. Weird.

Yeah... kind of the case for me.

After their short stint as aggressors, the 463 Raiders were facing aggression themselves. CEO Brahian had discovered the Raiders had access to an abundant source of energy, and intended for his company to claim it by hook or by crook.

Commander Surt, however, was not one to take this lying down. He quickly contacted another faction leader who he felt could help.

"Sir NES, I require the aid of your environmentally sensitive followers," said Surt. "CEO Brahian has attacked my holdings. Can you help me fight off these aggressions?"

NES looked skeptical. "Gaia's Stepchildren are not mercenaries, Commader. Why should we do this for you?"

"Would you rather we be conquered by a corporation that cares for nothing but money? You know of their polluting factories and their destructive Free Market economic policies. If they took over, the planet would be devastated!"

After a bit of thought, the Gaian leader nodded. "We are best rid of him, then. For now, let us work together."

Thus, as the Brahianites battled the Raiders for their territories, they found themselves under attack from the other side at the same time. To their horror, they discovered that the Gaians had managed to capture and train Mind Worms for use in war. Under this powerful offensive, Brahian Industries didn't stand a chance. It wasn't long before the Raiders had captured the CEO himself, and decided to use him as bait so they could try to capture Mind Worms of their own.

The Brahianites weren't the only faction disrespecting Planet. The Pirates and Spartans had built a lot of factories, dug thermal boreholes in the crust, constructed Condensers to take the water out of the air, and set up Echelon Mirrors to trap solar energy. They needed resources for their armies, and didn't care if they had to rip apart the world to get it.

In hindsight, listening to the environmentalists' warnings would have been a good idea. Captain Ichigo was terrorized by xenofungus growth overrunning her constructions, Mind Worm boils attacking her few land bases, and Isles of the Deep rising from the sea. Soon, Safe Haven was no more, overcome by new and fiercer Mind Worms.

Meanwhile, global warming began causing major floods worldwide. Most of the factions only lost a few bases to the rising seas, but the Spartans, who had shortsightedly built all of their colonies near the coast, were completely washed away.
