The Wind Clan's a fun bunch.

Tae-Jun's so petty, even that soldier knows it.[lol]

Mun-Deok did not sell out. At first. But to keep the clan safe, he has to. Hak once again is awesome. Keeping a level head and being rational is what a general and chief in his situation should be like.

YonaRina's getting back on her feet, slowly but surely.

Episode 4. In which things start turning.

Good guards.

He's sure popular.

She's sure good at complimenting him.

First she tells her she can't do anything, then she tells her to go wash clothes on her own. I mean, that's not very hard, but you still need to know how to do it.

So there are comical villains too.

I find his attack to be suspiciously plot-mandated. How it manifests and their medicine supply feel very artificial for the sake of the plot.

Not much happened, but a few things started to happen. It's kind of a sedate series, but that's not necessarily bad. There doesn't need to be action all the time.

The very last image of the preview shows promise, at least.

Everything changed when the Fire nation tribe attacked...

Actually, I've been getting Tamahome vibes from Hak so I have this bad feeling the Wind tribe will be wiped out

Episode 4 of Son Hak's The Son Hak Variety Hour, starring Hak, in which Hak is awesome. Oh yeah, also, there's also Yona of something or other. But I'm kind of here for Hak.

The Wind Tribe guard duo are hilarious. They should be recurring characters.

The Wind Tribe knows that Hak is awesome. Men want to be him, and women want to bed him. I know how you feel, Wind Tribe villagers.

Hak's brother is so cute. Too bad he'll never be a tenth as awesome as Hak is.

Yona describes Hak as "senseless, rude and... not loveable at all". Silly Yona, Hak being such a delightful twat is the reason he's awesome.

Suddenly, politicks. Bunch of old people sitting around and talking, and Mun-deok is not having any of that shit. Fucks given: 0. Plus, Soo-Won Su Won (man does CR flip flop with the romanization) being grateful of Mun-deok's affection was unexpectedly touching.

Wow, that Wind Tribe woman is kind of a twat to Yona. But don't worry! Hak is here to sav... er... further bully Yona.

Everything changed when the Fire Tribe attac... er... dammed the river. Huh.

Wow Tae-Jun. You know how to hold a grudge. After being rejected, crying in a corner and furiously masturbating would suffice, but you want revenge.

"You know, a court lady should dress a little sexier". Oh, Hak, you. And then he pinches her cheek. That was so unbelievably cute. You know, I now realize that Yona is actually kind of really cute. I guess I was too distracted by Hak.

Suddenly, the Fire Nation wrecks the merchant's shit, which in turn wrecks the Wind Tribe's shit.

So, Hak is willing to sacrifice himself and live as an outlaw to ensure the Tribe's (and Yona's) well being. Wow. Hak somehow managed to be more awesome.

All in all, a pretty swell episode. Sure, it's slow paced but at least stuff happens. Unlike Sora No Method.

Hak check: Still awesome. Now with extra awesomesauce.

I like the pace at which Yona's recovering. She's not over it in a second but she's not sitting around in a daze anymore, either. Also, Hak's younger brother is leagues cuter than any younger brother I've ever met.

I'm wondering how they'll find the time to introduce the yellow dragon (Zeno, I think? He comes in somewhere after chapter 40). I can see them finishing the Jae-Ha arc for a season finale if they hurry, but we haven't even met Yoon yet.

Episode 5:

  • Heang-Dea, the most reliable corpse ever.tongue
  • You can't get rid of Yona that easily, Hak.
  • Archers having the high ground means nothing to Hak. Unless it's a calculated plan. Now inflicted with the Poison status.
  • Why would you think about looking away, Tae-Jun? Look into Yona's eyes, and gaze upon her hair. The resolve contained within is blazing hot!

Episode 5. In which there is resolve.

The non-sick person died. Again.

Someone's fast to catch on to her intentions.

Well, now that he's left, he can sleep again when it's convenient for him. Even if he's only taken about five steps out.

Her will is back. Now she can start growing properly.

Oh, he started monologuing. Time to go birdwatching. I particularly like how she's nodding along with him.

Her gaining weight would be a good thing, since considering her change in lifestyle that would mean more muscle.

Pulling out an arrow like that is far worse than leaving it in.

He knew he would shield her like that, as opposed to just swiping away the arrows like he'd done before?

And the Fire Princess awakens. Well, it would be neat, at any rate.

And so we march into episode 5 of Son Hak Happy Harem Happy Hour. I hear there's some chick in here too. Rita of the Afternoon or something.

Before I add anything else, I must add that Pierrot kinda dropped the ball on the animation on the first half of the episode. You'd think that their sweet, sweet Naruto money would enable them to give this show enough budget for such things, but I guess not.'

The episode opens on Hak vandalizing the hell out of that weapons shop. And it seems he's kind of a twat to the store owner pretty often, it seems. But hey, at least he paid his tab.

In which Tae-Yeon is cute.

[in which nothing of note happens]

Usually, Hak's comment about "paying with your body" would send me on a very bitter rant about how rapetastic shoujo can get. I have no idea why these kind of comments usually piss me off so goddamn much. Maybe is it that, because I was raised by shoujo like Cardcaptor Sakura and Sailor Moon, I developed an idealized version-nay, illusion- of how shoujo is and get bitter and angry every time said illusion is broken? Maybe it's the fact that they expect me to find such comments romantic and that creepy guy is the ideal man for our heroine? Maybe it's a combination of the two? Where am I even going with this self-psychoanalysis? Nevermind.

Oh, right, Hak's "pay with your body" comment. It was a) clearly done in jest and b) it was meant to discourage Yona from following Hak. So, it gets a pass from me. Let's not especulate how it would turn out had Mayu Shinjo handled that scene. Ugh, I just thought about Mayu Shinjo! barfs

"Then I'll snuggle against you". Keep being adorable, Yona.

"I'll play pranks on you.". Oh dear lord, don't tell me Hak is gonna go down the path of many a terrible shoujo love intere- oh wait, nevermind. Just protecting from some incoming soldiers. Actually...

Everything changed when the Fire tribe attacked. Or it would, if Hak weren't so awesome. In fact, even Soo-Wonn acknowledges he's a goddamn pussy in comparison to him.

"Look, Princess. There's nature everywhere." That scene was so goddamn funny.

"You've gained weight, Princess". Oh, Hak, you.

"Don't stand around being impressed!" Well, it's hard to not be impressed by Hak.

NO!!! HAK!!! DON'T KILL HAK NOW, HE'S THE BEST THING IN THIS ANIME!!!

You know, that angsty monologue by Yona after a wounded, slightly less awesome Hak wouldn't be so effective had it not been Chiwa Saito giving such a fine performance.

Holy fucking shit, Yona. That angst overdose must have made you snap. Those fuckin' eyes, man. Does this mean we'll get Badass Yona we saw in that time skip? Does this mean no more Cute Yona? If so, I don't think I'll mind. I like Badass Yona. Even Hak is impressed by Badass Yona.

Hak check: Oh yes.

I wasn't that much into the first half of this episode, but that second half made up for it and beyond. I mean, holy crap, Yona, you know have my respects.

...

So, when does Yona's harem being growing?

I think the most amazing thing was when Hak pulled the usual creepy shoujo thing(even if in context the point is different, even compared to the usual excuses) and Yona was just like "hmm...nope"

And then she was just all like "BESIDES THAT I TOTES WANT YOU SO LETS GET GOING"

The author seems to have wrote it in only to defy it. It also shows how much trust Yona has in Hak, and she even continues to keep her integrity, at the expense of much of the audience getting turned off.

Editor:"What are you doing! Do you even market?"
Author:"Fucks given:0"

Though I imagine if Yona gets close to Soo-won again that might be played straight instead.

I'm not sure what it is about this series that makes it so special to me, but I'm really digging it. The fight scene at the beginning of this episode and Yona being Yona were particularly fantastic.

I think it helps that the story is respecting both sides.

A lot of the humor here doesn't convince me but Yoon's comment actually got me to laugh.

Episode 6

Why are the first two minutes of this episode much more fluidly animated than the rest of the episode? It reminds me of the infamous episode 167 of Naruto: Shippuden, if the animation in that episode wasn't shit. Maybe Studio Pierrot finally figured out how to do fast paced animation without making the characters look like Jell-O Man.

I'm going to praise just about every scene involving Su-On. I think they're trying to set him ujp as a conflicted character, which is nice. Su-On is probably the second best character after Hak, who is awesome. In particular, I hope this series mantains focus on the politics of the world, because I'm going to punch someone if it doesn't happen.

Also, I will take a step forward and say that will Su-On will enjoy that hair in manners others than intended.

Also, we meet haremite #2, Yun (or Yoon; Crunchy keeps switching between romanization systems for no discernible reason). I dig Yun. He had some funny moments in his scarce screentime, which can only be a good thing.

Hak check: He had like five lines in this episode and still managed to be awesome.

In which the harem begins.

I like Yona very much already. She's such a breath of fresh air from most shoujo protagonists out there. Strong, without being unrealistic. She's strong because she picks herself up - in a realistic way - even after such a traumatic situation.

I've known about it since the beginning. But I just refused to believe it.

This episode confirmed something for me.

I just can't hate Tae-Jun. Not especially after seeing him all broken about Yona's "death".

Su-Won's now king. Hak and Yona would've been so happy. If circumstances were different. He better not become a dictator....

That Hak-saving-Yona scenario was funny. Yun's funny.

So, when will Crunchy settle on one romanization per character? I've seen like five ways to transliterate Su-On.

You should probably ask d Roy, with how everybody has Korean names.

Korean romanization looks weird as fuck to me personally(especially those Ks in the place of Gs), so I couldn't help there.

Episode 6. In which there's a thump.

Sure, just stand there and watch while he's attacking your ally with his back turned to you.

I normally object to cutting hair for dramatic purposes, but it works rather well here. Also, that unevenly cut hair works better than what's shown in other pictures.

No Ho Yay there. None at all.

How did he know there was a poison? First clue that he knows more than he should.

I'd have expected them to at least fall in the water. That's marginally softer.

"Nope."
"I feel bad for him."
Yeah, it was a kind of nonchalant response.

Heaven has abandoned him. That's why he's got such a connection to the ground.

I just can't hate Tae-Jun. Not especially after seeing him all broken about Yona's "death".
Gotta agree with that. The story isn't selling him short as a one-note villain.

I figure that if I'm going to watch a series with a bunch of beautiful men in it, I may as well let my inner fujioshi take over and ship every yaoi ship that pleases me.

The whole "shoujo" thing is because 90% of the shoujo I read or watch is yaoi.
