Info in the game reveals that a man donned a suit like one of the Freddy mascots and managed to lead five kids into a room where he murdered them (supposedly by stuffing them into other suits). There's also implications that the mascots are attacking you because they're possessed by those kids.
Also, I'm with you on the "sometimes this thread makes me uneasy" feeling.
This is one of the greatest things I've ever seen.
I know I've seen the unaltered version of that gif before, but I can't remember what it's from.

I should like to see an crossover with Disney, specifically with the Lost Elements of Epic Mickey. Beware those Beetleworx.

I've heard some confusion over the layout of the area, how the map works and such, and it's actually pretty simple, you're just looking at it wrong. That's not to say you're dumb or anything, because so was I for a long time.
The lines in the map are not hallways and the squares that signify cameras are not rooms, the lines are the walls. If you look at it that way it's a lot easier to see that there's just two hallways leading to the security room on either side.
That said, the animatronics have a tendency to teleport or take unusual paths as well, to play with you. Ultimately you don't really have to worry about where they are necessarily as much as whether they're in the hallways close to you or not.
Except Freddy and Foxy of course. Keep an eye on them as much as possible.
