[up]Both do look to be there on the raws. Admittedly, the tarot references aren't new but have never been confirmed by Ishida as being placed there intentionally. However, the "See You Next" is on the raw scans.

The hidden text is a bit hard to see, but it's there. It might be easier to find where people highlight it. As for the 19, you can see it on her right side of the jacket where the hood begins.

[up] So it is there. Cool, hopefully the theories about next month's event will prove true.

I wouldn't even be bothered if Kaneki is really gone and there's a new protagonist. One thing that has always stood out to me is how the story switched points of view, giving us two primary protagonists to follow.

In fact, in reading the series again I am even more convinced that Amon was taken by Aogiri and isn't dead. The fact that Eto knows about his past, as well as his connection/interest in Kaneki and states she finds him interesting even when he falls. Then going to visit him at CCG, and giving him information as well as major hints about bigger things going on. Then Tatara and Noro showing up to confront him when she was off kidnapping her father....

Yeah, pretty sure of what will happen if we get a Part 2.

…Yeah, Kaneki's death might be real, but the final scene- Touka choosing to believe that he's alive so we get a final ray of hope- makes me think he's probably not. And it's not like that aren't ways he could be saved.

It seems people have pointed out another tarot number on the full art of the cover of the newly released Young Jump.

Here's the full art from the official website.

Here's where it's highlighted.

I do see a Grim Reaper though.

[up]Hmmm is that suggesting that the author planned to kill Kaneki or is that just a coincidence? I personally really doubt Kaneki's dead, he got a dangerous centipede to his brain...really doubt that's any better then being stabbed twice there. Touka's and Yomo's wording suggests that if he is still alive but he likely won't be the same person anymore and is lost (although Touka has faith that he will find his way back, totally not more Ship Tease)

What centipede? The centipede Jason implanted already escaped.

[up] I think they just meant we've already seen Kaneki take potentially massive brain injury from that centipede, and come out just fine.

You know, something occurs to me involving The Reveal. They make a big deal over and over again about Kaneki's scent, how so many Ghouls automatically know there's something unusual about him. Hinami in particular knows something is up, but no one seems the wiser about Takatsuki. Is the scent something unique to Kaneki or artificial One-Eyed Ghouls? Or does the Owl have a way to disguise their scent so other Ghouls won't be like "Smells like dinner"?

Other random things I picked up. We see Owl eat, but only something very small and easily swallowed (Mochi, I think) and the other time, they grab what looks like a snack food but play with it instead of actually eating. They do a lot of misdirection while doing it, like asking awkward questions so their companion isn't playing attention.

And another thought: Where does Yomo fit into things, now that we know about the Pierrot? He's old friends with Uta and Itori, and introduced Kaneki to them in the first place.

Just to say a few words without getting spoiled.

Learned about it five days ago. Started two days ago. Real good so far after five episodes. Love Hide.

[up][up] Is it confirmed that Eto really is Takatsuki? We've only had one single shot of Eto's face so far, and it's in such a mess that it's hard to say for sure.

I'm curious too about how much Yomo knows, indeed. In the first place, Uta being involved with Pierrot really comes as a surprise after his speech to Kaneki about the whole "cannot live with you, cannot live without you" thing.

[up]Hide's a pretty interesting fellow indeed.

[up] Yeah, it pretty much is. Otherwise, The Reveal would be meaningless.

[up][up] Definitely good. I hate to be that fan, but I definitely think picking up the manga is worthwhile because the anime is covering basically 79 chapters of material. It chops out an incredible amount of material, that really is worth reading.

In case anyone wasn't aware, Ishida has finally responded on Twitter. Here's a translation of his multi-message response:

"With chapter 143 the title known as Tokyo Ghoul is finished. It's not officially stated in the weekly young jump issue so I'm telling you now. Thanks to the support of people reading the work with joy the work was able to grow big. Thank you very much. And I apologize for suddenly surprising people with this."

"Originally I was planning on explaining the contents this Thursday on the release of the YJ issue but due to the leak of the contents beforehand I was bombarded with questions. Because there were so many questions to answer I did wonder if I should make an announcement (regarding the chapter being the end), but I felt sorry for those who waited to buy the magazine this thursday and for those who already knew the details but were holding off on asking questions till today, so despite it being heart wrenching for myself I held off on saying anything."

"Because of my resolve to not respond, I couldn't respond back to those who became worried about my health. And that may have resulted in compounded worries. And so again I apologize for that."

"Without warning (or an announcement) many found out about the "series end" through the internet or from the contents of the magazine/chapter itself, which is a factor that I myself caused and made people spend an uneasy time until today, I am truly sorry."

"The forward got a little long but that was the main question. Even before this I've had questions about the manga sent to me via twitter, but usually I wish for all the readers to (as much as possible) enjoy the work equally. And so for questions with answers that would be revealed in the future, I'm sorry but I couldn't really answer them directly. (I did though respond to questions that I thought were like, "well I guess it's alright to answer...")"

"As aforementioned, on the basis I wanted everyone to enjoy the story equally and so questions that arose from readers like, "What happened to this character?" or "What does this mean?" could only be answered within the manga. I would be glad if everyone could understand this."

"Because of personal reasons I couldn't talk in detail and I apologize for that. When the time comes and something or another can be announced it'll be through Young Jump or even the official Tokyo Ghoul website. I'm terribly sorry but if you can please wait a little more I would be glad. Sincerely thanks in advance." - Ishida Sui

Apologies for the long words. If the message conveyed properly I would be happy.

[up][up] So I suppose there's something going on behind the scenes. Hopefully, we will eventually get some explanation for the rather sudden ending that left pretty much everything unresolved.

[up][up][up]The sheer non-answer-ness of that is amazing.

@harostar: It could be just to show what Eto looks like and reveal her connection to Yoshimura, though. But I agree that in the short time Takatsuki has appeared, she's done more most-definitely-not-a-ghoul actions than might be expected if it wasn't plot relevant.

I am staring at chapter 143.

I am staring at episode 12.

God damn, what is with this series and endings?!

Episode 12:

  • Kaneki and Hallucination Rize talk about his past.
  • More torture scenes, more hallucination talks.
  • Yamori does the Sadistic Choice with the two allies from last episode, rather than the mother and child. Nico does not appear.
  • Kaneki finally goes over the edge, cue battle with Yamori.
  • Half-Kakuja looked good, the fight looked REALLY good.
  • Ends with Kaneki eating his Kagune, in echo of the end of the first episode.
  • No Yoshimura vs. Doves, Ayato vs. Touka, Uta + Renji + Tsukiyama vs. Noro, Suzuya killing Yamori, revelation of the REAL goal of holding the 11th Ward, no Team Kaneki leaving.

What they had was good, but damn this series really needed twice as many episodes to really do it justice.

[up] Unsure about them needing twice as many episodes to tell the story thus far. I agree that the pacing was bad overall, but that includes stretching things too long as well as rushing stuff that shouldn't be rushed. I think they had enough time to cover Kaneki's arc as it was 'till the end of episode 12 in about that number of episodes, they just didn't handle it optimally. I also though that where they ended it worked, if they really had to end it half way trough. Go out on a high note.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the overall arc of the anime, so yeah, considering on picking up the manga, seeing as it doesn't seem like this'll get a second cour. What's the chapter where it'd be optimal to pick up after having seen the anime? I don't mind retreading the story a bit if there are important bits the anime glossed over (which I think it should have actually done more on some points to better work as a standalone piece. Not that there ever was that great a chance of that happening.)

Sorry if this has been discussed earlier in the thread, but I don't dare to read it due to wealth of spoilers.

[up] Trust me, they really could have used more episodes to really tell the story. They removed massive amounts of material, in some cases just plain leaving out major stuff. And that's honestly why I'd suggest starting from the beginning, if you're going to read the manga. Since they pretty much left out massive amounts of material, there really isn't a good place to pick it up.

The Gourmet Arc runs from Chapter 32 to 46, for example. The finale is pretty much the same as in the anime, but there's a lot lost in the earlier parts.

So I guess if you absolutely want to not start from the beginning, the anime touches on the key points of the previous arcs (the Hinami stuff happens before Tsukiyama shows up, in the manga). The Aogiri Arc is pretty much cut down to the barest elements, so that really cannot be skipped past or the stuff coming afterwards won't make sense.

Saw Episode 12, while they did kind of rush it they still made that torture scene rather brutal. I will admit when I saw the couple I initially thought this wasn't going to be as powerful as the manga version where Yamori killed a mother and child but oh boy was I surprised when they managed to make it as powerful as that (in a brutal sense). Damn, I was really looking forward to fight between Kaneki and Ayato.

Ah well, atleast they gave Kaneki the creepy smile he had at certain points in that fight.

Meh. It was nice to see it animated, but the fight and everything leading up to it was much better handled in the manga.

Welp, I looked it up, and Kaneki's centipede torture became a little less disturbing when I learned the Chinese red-headed centipede is (a) too big to fit far enough in the human ear canal to touch the brain, (b) very rarely aggressive, and (c) possesses only non-fatal venom that can't even kill an adolescent human.

That being said, centipedes crawling in your ear fucks up the skin in the ear canal something good, which should hurt quite a lot (some people have actually gone insane from it). That and when Chinese redheads do bite, it's supposed to hurt like a bitch.

Too bad, so sad Kaneki-kun tongue
