Chapter 168. Fraudrin notices that if all the souls who are attacking him are the people he's killed, Zaratras is conspicuously absent.

Edit: And also the stuff with Gilfrost, but I think it was always more likely he was Zaratras' son anyway. Which is probably who he is.

I honestly hope this isn't Zaratras. If it is then probably nobody's staying dead. Not Mel, not the Weird Fangs; for all we know he'll bring back Zhivago.

His death was the impetus for the entire series. It'd be like reviving Gold Roger.

Eh, I think Roger's death carries more weight in his verse.

And I still don't see the people who have their souls eaten coming back. Even ignoring how that's been made out to be worse than killing the physical body, like Arha pointed out, it's been a over a month, most of those peoples bodies must have died by now.

Arthur and Liz were both cool this week by the way. I for one welcome our new overlo- errm, protagonists.

It looks to me like we're going to be going back and forth between the two of them for awhile. Which is cool, they both need some development, Arthur more than Elizabeth.

For the time being I'm going to assume "Zaratras" is a demon trick of some sort until proven otherwise.

Why would they need to trick anyone? They've already won. There is no truly significant resistance and the only dangerous opponent is only a real threat for a few hours a day.

Well, they are also pricks remember.

Gloxinia had that little speech about what bastards humans are, and seemed to love the idea of making them suffer during the tournament.

I could totally see him doing something like this.

Even if he did, there's no reason for him to use Zaratras specifically. It's not like any Commandment beside Fraudrin have any idea who Zaratras is anyway, or what his significance is.

Gloxinia's hatred for humans is more like Helbram's anyway. He hates humans as a whole, not some few people he met just recently.

They should still need Elizabeth (or rather, her blood) to break the seal and let everyone else out. Or at least, the other higher demons that they can't just summon like the Demon King.

But I don't see why they would need to trick Elizabeth to accomplish that.

Spoilers.

Zaratras got revived by Merascylla's magic, like Elaine. He's holding his grudge against…

not Dreyfus and Hendy but himself for having failed to notice that those two were being controlled by Fraudrin.

He hasn't met with his son Gilthunder and has no idea what face he should show him when they meet.Instead of that, he goes to see Meliodas still lying in bed.

"…how long are you going to stay asleep? Didn't you yourself say that you couldn't die just from your hearts stopping to beat?"

Zaratras expects that Elizabeth wouldn't be able to see Meliodas at the capital of the dead, and, after suggesting to ask him directly, applies a "charm" on Meliodas' corpse.

That done, Zaratras and Elizabeth are transported into Meliodas' memories world. The younger Zaratras and king Baltra can be seen. There, Meliodas shows up with the still baby Elizabeth in his arms.

End texts: "With a sin on his shoulders, the hero has found someone to protect. The past of the "anger" has been revived.""The key to Meliodas' come-back lies in the past! The trip through his hidden memories announces the beginning!!"

To be continued in chapter 182 / A definite warmth.

Grudge against yourself? Well, that's unexpected.

Wait? If he's still alive due to Mercyllya(sp) does that mean Ban really was one heart short?

So either Merascylla's magic can't be stopped or she is STILL alive?

I was hoping goddesses. But anyway, I don't see Merascylla still being alive, but after that send off i can't image that Elaine is still alive either, so maybe the grudge really is the most important part. They can be sustained just by that even if Merascylla is dead but if the grudge goes away they can only stay around for as long as Merascylla is alive or something.

Anyway, more backstory is cool. I kind of wanted Meliodas to be gone for longer, him coming back just a few chapters later sort of weakens the impact of things.

It occurs to me that after Meliodas comes back there may very well be another "gathering the Sins" arc. Obviously not taking as long as the first time but I could see it happening. And that's...

Nostalgia man. Everyone remembers the great knight Zaratras. Not the goofball underneath the armor.

Twenty bucks says Hendrickson and Dreyfus were the only ones who knew what he was really like.

Which, sadly enough, is why they were able to kill him off like that.

It was probably common knowledge among the knights.

Wait, doll Gowther is 2324 cm? That doesn't sound right. Maybe it's supposed to be 23-24?

Is there a trope for character like this? Thought to be a badass, but actually a weirdo when you know him.

Closest I can think is the inverse of Crouching Moron, Hidden Badass.

So, do you think Elaine is still around and if so, do you want her to actually stay around?

And also, what do you think the larger point of Meliodas "dying" is? Because this chapter seems to be implying he's not even really dead and something like this has actually happened to him before.
