So what exactly is the difference between these two tropes? Both of them seem to be "purely decorative eyewear".

The difference I'm seeing:

  • Purely Aesthetic Glasses: A character wear fake glasses for in-universe reasons like looking smart, sophisticated, scary, and/or cute et.c. At some point in the story it's revealed that the glasses are fake (have regular "window glass" in them), the character doesn't need corrective lenses and is wearing them just for show.
  • Goggles Do Nothing: This is more of a character design trope. The character wear goggles, glasses, shades, etc on their forehead/hat around their neck or some other place for no reason but to possibly make the character look cool or whatever. These eyewears never get used in any useful way. In most cases they are never worn as intended (in front of the eyes), in others they are worn over the eyes but under circumstances where they have no effect and are meaningless.
