Comically serious is okay, what do you have in mind?

Finnish sniper who received a vision and blessings from Vainamoinen, a Finnish wizard/demi-god.

I wouldn't mind seeing how that'd work out, go for it.

Okay, might not get around to posting until week's end though. RL is going to be busy.

ETA any suggestions as to what kind of hunting/sniper rifle a Finn might be using at that time? The only one I was able to track down was one of Russian design, although I suppose he could have "liberated" one.

Russian Mosin-Nagants were the perennial favorites, not to mention ubiquitous; if he'd gotten exceptionally lucky he might have gotten his hands on an SVT.

Don't worry too much about historical accuracy (though I don't mind it). You're going to be facing off against Nazi super science and stuff like that.

Okay, besides it's a magical rifle that can turn into a magical bow so yeah, historical accuracy notsomuch. But some folk around here are authenticity fascists so I thought I'd check.

I kind of want to make a Ninties Anti Hero that no one takes seriously.

Hell, somebody should make a classical mahou shoujo. Except a second-generation Japanese-American so burningly red-white-and-blue patriotic that nobody's quite sure what to do with her, and there are mutterings about how sending her and her family to Manzanar camp was a mistake.

That wouldn't really work since this is vaguely based off of WWII era comic books, it is an interesting concept though.

That's an idea worth considering. If I knew what a "mahou shoujo" was I'd consider it for an NPC

Overly Patriotic Man? A Superpowered Mountie? The possibilities are endless, I can understand why you're having difficulty coming up with something. If you want to run some ideas past me, go for it.

Lasing target. You know the type: cute little animal sidekick, overly flashy transformation sequences, pink skirts and frills, going into battle declaring the power of love, incinerating targets with kiloton-yield Friendship Beams, getting decapitated and then horrifically murdered by the Hungry Hungry Caterpillar...

Yes, it's a stereotypically Japanese media phenomenon, meaning that the meguca US 442nd Infantry Regiment practically has to happen now.

• Name: Evald Nikkinen
• Alter Ego: Marksman
• Age: 23
• Nationality: Finnish
• Appearance: Just under 6', slender build, high cheek bones, dark hair, grey eyes, normally dresses in military fatigues, more about which below
• Powers: Sight, hearing and reflexes all slightly above human maximum.
• Abilities: Expert marksman with either bow or rifle, very skilled gunsmith, expert hunter/tracker.
• Equipment: Typical gear for living off the land.
  • Swiftstrike, a hunting rifle. Comes with inexhaustible supply of ammo which are both armor piercing and explosive
  • Evald's fatigues can, at his wish, blend in with whatever the background is at the time making him functionally invisible at a distance and difficult to see even close up. Comes with detachable hood.
  • Skis that move with complete silence and over any relatively smooth terrain, including water.
• History: Evald in many ways is typical of his people. He was a farmer who supplemented his income with hunting when the Winter War occurred. Like his country he fought well but lost to the vastly superior numbers of the Soviets. Like his nation he allied with Germany not out of likeing for the Nazis but hatred of the Russians. Because his land was in Karelia, the section of Finland given to the Societs at the end of the Winter War he has a particularly strong dislike for them.

Then, during the Siege of Leningrad (which the Finns took part in but neither attacked, nor allowed the Germans to use their territory to attack from) he had a dream of an tall, old man with a long white beard, clad in a white robe and carrying a small harp. The man was Vainamoinen, legendary wizard. he led him out of the camp and told him of horrors the Finns allies were committing and worse ones that they would commit. Vainamoinen asked if he would fight, not just for his country but for justice and honor. Evald said yes. Then the ancient gave him gifts and cast his blessings on him giving him sight, hearing andreflexes beyond thos of other men and told him of allies that he would find. When Evald aoke, he was out of the camp and fully clothed with a rifle he had never seen before.

Sounds cool, accepted.

I'll try to throw together a starting post once we've got one or two more players.

Am interested in apping maybe a Polish or Dutch character, a little stumped on what powers to use per se. Though I like the idea of maybe something inspired by Doctor Strange if that's allowed.

Wizardry's fine by me, just keep it on the middle area of the power spectrum.

Dutch Resistance has potential, but Poland. Jan Sobieski's winged hussars; Kosciusko's scythemen; the Napoleonic lancers, proclaimed by l'Empreur himself to be the finest cavalry in his army; and in WWII itself, the famed 303 Squadron fighting for the Royal Air Force...the possibilities are endless. (Yes, it's something of a running joke with my friends that I'm a wee bit obsessed with Polish history.)

So.. what do you think about somehow combining maho shoujo with Polish Winged Hussar? Doable?

I know that it is doable but that's a central character in my current writing project so I'm feeling somewhat ambivalent about watvhing others using the idea.

Ah, well. It's not like I can claim copyright or anything, you did come up with the idea independently, and I'd have to be a real dick to claim otherwise. Might as well see what someone else's take on it is going to be, since Jadwiga's from a 'verse of rather unusual magical girls.

That sounds pretty cool to be honest.

While the magical girl ideas are amusing, I don't feel like it'd work terribly well with the setting. We're aiming for over the top pseudo-parodies 40s era comics here.
