[up] At least Russia are only focused on bullying their European neighbors and causing internal trouble in their North American one for now. Once they start being more active towards their Asian neighbors (Especially the Central Asian countries to take their resources before China can and Japan with the Kuril Islands dispute), however, things will probably get even more ugly.

Regarding Mongolia, I've always wondered if they get on because they are stuck between two superpowers (China and Russia) that can't agree on how to use it.

No one sane want to become the neighbor of a paranoid man who seems to genuinely want to become the best James Bond movie villain ever and also just happen to own nuclear weapons.

I suggest you go to the Russia thread and have a chat with some Russian tropers (who are neither heavily pro nor anti-Putin). Such comparisons are silly and do not take into account the complex politics within Putin's visions (even if his way of going about it strikes a weird contrast between pointless cheating and ruthless pragmatism).

Mongolia is kept safe by its strategic ambiguity. They have cooperated with NATO peacekeeping operations and China didn't really say anything about the visit of Dalai Lama to find the reincarnation of the next Mongolian head lama.

[up] There's also the fact that the Mongols lean slightly closer towards Russia than China due to being part of the Soviet Union in the past. Any Chinese effort to bring Mongolia into its orbit will encounter staunch resistance from the Russians, who import a lot of natural gas from Mongolia.

Japan Maritime Self Defense Force to Send Largest Carrier to the South China Sea

The Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) will dispatch its largest warship, the helicopter carrier JS Izumo, on a three-month deployment to the South China Sea beginning in May, according to media reports.

While deployed, the 27,000-ton warship will make port calls in Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka and is also slated to participate in this year’s trilateral India-U.S.-Japan Malabar naval exercise taking place in the Indian Ocean in July.

According to Japanese defense sources interviewed by Reuters, “the aim is to test the capability of the Izumo by sending it out on an extended mission.” Furthermore, the helicopter carrier “will train with the U.S. Navy in the South China Sea.”

No further details were provided by the Japanese Ministry of Defense.

During last year’s iteration of the Malabar naval drill, which took place in the Philippine Sea in June, the JMSDF sent the Izumo’s predecessor, the 19,000-ton JS Hyuga — the lead ship of the Hyuga-class of helicopter carriers — to participate in the exercise.

The Izumo-class helicopter carrier, officially referred to as a helicopter destroyer in order to downplay the ship’s offensive capabilities, is the largest surface combatant currently in service with the JMSDF. And while the Izumo’s primary role is surveillance and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions, the ship can serve as an effective anti-submarine warfare platform.

“The ship is designed to accommodate up to 14 helicopters (seven Mitsubishi-built SH-60k ASW helicopters and seven Agusta Westland MCM-101 mine countermeasure helicopters), five of which can simultaneously take off and land, given the Izumo’s large flight deck and five landing spots,” I explained elsewhere.

While repeatedly denied by Japanese officials and with no official plans to acquire the aircraft in the future, the JMSDF could launch the F-35B is the U.S. Marine Corps variant of the supersonic fifth-generation F-35B Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter, capable of vertical or short takeoffs and vertical landings without requiring a catapult launcher, from the Izumo.

The Japan Air Self Defense Force will procure up to 100 additional new fifth-generation air superiority fighter aircraft by the 2030s and will receive 42 F-35As (the conventional take off and landing variant) over the coming years. However, the Izumo lacks a catapult system necessary to launch conventional fighter jets.

The JMSDF will more likely deploy a number of V-22 tilt-rotor aircraft — a hybrid between a conventional helicopter and turboprop plane with both vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) and short takeoff and landing (STOL) capability — from the carrier. Japan has placed an order with the United States for a total of 17 V-22s and is expected to receive the first batch of aircraft in 2017.

Next to a OQQ-22 bow-mounted sonar to track enemy submarines, the carrier boasts two Raytheon RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missile Sea RAM launchers and two Phalanx close-in weapon systems to defend against aerial threats.

The JS Izumo is expected to return to Japan in August. Her sister ship, the Kaga, is scheduled to be commissioned this month.

'Ere we go. "Helicopter destroyer" is still an example of god-tier loophole abuse.

[up][up] Mongolia was a Soviet satellite state, it was never actually part of the Soviet Union, but yeah it's had close ties to Russia since independence from China, in part due to Russia helping with said independence.

[up][up][up] Actually Mongolian has its own script. While Cyrillic has supplanted it in Mongolia, in Inner Mongolia its still used by speakers of Mongolian (and some other related languages).

It looks like within the next day the South Korean Prosecution Service is going to summon the former president Park for investigations.

A question I have about impeachment processes. If a parliamentary body or a court involved in impeachment formally pronounces a person not guilty on some charges, is the removed official still liable for those charges in a regular court? Or would that be double jeopardy?

In South Korea's case, the previous president to be impeached by the National Assembly was Roh Moo-hyun, and the impeachment was overturned by the court, but he was still summoned for investigations after he left office, although I don't know if that was for the same reasons as the impeachment charges.

In the case of Park Geun-hye, the court unanimously affirmed the impeachment (8-0), but dismissed some charges like the Sewol-related charge.

Generally, if the court dismisses a charge the same one can't be brought up again, unless it's taken to an even higher court. If the highest court in the land dismisses the charge, then that's that. Of course, if future evidence indicates otherwise then the case can be re-opened (unless the statute of limitations has run out).

Assistance in investigations is something everyone is required to do when called upon by the proper authorities.

These are generalisations though and specifics of the court procedure differs quite a bit from country to country.

I wouldn't say it's fair play. The people they'd be inflicting this on didn't do this to them.

Even if this was inflicted against England, I very much don't believe in The Sins Of The Father or Revenge by Proxy. Not when the punishment is capital or corporal.

My mother though. She's a bit of a nationalist in the cultural sense.

If it's deliberate. It's entirely possible it's just gross negligence, isn't it?

Possibly, gods know that China's infamous for it. However, this is a well-known phenomenon and it keeps on happening, so I suspect they merely noticed that it works for them and don't bother doing anything about it.

It's also very difficult to take anything they say seriously, especially when you look at things such as Unrestricted Warfare.

The now-former president Park Geun-hye of South Korea has been formally placed under custody.

Summary of her situation: after leaving the Blue House she only spent only about a week in her private home before she was called in to be investigated, but now she's officially placed under arrest.
