Both things aren't mutually contradicting. Popularity is the very same thing that put them in both the animation and the games, and the very same one that makes them star here over other characters who could have maintained the suspense of not knowing if they could die or not.
Okay, just as long as we're clear on this being an Interquel.

Once again, I want to point out that Captain Boomerang is never shown to die (and not even in an ambiguous way like Killer Frost), so we could see him again in Arkham Knight.
One Strip! One Strip!Wow.
If I hadn't read this thread, I wouldn't have known that wasn't Mark Hamill voicing the Joker. Troy Baker's voice has gotten a lot closer to Hamill since Origins. I like it.
And it sounds like Conroy is Batman again.
When I first saw the title, the kneejerk reaction was, "Oh joy, another rehash of a popular game's plot". But putting in the Suicide Squad? With Harley Quinn? I love it.
I wish this movie didn't involve Batman at all - maybe in a tertiary role, you know, a reference or a little scene with a crook shouting, "Its DAH FRIGGIN BAT!" or something. A movie purely about The Suicide Squad versus an Ax-Crazy Joker?
That would be pure, nerdy bliss.
Akira Toriyama (April 5 1955 - March 1, 2024).By now, Joker is a big enough name that a movie about him, with his name on the cover but NOT featuring Batman could still sell well regardless.
Hell, I'd bet Joker's name on a DVD would have better selling push than Wonder Woman's, which I admit is all kinds of sad.
Honestly, I didn't mind Batman's presence, as he has a rather minor role and is played more as a background character and a force the "heroes" have to deal with during their travel to Arkham. So yeah, I can live with that, because at least he didn't steal the spotlight.
Overall, it was a really nice animated movie in my opinion. Until now, I only knew the Suicide Squad from reputation, but this made me want to check their comics.
Start with the classic John Ostrander run, please.
Why? Did it get bad after it?
I will try find them first.^^
I've always found the Suicide Squad to be a particularly fascinating group of villains. They're not put together because of familial ties or because they all want money, they're not brought together by some mad genius with a grudge against the hero. They're legally sanctioned, death row inmates being given the opportunity to fight for their lives against other, death row potentials. The comic book world has no end of criminally insane, superpowered freaks that Cadmus could lock up and put shock collars on.
At least, following their mini-arc during Justice League Unlimited really got me hooked on the idea of a supervillain team forced to work together even temporarily.
The name itself is just sinister. Plus I've always liked Evil Versus Evil and comic book adaptions just don't have enough of those. Sure, you get the "morally gray Superman/Batman/Wonder Woman" scenario from time to time, but you rarely get to see The Joker just bomb a Lex Corp building, or see Ares interfere with Gorilla Grodd or Darkseid. The fun thing about villain-centric stories is that they don't hold back during their fights.
Of course though, without a little restraint, you get series like Bomb Queen that have an utterly irredeemable protagonist that you want to see stomped into the ground.

Akira Toriyama (April 5 1955 - March 1, 2024).Well, watching it now.
Barely 1/4th through the whole thing and I love it. Batman doesn't seem to be hogging the spotlight. Harley Quinn, Deadshot, and Killer Frost get to be villains.
And f'ck do I love uncensored villains.

Akira Toriyama (April 5 1955 - March 1, 2024).This was a really good movie. The only thing was that I thought Deadshot and Harley were the only ones that really got any extended character development. KG Beast was barely there. And I actually kinda liked Black Spider. I thought he was the baddest MF there after it implied he kicked Batman's ass but then it was ruined.

Stand Fast, Stand Strong, Stand TogetherSaw that "twist" from a mile away. I can't help but feel like there was a little too much "Deadshot iz cool see?" going on though.
Also Joker highjacking every other movie that involves Batman is getting a bit stale.
Yeah Black Spider was really underserved. I think it would have been much better if it had turned out what I initially thought it to be.
I think it would have been cool if the Squad fought the inmates and actually ended up saving the day because they had to.
Stand Fast, Stand Strong, Stand Together
I'd have liked it more if it was purely him versus them. The hijacking is getting a little old, they might as well have made it purely Evil Versus Evil. But I liked it for what it was.
I'm still not sure what to make of Harley turning on the team. At first I thought she was just doing it to save the others but.... no. Injustice Gods Among Us did the same thing.
Akira Toriyama (April 5 1955 - March 1, 2024).Exactly just have Batman show up to clean up the mess and put a wrench in it now and again. Have them fight off Joker and eventually Two-Face, Ivy, Bane, and the rest.
That's what I thought too perhaps it was a secondary reason. I think she seemed somewhat concerned for them still. The team definitely should have stayed longer together, other than it being the Deadshot movie.
Stand Fast, Stand Strong, Stand Together
This one, however, is in continuity with the Batman: Arkham Series. It doesn't make any sense to say that those characters have Popularity Power to keep them from dying. Not liking that is fine but saying this movie isn't in continuity with the games is incorrect.
