More Tensai + ruins = significant improvement over the rest of this arc

Still has the problem of playing up Ikusaba as some kind of horrible monster when he's really just kind of a jerk

I don't mind the Ikusaba thing so much since I'm still expecting some sort of episode 4-esque confrontation where the climax says more about Juugo than him. Also they basically admitted that "I don't care about all that, I just don't like you" was the main motivation.

Well animated punches, though I would expect experienced fighters to try to pin down rather than just beat up an opponent. Also a plot point that comes out of nowhere.

But a good demonstration of them working as a team.

Punching and kicking have always been overvalued in fiction over holds. It's just more visually interesting.

Which plot point came out of nowhere?

Episode 10. In which Tensai gets a hole in her head wear.

I kinda wonder if he'll be forced to use the treasure to save someone, or otherwise convinced to use it. Wouldn't be a point about the promise otherwise.

The slower someone does something, the more likely it is that they're going to be interrupted.

So, does the path go straight forward from a door into the pillar in the middle of the square?

So, the 13 constellations of the zodiac. Not often you see the 13th one.

"Who're you're calling reckless?" asks the guy hanging under an I-beam.

If you wear a skirt to a place like that, and place yourself in such a position, you've got yourself to blame.

If someone picks you up, while standing on a precarious place, struggling is not the self-preserving way to respond.

Their cooperation is so lovely to behold. One of the best parts of the episode.

I like how Tensai completely ignores the incoming idiot and focuses on the puzzle.

Gonna have to agree with the idiot. Or at least if what he says is true. Some things you accept on your own, even if others want to protect you. Age is maybe a slightly different matter.

So that's how he moves quickly.

That restraining treasure would've been pretty good by now.

Tensai's either brave or stupid for mocking people who're somewhat above her in physical ability. Well, in her case, outright clever, as usual.

For someone who claims to be so focused on his task, he's certainly easy to rile up.

Pawnch. Es.

Let's have a cliffhanger for the sake of having a cliffhanger.

Yeah, more Tensai = good.

Juugo channeled his inner Kamijou Touma, I see. More to the point, like the fight with the Club President, it really reminded me of the fights in A Certain Magical Index, with the antagonist power user having the advantage until his power is explained, then the allies using this knowledge to counterattack before a final punch is landed. Props especially to the Prez (I was almost wondering why he was staying in the shadows).

The finding of the (bloody) schoolbag was expected, it was obvious something happened to Yun!Saki in the ruins. Since she couldn't recognize Ikusaba, I was leaning for amnesia caused by either brain damage or trauma, but this episode seems to imply that she may have died. And presumably the treasure brought her back to life. Then the treasure might be able to save Juugo, but he can't use it as he promised to Nanana.

[up] That's actually pretty common in any series where you have to explain powers. (I reference another one later). I wonder if there is a trope for that.

I really like the dynamic Tensai and Juugo have. It's great. They make a good team.

Considering what we know about Yun it looks like she died, but doesn't remember anything. I wonder if she's a vampire now, considering the Head Wings. I would totally laugh if the treasure turned out to be a Stone Mask

Treasure 10:

  • This time, the ruins incorporate the zodiac. All thirteen of them. Quite the crafty challenge.
  • What? Tensai didn't say you were an idiot, Juugo. You must be hearing things.tongue
  • Tensai, no! Phew, her cap took the needle. Brave head wear.tongue
  • That bag... I guess Yun must've carried a treasure that acted like a reset button, got skewered, and upon getting skewered, it activated, returning her to sometime before she attempted the challenge. Any memory of the ruins erased.
  • So Ikusaba was swimming in the shadows.
  • At the end of the day, Ikusaba's guts are to be hated. The expected motivation for kicking his butt.
  • Tensai doesn't pick fights she can't win.cool
  • See that, Ikusaba? They are Shadowfins. And the 'crappy treasures' have hidden potential. Nanana's not one to divulge all of the treasure's secrets, after all. It wouldn't be fun otherwise. Now then, enjoy chowing down on some Knuckle Sandwiches. I hear that they are very delicious.
  • Oh, right. He had that treasure with him. Sore Loser.

I think we're forgetting who Yuu-chan's anego is...

In any case, I figure that the reason why Nanana's forbidding Juugo from ever using the treasure in that specific maze is that it's got something to do with bringing back the dead to life. Which in a sense isn't what Juugo needs to find Nanana's killer too.

That said, while Juugo made that promise, who's to say that said promise binds anyone else, like, oh, say Tensai.

Eh, the implication is that she would have been willing to let him use it if she hadn't given him any hints. It's more of a "fair play" thing on her part than actively wanting him to not use the particular item. He shouldn't have his successes handed to him so he needs a handicap to compensate. So basically the same reason she helps Ikusaba despite hating him; she hinders Juugo despite rooting for him. Also I very much doubt that it has anything to do with Nanana's death or state of death. That whole meta-mystery just seems beyond the scope of a single cour.

That said, I'm sure the "someone else uses it" workaround will come up, as well as the mystery of Yun's missing memories and injuries. Maybe a timewarp thing?

Episode 11: Apparently mysteries are unanswered. Well, whatever.

As expected, Ikusaba gets his "not a completely terrible person" moment while still serving as a foil for Juugo (there's a little bit about treating people as a means or an ends). Victory is attributable to Tensai and she wins the season.

I haven't heard anything about this being particularly popular, so I wouldn't expect a second season. A bit sad but whatever. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised in the future.

Episode 11. In which Tensai never loses.

Him barely being able to speak kind of doesn't matter concerning his trustworthiness. And I think she knows it rather well.

"And your real name?" Still in the habit of doubting people's introductions.

And then he just walked away. Kinda strange. Kind of not final-episode-ish.

Love her smile when she's sitting over him. Yeah, she was bluffing.

Please don't tease the pervert. Actually, do, it's pretty funny.

Fake lock. Which explains why she didn't say anything about it before.

Can only trust Tensai as far as you can throw her. But to be fair, she's pretty light.

A Master Detective never loses. Except against a drinking straw.

Random-fanservice girl.

And Nana is in no hurry to go anywhere. Well, not that she can.

Tensai's definitely the highlight of the anime.

[up][up]

Also Noitamina series getting sequels are fairly rare, unless a split cour was planned to begin with.

[up]

Holy heck, the problem here is, as usual, it's not translated, and what's worse, those who apparently DID read the series keeping their mouths shut even after this episode.

...Nope, still don't think Ikusaba was handled well

And we get a WTF ending that seems to suggest a second season, but who knows if that'll happen

Overall: Very pretty and Tensai is a lot of fun, but she's only around about half the time. The story hints at some interesting stuff but never really delivers. We do get a decent look at Yama Juugo, but he's honestly not all that interesting. So, fairly decent, but I'm not sure I'd want to watch a second season

Final Treasure:

  • Tensai made a hard bargain. And was quite no-nonsense about it, too. Ikusaba had to accept.cool
  • Tensai truly values introductions. Doubly so.tongue
  • Looks like Ikusaba gained some respect for Yuiga.
  • Tensai's good at bluffing. And teasing Juugo to pieces.tongue
  • Looks like Tensai has met her match. Darn drinking straw. Oh, and Juugo's resolve. Totally lost this time A minor setback!
  • Passing on ain't so simple. But that's alright.
  • Radiant smile.
  • There's one thing a master detective always keeps. And that's...her priiiiiide!note
  • Well, a certain duo bagged themselves a certain guy who was a threat earlier.tongue
  • Treasure Nanana. Definitely an important treasure that may or may not be the time treasure. Sudden Saki in Trance Mode! That scared me a little.

Yeah, this was a good run. Nanana and Tensai are my faves.

I think it was pretty fun in that I actually liked pretty much all the characters.
