So go threaten them anyway. If they're anywhere near as professional as you say they'll back down.

Ours did when we sent the 101st Airborne.

[up] Russia did exactly that in 1994. It didn't end too well for them.

And it's been 20 years and they've learned a lot of lessons from Ukraine, Georgia, and Syria and developed a lot of new technology.

According to you this persecution will never stop so clearly that means war is the only acceptable solution. Better do it now than later.

Maybe the Chechens have learned as well. In that case the balance of power would not have shifted.

I doubt that. I also doubt they've made up for 20 years of modernization and R&D either.

[up] Those lessons were learned by the Chechens as well (not least because they were deployed frequently in all of those places).

Why do you think Putyin needs Kadyrov in Chechnya so much? And why does he buy Kadyrov's loyality with money and power in the region?

Because he knows that military intervention equals to clustefunk there.

Then kill and replace him. Get one of his Kadyrov's underlings to do it. These concentration camps are unacceptable.

[up][up]No, Putin just wants to outsource the security in Chechnya to a local warlord because it's less of a headache than keeping the things there not drowning in jihadis himself. And fuck collateral damage, they are all kebab there anyway.

Though with all the going past every single line there is that Ramzan seems to be doing nowadays, Putin might full well decide that having Kadyrov killed and replaced is less trouble than dealing with his bullshit.

[up][up] That would likely result in internal (and likely armed) conflicts between the potential candidates.

The best solution would be to somehow provide an escape route for the concerned people without Kadyrov noticing, but that is also hard to implement, and yeah, the government definitely doesn't care that much about the victims to do it. sad

[up] And do you think he would need Kadyrov for that if he could handle the situation with military means?

Just what is the relation between Kadyrov's goons and the Russian military? The Ukraine thread and some discussions about the Ossetian conflict suggested that they overlap substantially.

[up][up]Not really. Kadyrov has a bunch of pet commandos and some security personnel, but overall the Russian army is outside his sphere of influence. The Kadyrovtsy are just a very nice deniable asset due to their de-facto allegiance, hence their prominence in recent conflicts.

Well, the reason I was wondering is to know what kind of toys the Kadyrov goons could use.

In summary, the Russian military can and should impose upon the Chechnya to stop killing the gays, but can't be arsed to bother even bluffing in their defense, let alone actually going to war for their pervert degenerate decadent asses.

Like a policeman knowing they're lynching a nonce and not bothering to face the mob for the disgusting person.

[up]Not really, no. Yugoslavia isn't really a thing in our popular political history.

[up][up]It's a bit like the USA and the Saudis, to be honest, in terms of how much murder of brown people by their pet fundie warlords a government is willing to tolerate in exchange for a geopolitical alliance. Besides, this is Russia, the thought that a government is a fundamentally evil and abusive institution that randomly murders whomever it doesn't like is so deeply ingrained into the Russian psyche that no state-level abuse short of another Holocaust is going to make us want to take action. Because we simply fail to find it outrageous. Because that's just how things are in this world, amirite?

Saudi Arabia isn't part of the American sovereign state. The situation is closer to Texas decided to wipe out LGBT people and America doing nothing about it.

[up]I would say that the situation with Chechnya is still closer to the Saudi-US relationship because Chechnya is only nominally a part of Russia. It's an ethnically, culturally, politically and religiously different self-governing republic where Islamic fundamentalism has been rife ever since the Saudis exported it there in the 90s and where Russia has no soft power whatsoever. If Chechnya were Texas, then Texas would've been inhabited mostly by fiercely religious and nationalistic Native Americans who don't identify as USA citizens anywhere except in front of cameras and whom the White House explicitly doesn't care about as long as there's no uprising.

Looks like Saudi Arabia is the Mordor of this planet. They're a net exporter of shit across the globe.

Why are they such assholes? And why aren't they content to be assholes to each other at home, instead of sharing?

[up]Because Churchill, Stalin and Roosevelt started dividing up the globe when they realized the whole 'one world' thing wasn't gonna fly, they more or less pulled names out of a hat-the US got Ibn Saud, who in turn was ripshit about Israel getting put where it was-Saud wanted Germany to cough up the land. So we got in bed with him, watched him and several other WW 2 warlords start tearing into each other, and wound up with a Sunk Cost Fallacy-they mostly did what we asked, and by the time we realized how bad things were we were already tainted by association and no one else in the region wanted to work with us. So here we are, another flavor of Saddam and Osama that have not quite come home to roost, but it is definitely on the horizon.

I'd say Chechnya's connection to Russia is a bit more like the US territories' connection to the USA. Places like Puerto Rico, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa. Not official states but still part of our country. The remnants of colonialism.

What it is with the obsession of certain countries to fake-attacking other countries?
