Why not start from the very Begining? Everyone pretty much agrees in the Music World that the first Stoner Rock band was Sir Lord Baltimore. I recommend looking them up (They only have 3 Albums). My favorite Song of theirs is "Lake Isle of Innersfree".
Qotsa is one of my favorite bands, and I have recently gotten into Kyuss, but I don't really know anything else. Tips for newbies?
Sing the song of sixpence that goes burn the witch, we know where you liveMonster Magnet are awesome. Haven't heard the new album but I think it's a step back toward their stoner-y roots rather than another huge rock album with planet-sized choruses.
Oh awesome, the OP likes 60 watt Shaman? I have seed of decades might have to give it a blast tonight.
@ Rvdz: Monster Magnet. Fu Manchu. Orange Goblin and Nebula. They're all pretty accessibl by Stoner standards. Cathedral, Sleep, Spirit Caravan for the slightly more Doom-tolerant listener. And Electric Wizard for the individual who likes their Stoner INTENSE. QOTSA and Kyuss are both excellent bands though, good introduction to the genre for sure...
@ Dingo Walley: I actually have the Sir Lord Baltimore albums on my computer, albeit classified as 70s Heavy Metal/Proto-Metal rather than Stoner Metal/Rock. I can hear the connection though... And that is one of their best songs, though I'm partial to Woman Tamer myself. The title is part of the reason...
@ Jonny 0110: The Magnet are amazing. I defy anyone to say otherwise. I love every record they've done, but Dopes To Infinity and Powertrip are my faves by a slim margin. Also, play Seed of Decades! Great record! Play it loud!
If at first ya don't succeed, try a bit more, then give up or cheat... ;) -Myself Nothing can stop me now! -Piggy by Nine Inch NailsThere were quite a few bands in the 70s that were big influences/precursors to the Stoner Metal genre. There was the obvious Black Sabbath influence, of course (Vol 4 was especially influential). There were also popular 70s Metal/Proto-Metal bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Budgie, who all made forays into trippier territory. And of course, there were more underground bands like the aforementioned Sir Lord Baltimore, Dust, Captain Beyond and Leafhound.

If at first ya don't succeed, try a bit more, then give up or cheat... ;) -Myself Nothing can stop me now! -Piggy by Nine Inch NailsDude, yeah. The Magnet rock. I love Mastermind it was such a return to form after 4-way Kebablo. Monolithic has a special place in my heart as it was the first one I bought and has Supercruel on it... but I would have to agree on Powertrip by a slim margin. Bummer's lyrics about needing a fistful of medication just to keep it in his pants offended my Smiths-loving housemate so much he had to leave the room! My dad and I always get them on when we're driving together and between us two and Dave Wyndorf the "Uh-huh-huhs" and "WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Hs" fly thick and fast!
Indeed they do. Weirdly enough, I happen to like The Smiths as well. But I can see why some of the more... "sensitive" of that band's fans would be offended by the Magnet's lyrics. And Bummer is a fave of mine as well. Great song, with awesome, hilarious and badass lyrics. Actually, those three things pretty much define the Magnet on the whole.
Also, how could I mention 70s influences on Stoner and miss Hawkwind and the Pink Fairies?!
If at first ya don't succeed, try a bit more, then give up or cheat... ;) -Myself Nothing can stop me now! -Piggy by Nine Inch NailsOh yeah don't get me wrong, I like the Smiths too. Me and my housemate listen to other music together like them, Violent Femmes, Morphine, Nick Cave and stuff like that. Magnet definitely isn't his sort of thing! I love Bummer and Temple of Your Dreams and of course Crop Circle.
I dislike this style personally, although Blood Farmers, a doom band I love, is sometimes classified as it. You might like'em.

Only Death Is RealGroovy! Love it. Kinda brings to mind mid-period Cathedral, or maybe Sleep. And of course the obvious Doom Metal influences. It's a perfect hybrid of Doom and Stoner, IMHO. Need to check this band out.
Oddly enough, all those are good bands. I'm guessing your roommate is an Alternative/Indie fan? "Temple of Your Dreams" is a good one as well. Interesting drone riffs alternated with the expected crushingly heavy chorus. Can't go wrong there. And "Crop Circle" just has a great riff. And some great "Yeahs!" too.
If at first ya don't succeed, try a bit more, then give up or cheat... ;) -Myself Nothing can stop me now! -Piggy by Nine Inch NailsYeah, I love alt/indie as well too... I'm super excited about the new Afghan Whigs record as they are my favourite band... I also love a bit of Fu Manchu, returning to the Stoner Rock. The King of The Road says you're moving too slow!
Blood Farmers have more or less completed their new album. There's a song off of it here.
It is now mandatory that I check these guys out more. Looking 'em up on wikipedia right now... :P Then maybe discogs...
Good genre(s). The Whigs were (and are again, evidently) a great band. Very unique sound. Fu Manchu are a good, fun Stoner band with some great riffs/grooves and amusing lyrics. And the King of the Road does indeed say that...
If at first ya don't succeed, try a bit more, then give up or cheat... ;) -Myself Nothing can stop me now! -Piggy by Nine Inch NailsI care more for the heavier side of this genre. Fu Manchi, QOTSA, Orange Goblin, etc don't really do it for me. Sleep, Iron Monkey, early Electric Wizard, etc.
A band I'd recommend is Sons of Otis. Very good stuff. Accessible but not soft.
I have Diesel on now. Excellent stuff!
Sons of Otis are good. I have their albums. Anyone here like Spirit Caravan?
Iron Monkey, eh? I'll check 'em out...
If at first ya don't succeed, try a bit more, then give up or cheat... ;) -Myself Nothing can stop me now! -Piggy by Nine Inch NailsIron Monkey are great, but I wouldn't classify them as stoner metal. Most people would consider them sludge, but they're really just doom with harsh vocals, though they're not far off from early Eyehategod.
Speaking of sludge, along with Eyehategod, Grief are the kings of the genre. None of the "post-metal" or "tough guy" Crowbar type of stuff for me.

For we shall slay evil with logic...Agree about Eyehategod and Grief, great bands for sure. Though I have no problems with Crowbar myself. Some Post-Metal is alright with me, really depends on the band. Don't listen to most of the newer bands in the genre, anyways...
Basically, I don't care whether or not hipsters listen to a band or genre. If I like a band, I'm not gonna let some horn-rimmed-glasses-wearing phony morons ruin it for me. Besides, I don't dislike hispters on the basis of WHAT they like, KI dislike them on the basis of the fact that they only like it for a little while before they decide it's not cool anymore... And, of course, the attitude. The smugness is too much. Though I've noticed a goodly amount of smugness and abandoning bands/genres among Metalheads too. Just for different reasons (i.e. concern over genre "purity" vs. fashionability). But the result is kinda the same...
Sorry, had to rant. The subject of Post-Metal kinda sets me off like that...
If at first ya don't succeed, try a bit more, then give up or cheat... ;) -Myself Nothing can stop me now! -Piggy by Nine Inch NailsI'm surprised no shitstorm has erupted yet... I'm waiting for it.
I do tend to agree that Post-Metal isn't any kind of Doom or Sludge Metal though. It's a separate genre thing, making it weird that it's listed under Doom Metal here. I just don't get all the hate, since I like some of it personally. It does bug me that there are so damn many bands doing it though... It was better when it was just a few. There are a lot of bandwagon jumpers...
If at first ya don't succeed, try a bit more, then give up or cheat... ;) -Myself Nothing can stop me now! -Piggy by Nine Inch NailsAhem. Moving on...
Anybody here like High On Fire? Been listening to a lot of them lately. Good band, and they have ex-members of Sleep (another great band) to boot...
If at first ya don't succeed, try a bit more, then give up or cheat... ;) -Myself Nothing can stop me now! -Piggy by Nine Inch NailsI'm not the sort of person who gives people shit for liking stuff I don't like. At least we agree that it shouldn't be called sludge.
I don't think HOF are bad or anything, but they're not really my thing. Good drummer though.
For we shall slay evil with logic...Fair enough. I never really assumed you were though, it was more a case of the mention of Post-Metal setting off a Berserk Button of mine than anything. For which I apologize.
Agreed. That's some pretty impressive drumming they have going on...
If at first ya don't succeed, try a bit more, then give up or cheat... ;) -Myself Nothing can stop me now! -Piggy by Nine Inch NailsSaw them play live, and gave an impression. I thought they were pretty cool.
I looked for it, and I found no posts on this exact subject, just one on the more general topic of "stoner music" (which made little mention of this genre).
Anyone else here like this stuff? I'm personally a fan of bands like Kyuss, QOTSA, Monster Magnet, Clutch, Atomic Bitchwax, Fu Manchu, Nebula, Sixty Watt Shaman and Orange Goblin on the less Doom-oriented end of things and Sleep, mid-period Cathedral, Acrimony, Electric Wizard, Spirit Caravan, Bongzilla, High On Fire, Acid King and Church of Misery on the Stoner/Doom tip...
