People die every day. Some of them are famous, some important, many newsworthy. This thread is for announcements of deaths in the news, discussions of the legacy of those recently deceased people, and memorials of same.

Please observe the usual rules about posting ettiquette and note that this is in On-Topic Conversations.

To start with, the last of the original Von Trapp Singers has died, Maria Von Trapp, 99, in Vermont. (This is the daughter of Captain Von Trapp, not her stepmother who was also named Maria. In the musical, they called her Louisa.) http://news.yahoo.com/maria-von-trapp-99-dies-vermont-005546425.html

2023 mod note:

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

This doesn't mean that you can't discuss their life or legacy, or express an opinion as to whether they escaped justice for their actions. But if that starts to become a longer conversation, there are other OTC threads that may be more appropriate.

Stephen Furst, best known for playing Flounder in Animal House has passed away at the age of 63 from complications from diabetes.

He's also the latest member of the Babylon 5 cast to die before reaching his seventies, which is a rather distressing trend.

Richard Bigg, Andreas Katsulas, Jeff Conaway, Jerry Doyle, Michael O'Hare...and now Stephen Furst. So damn sad. A talented actor and a super nice guy.

I'll always remember him as Vir from Babylon 5.

Simone Veil has died, aged 89. She was the one who pushed the law to legalize abortion in France in 1974. She also spent nine months in Auschwitz during WWII, and was the first elected president of the European Parliament in 1979.

If I get a chance to reflect on my life when I die, I'll probably think about whether I left behind something that the world will continue to have and appreciate after I'm gone. (I mean, I'm not sure that thought will occur to me, but I'd imagine it would.) If I had the survival of a species that was going extinct on my CV, I'd feel quite content with my contribution. Nobody does something like that alone, obviously, but if you're the driving force in an effort like that you have every reason to feel very proud.

She voiced the elusive, mysterious Madam Web in the 90's spidey cartoon.

One of the best performances in that show.
