Inside No 9 is a Black Comedy anthology series from creator/writer/actors Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton (The League Of Gentlemen).

Each episode's standalone plot takes place in a single location (a different house or flat with the address 9). On top of this, individual episodes have used further constraints, such as happening in Real Time, having most of the action take place in a wardrobe, or doing a [nearly] No-Dialogue Episode.

Only two episodes have aired so far, but it already seems to be the 2014 equivalent of Black Mirror: ambitious, clever, well-made, simultaneously "contemporary" and "classic" in feel, dark as hell, and full of British character actors you know from other things. It doesn't get much better than that.

I watched the first episode of this. Very good, funny and creepy. I'm not sure we needed both the song and the name check at the end though, I think I'd have understood the twist without either.

I watch a lot more classic telly than I do modern, it was weird seeing a lot of the cast up to 10 years older. The one who I actually saw in something last year had perceptibly gained weight too.

Not sure if I'll watch every episode or just the ones that sound interesting. How would you rate the second episode?

Am I a good man or a bad man?

I liked it a lot. Despite being a No-Dialogue Episode, things escalate in a similar way to the previous one — and with not one, but two storylines running through the episode. I could have done without a second Bury Your Gays in a row, but I'm willing to let that slide. Oh, and I guess it's unlikely that anyone would try to commit a burglary while the house's inhabitants and staff are awake, but since that's what generates all the slapstick and suspense, I'm on board.

I just realized what the first two episodes remind me of, in terms of humour, darkness and twist endings: Roald Dahl short stories. That's not a bad thing.

I'm not sure we needed both the song and the name check at the end though, I think I'd have understood the twist without either.

Yeah, that's true, it was a bit heavy-handed.

Series 2 is now in production. Some interesting guest stars involved.
