I don't know how many handball fans are here but I still wanted to start the thread. Today, the European mens handball championships started. They're playing in Denmark. The group phase has the following teams up against each other:

Group A: Denmark, Macedonia, Austria, Czech Republic

Group B: Spain, Iceland, Norway, Hungary

Group C: Serbia, France, Poland, Russia

Group D: Croatia, Sweden, Belarus, Montenegro

The big tournament favorites are Denmark, Spain, France and Croatia, but this being the European championships, anyone could make a result.

I'm not big on handball, though I'll consider following it a bit more. What are the teams that have a better chance of winning?

Denmark, Spain, France and Croatia are teams with the biggest chance. I would have said Macedonia yesterday, but with the 8 goal defeat they faced against Denmark, I don't believe in them anymore. Sweden are playing close to home, and the Icelandic is rather strong too (plus being nordic helps, as nordic fans support usually support each other's teams). Serbia has a really strong team too, but I don't know how well they'll perform without being backed by their fans.

The group of death would be group C, as every team could make a good result in the tournament. I would say Russia is the weakest team in that group, but we won't truly know yet.

I don't believe in the Czech, Belarussian and Montenegro teams. The Czech and Belarus teams are a bit too dependent on one player, while the Montenegro team is a bit weaker than the rest. I would have mentioned Austria here too, but a 10 goal victory during this tournament is something to be taken seriously. I don't have high hopes for Norway (despite being nordic) either, as they're usually weak late in the tournament, as their players aside from the first 7-9 lack the class.

In conclusion, the following teams could make a good result: Denmark, Croatia, Spain, France, Iceland, Serbia, Poland, Hungary, Russia, Austria and maybe Norway. It would be a huge surprise if Austria makes it to the semis.

I don't know how strong the Portugese team is. They got eliminated in qualification, in a group with Spain, Macedonia and Switzerland - 3rd, one point after Macedonia. In a weaker group, Portugal could have qualified. I would assume that the best Portugese players play for Spanish teams.

The results from yesterday:

Group A: Czech Republic 20-30 Austria Denmark 29-21 Macedonia

Group B: Spain 34-27 Hugary Iceland 31-26 Norway

Well, playing at home will certainly give an advantage to your team.

The Portuguese team is not great, but I hope we'll get back in the next edition. I don't think most of the them play in Spanish teams nowadays.

41-32…

… Well that was surprising. ò.Ô We're talking about Denmark, the host country and favorite team. The French had a bad habit of starting great and then resting on their laurels, but it didn't happen this time.

This new generation is really promising. smile Though the defence still seems a bit weak…
