How would a street kid from a post-apocalyptic steampunk future...

describe 21st century music? I'm on a scene in my current project where the Dodger hears old music from a hundred years ago= 21st century— and compares it to the music he hears, which is steampunk music, a combination of Victorian and post-Victorian influences. I was thinking it would also include ballads and vaudeville songs from before the 1950s (like "Marble Halls", "Rebecca Came Back From Mecca", "Alexander's Ragtime Band," "Palasteena", "Egyptian Ella". This version of ''Oliver Twist" is set in NYC instead of London, because I know more about NYC than London)

How would I describe 21st century music through the eyes of someone living in an era where our music is thought of in the same light as steampunk music, a kind of niche/nerdy interest?

What do you mean by 21st-century music? He could just call it 'noise'.

Ok, which 21st century music? We've got more than one genre. What is he listening, some heavy-ass rock, dubstep, or epic ones like Three Steps From Hell, rap music, Miracle Of Sound, what?

I think you're trying to describe someone reacting to stuff from a different era, and trying to handle the contrast. Well, pick what actual music he's listening to, try to remember your own first experience of listening to that music, and portray that. If you need the character to like it, it'll be easier to pick the music you like then, and vice versa.

I was thinking of something along the lines of dubstep, hip-hop or rap. And more recent rock songs.

Ok then, what was your first reaction when you heard that kind of music?

I remember I couldn't handle the sound. That might be something to keep in mind.
