[up]I agree. And there is also no need, Frostav, to imply that anyone who doesn't get the point of the game is a 'mindless drone' and that anyone who does is somehow superior in some way.

I know procedural generation has been used for decades, Hello Games knows it, Sony knows it. Hell, everyone knows about it thanks to Minecraft. But they (Sony and/or Hello Games) are still making a big deal out of it, so it can come off a bit like stereotypical marketing hyperbole.

And the Peter Molyneux comparison isn't entirely inaccurate, since Sean Murray is certainly passionate enough about the game and is making some big promises. But they seem to have a pretty clear outline of what you can do in the game, if he delivers on the list of content mentioned in the articles and interviews, personally I think he's really got something. But whether it's all it's cracked up to be simply remains to be seen.

As for the concert... Eh, chalk one up to the nonbelievers. Live gameplay accompanied by live music would have been an incredibly good demonstration, so if they can't just jump into the game right now, skepticism is to be expected.

Basically, key announcement for NMS from the Playstation event is the band, since they'll be doing the soundtrack, and it was mentioned in an interview that the soundtrack itself will be "procedurally generated," or at least dynamic, so that should be interesting.

So good news: Game looks and sounds good. Bad news: All the game does is look good and sound good.

Honestly, best to cool the hype jets and forget the game exists for a year, and hope it delivers.

It actually sort of reminds me of those X games, where you have a ship and can go around doing things.

I understand what procedurally generated is, I've wasted hours in Space Engine. What I just mean is how much exciting stuff you can do inside of it? Like with all the ships flying around such like that? Will that happen often?

Also from a development point. I mean its one thing to have a bunch of stuff, but its another to try to make it meaningful.

Like what about the animals? Did they not mention they were procedurally generated too? That will be...weird to get right.

Is there an updated mega-post somewhere with all the currently known information? I keep trying to get interested in this game but I honestly know nothing about it.

Is using "Julian Assange is a Hillary butt plug" an acceptable signature quote?

Not necessarily a trailer, per se, but this Game Informer Magazine interview with Sean Murray is pretty interesting, at the very least; it gives us an idea of how the Procedural Generation system in the game works:

The part that excites me so much is the use of procedural stuff for everything. I can't wait to see what kind of animals, ships, space stations, freighters, and other such nice stuff I find.

Especially animals. Let's hope I never encounter one of those worms that were the size of a city block at night...

[up] I'm still convinced that Usnusven II's Sand Worms are actually sand snakes, rather than actual worms—they certainly have more in common with the latter than the former.

There are sand worms in this one? I haven't seen any in the trailers I've seen.

All I've seen so far are rats with tusks, antelope, ram-like things, giant prehistoric rhinoceroses, giant prehistoric luminescent rhinoceroses, giant flying and eels, fish, sharks, stegosaurs, and brachiosaur-like things.

I have to say, the alien life in this game is the part I'm the most excited for by a large margin.

They're at 1:36 of this. You only see their tail, and they are huge.

I still have yet to see a game in this...

I love the look of this but my only worry is.... well...

Flying is grand. Exploring is grand. Seeing other ships is grand. But what about the interaction? I know we upgrade ships and can improve equipment, but do the ships belong to factions? Do they have bases? Or are they unaffiliated NP Cs which are just there for flavour?

Will there be trade (Not thinking Ev E level complexity by any means) or side missions? Can I talk to NP Cs?

Or is it just "fly, keep on flying, look at the pretty."

Scope is great, but sandboxes let you imagine. A sandbox that only lets you play one way loses its pull after a bit. It's why GTA games tend to leave me cold after a bit - ooo a big world, but still with the linear story? Whatever I do outside of the missions doesn't matter?

That said, I love it, but I don't knwo what to expect. I'm not expecting a huge world then a linear story with Mass Effect characters. But I would like to see personality in there as well.

Having read the Reddit post, my fears are a little assuaged - there seems to be something of a story, but its one you find, with elements of factions and impact.

So, still stoked, but a little apprehensive. I just remember how Spore left me feeling a bit hollow in the space stage.

Apparently this was made as the technology first and then the devs went "Oh crap we should make a game for this."

Jereklaz Since: Jun, 2014

Well, hopefully it'll be example of a prototype, with the tech then being used as a base to build better worlds for other games.

Will see how it pans out. I am still optimistic, and whilst I like bleak games, I want to feel interested in not just the spectacle. The idea that there is something else in the world that gives you purpose is good.

That said, I don't wnat them to jettison it in favour a linear series of missions on pretty planets. I remember what happened to Breed....

I recall Minecraft being pretty pointless and lacking an endgame at first, yet it ended up being a massive smash hit in the long run. So that means the devs just need to keep the content flowing, or open up the game to the modding community somehow or another.

[up]At the very least, going to the center of the galaxy will serve as the underlying direction of the game, so there is a "point" to the game even if it isn't actually the focus. But I'm also interested in how mods will be incorporated into the game.

Some more articles have cropped up about the game's vision, intent, and inspiration.

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/oct/28/no-man-sky-creator-we-wanted-to-build-a-universe (actually from October, but still very informative)

http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/dec/10/no-mans-sky-why-minecraft-generation-will-reject-call-of-duty

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2014/12/10/stop-thinking-of-no-man-s-sky-as-a-multiplayer-game.aspx

Certainly some very interesting stances being taken, but I can't say I really have a problem with any of them.

And here's an article back from E3 that explains their relative media silence.

If you aren't aware, GameInformer's been doing coverage of No Man's Sky for the past month or so, and now they're giving us the opportunity to ask head dev Sean Murray questions about the game. Feel free to ask whatever burning questions are in the back of your mind!

We have a new Game Informer article! This one's about the game's soundtrack, which is mostly procedural but does have original music by 65daysofstatic, who had licensed out their tracks "Debutante" and "Pacify" for the premiere, infinite worlds, and E3 trailers.
