3.5 - One of those cases where it feels way too much like a band attempting to take the most pedestrian kind of stop-and-go bouncy riffing and drape it up in a rough guitar tone. You fundamentally have really neutered music one way or the other but it becomes so transparent when a band tries so hard to distract from the lack of bite by more or less dressing it up in extra layers of clothing.
Crematory - Beneath the Crypts

Light 7-ish? The chord progressions and melodies are fine but the execution is not compelling, particularly the lifeless clean vocals and wannabe -core guitar thud.
Silkworm, "Enough is Enough" (In the West, C/Z Records, 1994).
I'll hide your name inside a word and paint your eyes with false perception.6.5 - The drumming rather than the guitar work ends up carrying most of the heaviness with a fill-laden, meaty approach which juxtaposes the thickly textured jangly chords that are a bit more background grating than immediate punchiness.
Hard 7. Despite the industrial trappings, the underlying melodies and grooves here are more swaggering hard rock than anything else. Fun, good for headbanging, but not especially heavy.
Oranssi Pazuzu, "Värähtelijä" (Värähtelijä, Svart, 2016).
I'll hide your name inside a word and paint your eyes with false perception.Around 6 or 7, more dark than actually heavy. However, the question must be asked, can something be rated on a level of 9 or 10 while still being melodic? On that note, here's one of Slayer's more melodic numbers (at least by Slayer standards): Seasons in the Abyss:
6.5 - Basically simplified crowd-pleasing heavy metal with a bit of a thrashy tinge .The chorus in particular comes off as all but tossing the riffing out to let somewhat half-hearted vocals try and fumble to sing in a way that ends up making the song come off as far more airy and lightweight than it needed to be.
7. Despite the growled vocals, the instrumentation is pretty light and brings it down compared what most songs featuring the vocal style would have.
Author.7. There's some heavy guitar work but the prominent electronics kind of bring it down a bit.
4.5 - Might've been slightly higher if the rhythms weren't so plain and basically used in a way not too different from a snare drum; mostly keeping time with vague riff-shaped guitar thuds whose tame nature the harsher vocals can barely hide.
Unable to rate due to the account being terminated.
A hard 7. The riff itself is heavy, but the nu metal production brings it down a notch.
Nonsense is better than no sense at all.6.5 - Feels like the build up to something heavy rather than a heavy thing in and of itself. A lot of subdued single note riffing and simple drumming moving in for a few select accents. Some of the eerie effects they add do push it up a little though.
I knew even before I hit play that it would be a 10. Maybe it's even an 11, 'cause parts of it are just a wall of noise. I'll admit that there were some cool riffs interspersed between all the noise, though.
8. It has very heavy riffs and gruff vocals, but also melody in the mix.
5.5 - I feel bands like this aren't necessarily trying to be heavy as much as they are kind of uplifting I guess? I mean there's some basic power chord guitar thuds in the background but burying them under an overly prominent synth sound seems to go against the point of heaviness and the harsh vocals barely fare any better in the mix. Going into choruses with all the sugary satisfaction of an FM radio pop hit only further pushes that vibe.
a 9 I'd say. Vocals are harsh, but the instrumentation could be heavier.
8 - You would think that Thrash Metal & Doom Metal would be incompatible genres, but this feels like an effective middle ground between the two. Relatively restrained and atmospheric by Slayer standards, but still evil-sounding and intense.
7.5 - Nears eight but its streamlined single string speed metal attack can only take it so far. Meaty production though, strong midrange even though somewhat lacking in bass presence.
10. Pretty heavy shit right there.
A hard 7. Gives the impression of power metal with a heavier kick drum and fatter bass tone.
Nonsense is better than no sense at all.
