[up] Fair enough. Utarm's approach definitely leans more toward the abrasive and sinister than actually heavy. I also actually enjoy subway noises, for what it's worth.

As for your track there...

Hard 8 to a light 9. Could be more inhuman and brutal, being just a touch too melodic and weak in bass presence outside the drums to really take things all the way. Still, wonderfully evil, with those aforementioned cannon-fire toms and wicked leads being particularly sumptuous.

Prurient, "Silver Flashlight" (Black Vase, Load Records, 2005).

Speaking of the abrasive and sinister.

Mmm... hard 8, got that thrashing wall-of-sound going on, and it's designed to hit you hard as they all do at the harder levels.

7. A classic metal inspired track that takes its cues from Black Sabbath with some violin thrown in. Seems about right.

5.5 - "You know, what if Linkin Park had breakdownchugthugdouchebrocore and the lyrics were made to have more confrontational Tapout teeshirt dudebro appeal?" Cuz at its heart, that's basically what this is. Sure it might chug a bit harder and go for some vaguely hardcore style faster strummed riffing, but neither of these really fundamentally change the core idea of whiny, self-pitying verses that make way for big sappy choruses with the amount of bleeding sentimentality of a glam track but filtered out to appeal to the Hot Topic crowd.

No offense dude, and I know I've said it before, but that doesn't even sound like a review of the song's hardness as much as it sounds like you complaining about the song itself (and assigning a low score because you didn't like it, again, not how this works). I suggest you read up on the Moh's Scale here.

Anyways, that's a 10. As much as I hate death metal, I can't deny how heavy it is and painful to the ears it is to listen to, which is a contribution to its hardness.

How about some classic heavy metal?

[up] Given that all my criticism aims itself at how the song attempts to be heavy in a brocore chugthug way but mostly flops as if it's glam metal track, I think you're the one getting a little iffed at a bit of common criticism I imagine you'd be used to by now. I'm under no obligation to rate a song according to someone else's preference on the scale.

Can both of you not argue? I don't want this turning into another argument between your different views of metal. Let's just focus on grading the songs.

[up][up] Your song is a 6. It's classic heavy metal. It's not particularly heavy.

9. A short and loud burst of noise. The beginning kind of brings it down a little for being soft.

Sounds like a 4, 5 to be generous

Now here's an easy one, Accept: Fast as a Shark (sometimes called the first thrash metal song):

7.5 - A simple cast iron riff, a few cutting chords, and Udo's hellish voice give this speed metal ripper considerable wrathfulness for its time.

9.5. Definitely up there, and though not pleasant to listen to is a heavy track.

A hard 7 to a light 8. Impressively menacing and wonderfully energetic but also a bit too repetitive for this particular style to feel as oppressive and sinister as it could. Still great.

10 - The original purveyors of nocturnal fullmoon goat sodomy and other such wonders. In a way Blasphemy and the war metal they were fundamental to inspiring remind a lot more of grindcore in its abrupt tearaway riffing under mayhemic blastbeats but mixed with the black metal tendency for turning abstracted riffing into pure textural torture. While it leaves a bit to be desired in terms of dynamics of approach, the wash of pure filth and unrepentant savagery was devastatingly effective for 1990 and still holds a feral mysticism to itself today.

10. I can see why this band never went anywhere. They made pure scumfuck music that flat out makes your ears hurt, focusing nothing on melody or listenable sound. For that reason, it ranks high in terms of hardness.

[up][up][up] Blasphemy is some sick shit and I love it. Those guitar leads.

[up] A hard 8. About as hard as this sort of alt-rock-inflected metal gets, although a more dynamic bass presence would have really taken this to another level in terms of personal enjoyment. It's really fun as-is, though. I really need to listen to more Mastodon.

The Dead C, "Power" (Clyma Est Mort, Siltbreeze, 1992).

6. Loud but not heavy, it's really just a bunch of harsh noise that doesn't feel hard-hitting at all.

5.5 - Having Alvin and the Chipmunks sing over stop-stutter chord progressions is a surefire way to make your music the equivalent of maybe accidentally getting hit by a swim noodle at the pool. The former is too helium-addicted to actually provide any impact, the latter isn't so much riffing as much as rhythmic placeholder, and together the only vaguely punching thing about it is the production and even that's a stretch.

9. It's hard and heavy, but it just doesn't "punch" in the same way that other black metal songs do, which have been known to make me have to turn the volume down.

7 - This one unintentionally (?) ends up working against its own implied heaviness by having a surprisingly uplifting, almost slightly upbeat sounding main lead riff with sustained vocals pretending to be a one man choir behind it, almost as if they're taking a traditional doom track and pretending to be Skepticism with it. It ends up sounding kind of goofy in that sense, relaxing as opposed to crushing.

8. This is surprisingly on the softer end of a brutal death metal track, mainly because of the guitar at times being softer. Also, the vocals growl but they don't carry a sense of weight to me.
