It was not underrated. Most people loved it.
Just to note that you could do variation of nemesis system that doesn't rely on player losing a lot xP
Yeah, you could tinker with it. First experiment doesn't always hit the sweet spot.
I'm curious to see how that upcoming batman game handles the idea. Character base already has easier time on it due to not needing to justify them somehow surviving getting stabbed several times.
For example they can have events actually happen on a time limit rather than waiting for you eternally, but that in itself can have downsides too.

Exactly - Imagine a GTA like where they progressed by removing / kidnapping their rivals in the organisation - You could adjust it so that if you were arrested / resting / after a long mission out of town things changed.
Or expand on the Mercenaries "Deck of cards" system - have a ficitonal sci fi open world war zone.
I am looking forward to this. SOM I blitzed through, all collectibles, just hoovered it up. Such a satisfying game. The story felt a bit truncated and the final battle was a surprise, in that I only had 5 Orcs (I think it's supposed to spawn you with five orces and their affiliated Hordes... but it's glitched)
If they can expand on that and make the environments a little less... flat.. then so much the better.
The semi-final battle, on the island, is just you and five warchiefs vs. one nemesis and a bunch of mooks. Siege of the gates has you with mooks and maybe some captains vs five warchief-tier orcs.

@Envyus, so maybe not underrated exactly. But, given how innovative it was, it fel t tro me like not enough people were raving about this game.
Absolutely! I miss Mercenaries. Had a lot of fun with that series. Not enough games make use of the concept of the Nemesis system, and more could stand to. "Sci fi open world warzone" roughly describes one of my concepts for a personal dream game.

yeyAnother series that could incorporate it is if they made another [PROTOTYPE] - officers you kill getting revived with modern med tech and maybe more Super Serum or hell go for cybernetics; you can infect them and place as pawns like Mercer did in 2.... Hell they could have another Plague Master running around and inserting their own pawns. With a second Nemesis table for big Hunters and other outright monsters too.

It'd work really well for those FPS strategy hybrids. Heck, even if you made it so there were monsters in a food chain, you could make an RPG with it as a background system for whichever SPECIES was dominant in an area.
Red Faction Guerilla, mixed with a bit of Mercenaries / Mass Effect and the nemesis system would be awesome...
Well apparently they are going to be expanding the Nemesis system in the sequel.
That is the face of a man who just ate a kitten. Raw.I think you'd enjoy the Arkham games.
Batman damn near perfected that combat. It made button mashing feel stylish. Mad Max didn't quite get it (though still satifsying) - SOM managed it just about. But BATMAN IS KING.
I've liked SOM's combat much more than MM's. Haven't gotten around to any Batmans yet though.
Building up combo to do finishers was amazing. Max meanwhile just punch punch punch, block when needed. Fury was just random +damage proc. The gun also sucked while archery was very nice and integrated with the combos. Various runes were a bit of a grind, but customisation is awesome - while Max's upgrades are just +x defence/hp/damage and thats all (car upgrades are also just increment stats, with a sudden jump to "ok now you're overpowered as hell" once you get the thunderpoon).

Building up combos is so ridiculously satisfying, along with the damage raises and all. Just makes you feel terrifying when you play it.
I'm looking forward to this - should've finished Andromeda, Prey and Horizon by the time it launches too!
Proper gameplay trailer is out.
Yeah, we've been nerding out over in the SOW thread.
That is the face of a man who just ate a kitten. Raw.Oh huh. I didn't notice there was a separate thread.
Well, this is a hilarious abuse of the good old system with amazing results.
This is wonderful news. Shadow of Mordor was fucking great, an absolute underrated and unrecognized gem. The last place I'd have expected to turn out new and innovative game mechanics was Warner Brothers, all the credit in the world to Monolith for the great work they did.
Can't wait!
