"Yup. That tasted purple."I was about to ask if the Philippinos were prepared for that, but then it occurred to me that you can't really prepare to 300 km/h winds.
Anyone knows what's the closest we got to a Super Typhoon like that?
"We" being the USA/North America?
That would be Hurricane Wilma, the 1935 Labor Day Hurricane, Hurricane Camille, and Hurricane Andrew.
Schild und Schwert der ParteiWe, in the whole world really, we don't wanna be exclusionary.
It's pretty scary tho that Haiyan had 380 km/h peak winds, while the closest NA hurricanes had like 305 winds.
It's surreal seeing a Sunday article being quite chill with it, and then on Monday: "BAM! Front page! 10k dead!"
I'm worried.

Everything is Possible. But some things are more Probable than others. JEBAGEDDON 2016No typhoon anywhere else really 'came close'. The only ones that had faster winds were those in the 30s-60s, where speed measurements were not as reliable as they were in the years after.
There were a couple that had roughly the same speeds, but they lost some speed, once they made landfall.
In Haiyan's case, it barely lost speed once it landed.
I'm reading this because it's interesting. I think. Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot, over.I'm based in the NCR, so I'm fine. Typhoon didn't bother much aside from rain.
Lot of countries are sending in SAR teams, including DART from Canada. Russia's getting in a mobile hospital with EMERCOM doctors.
Think it's the first time they've been here, unless I'm wrong. I know that. EMERCOM been to other parts of SEA, IIRC.
Expect JGSDF troops to arrive in the Philippine for SAR ops aside from EMERCOM medical personnel.

"Yup. That tasted purple."No surprise. New People's Army fighters are the main source of trouble. Perhaps they're going to get the supplies to give them more credibility.
Seems like you moved just in time.
and people wonder why the U.S. has a tendency to bring guns with them on these kinds of missions.
I'm baaaaaaackAbout the NPA attack, it might not be that accurate. Also, nearly a week after the storm, Philippines criticized for slow and disorganized response.
"If music be the food of love, PLAY ON" - William ShakespeareI'm not surprised. It took a few days for stuff to get to us(my part of new jersey) after sandy and that was A- nothing compared to this absolute shitstorm B- In America.
It's a good thing a lot of foreign aids on the way though. plus the USS Washington's en route, means plenty of fresh water if nothing else.
I'm baaaaaaackI direct you to Question Marc's previous comment:
I'm going to say this, the winds weren't that big of a deal. It is always the surge that the biggest killer in tropical cyclones.
Just take a look at Galveston back in 1900 or 2008, and Sandy, can't forget about the surge from her
Aren't the Philippines mostly near sea level?

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Don't wind speeds affect surge volume?
Share it so that people can get into this conversation, 'cause we're not the only ones who think like this.Surge size is based off a number of factors: including pressure of the storm, how far out the continental shelf is from land, the shape of the land itself, whether high or low tide is occurring, and the direction the wind is going.
In order to keep this from getting too cluttered, I'd recommend moving any Tropical weather discussion to this thread. Its kinda dead anyways.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Canadian DART soldiers are in country. They're going to be mobilized.
It's also official that JGSDF troops are going to be deployed for SAR ops.
China gives less aid to the Philippines than Ikea.

In case you haven't heard, the Phillipines got kinda wrecked by Typhoon Haiyan recently.
First order of business: all Filipino tropers okay? I know we had a few here on OTC.
