My family's 1st generation iPad is having some trouble with the store. I can't redeem codes on it anymore, and the store app crashes frequently. The first generation seems to be no longer supported past iOS 5, because it says it's up to date with the 5.x it came refurbished out of the box with. I haven't found any mention of compatibility issues in the store with version 5, but whenever I search for iPad 1 I almost exclusively get results for gen. 2 and 3, and when I search about iOS 5, I get results about 6 and 7.

I have an iphone 4 if that counts? It is my previous phone though. I now have a Samsung Galaxy. I still use Itunes to watch some things also

The iPad not processing my gift card is what finally forced me to get iTunes on my main computer again. And then I spent most of that gift card on the newly recovered Doctor Who serials. It's better to have those on my desktop anyway, because watching stuff on a tablet is even more uncomfortable than a desktop, and I can potentially break the DRM and conform it to my personal preferences here.

I have an iphone 4 and I am wondering if getting a bluetooth keyboard for it would be a horrible idea.

I chose the (Android) phone I currently have because I was seduced by the physical keyboard. I don't want to go back, even though phone manufacturers seem to have given up on physical keyboards. My next phone will be getting a keyboard case pronto.

Well the thing is that I was thinking of using my phone for actual writing/work because it's very lightweight and portable, and for that I would actually need something close to a full-size keyboard. Phones with tiny physical keyboards don't do it for me.

Ah. Well, it'd work. People do it. I'd rather have a larger screen for that kind of work though.

I usually see full size keyboards connected to phones when the user has the phone set up to function as a desktop replacement, with a large monitor, mouse, and everything.

Wait, right. Apple. I don't know specifically about the iPhone.

Yeah, they do that. Would you prefer to pay more and get one that folds up for travel, or something much cheaper, but rigid?

I was actually eyeing the silicone ones that roll up but on second thought that might not be such a great idea. Silicone might slow down my typing speed. Because it would be in a backpack probably a rigid one, as long as it's small and lightweight would not be so bad.

I'm just thinking that it would either be great and I would be able to type things wherever or it would be a horrible idea because the screen is too small and it would in general be too unweildy to use seriously.

I used to have a Galaxy and was pretty anti-Apple. I started having problems with it and finally caved when my mom and I switched carriers and they were offering 5c's for $99. So I got one. After about a week or two of adjustment I started to love it. The lack of true customization (ie things other than cosmetic) were not an issue when I realized I never actually did that on Android. Many of the features that I had to download an App for on Android were standard and default on iPhone. Overall I was very pleased.

It also has iTunes on it. The only thing I liked better on Android was Google maps which I use on the iPhone anyway. I just wish it was possible to change Siri to use Google maps instead of Apples program. The actual maps on the default app actually aren't that bad I just dislike the user interface and how everything appears.

I really think the 5c was a very smart move on Apple's part and I'm surprised they didn't do it sooner. Android's main appeal was that you could get it on a cheap phone. Of course you'd have to deal with the fact that you had a cheapie phone, but it was still a smartphone — pretty much everyone I've heard who's used both prefers iOS to android. Now that the price is right for more people the folks they're losing out on are the people who want phablets and those who have personal reasons to not like apple.

I've used both, and prefer Android. iOS is like being given a hammer and being told you can only use it to drive one size of nails.

Android is like being given a ratcheting wrench with a thousand heads. You'll probably never need most of them, and some of them you'll need to pay for, but they're really handy when you do. And I often do.

I keep getting Apple products not completely of my own free will. Won an iPod Touch in a competition, school made me get an iPad (not updating to iOs 7 until it stops looking like a cartoon) and got a hand-me-down iPhone 4 for Christmas.

My family has been a Apple product family for years.

My dad has piles upon piles of Macs, three members of my family have I-Pads, all of us have I-phones.

That's just how it's been. I can use PC's, but that's from trying them out at school.

It's worked well for us for the most part.
