No problem. I needed a break from the editing I was doing for someone else anyway.

Hey gang, currently writing a crossover of Killer Instinct and RWBY, titled KLLR RWBY

Ironically, the first story stars JNPR, but that's not what I'm asking.

Anybody here read Moby Dick? Because I have characters based on Ahab and Ishmael, any suggestions on what to put in their characters that alludes to their original selves? Especially the quotes, because wikiquote is kinda useless since it doesn't put who said what. I know Ishmael did "Call me Ishmael" which I already added, and Ahab has his "I spit at thee" which I'll add when the flashback is over... but I feel that something else is missing.

Sure, I could add narrations from the book into the fanfic in certain lines of the narration, but again it's missing something, and I don't know what.

Also, someone based on Nemo from 20K Leagues is there.

The Games We Play, the RWBY fanfic currently more popular than RWBY itself.

Starts off as an Affectionate Parody of The Gamer, then drops all pretenses of following RWBY canon and... now it's just "Better Than Canon" with its own story arcs and... to tell you the truth, I didn't really like The Gamer. I sort of stopped caring about this fic once it stopped being a "RWBY" fic, but others would disagree with that sentiment.

It's certainly well-liked.

Going by the trope page it looks like a Jaune-centric power fantasy, so I'm just going to NOPE as far away from that as possible.

TGWP is...weird for me. Like, I like it a lot because it's got good dialogue and action scenes (which are occasionally marred by their relying on Jaune constantly pulling new tricks out of vaguely-developed nowhere) and the game mechanics are consistently and cleverly applied. Ryuugi does a lot of good work with his central conceit, and I respect that.

The problem is that the story is written like a video game story. This is good, because that's the **entire point of the concept**, but this is bad because, well...game stories? Are more often than not power fantasies. Which makes it, as said above, Yet Another Jaune Power Fantasy. One where Jaune is, thanks to his new semblance, basically Jaune In Name Only. That, and the fact that much of the story is made up of either incredibly detailed training montages—which ARE accurate representations of grinding, admittedly—or DBZ-style fight sequences, make it hard for me to recommend.

But then there's the part where this manages to take the mythology and characters of the show and build on them beautifully. Like, the only other stories which have managed to pull off that level of expansion in ways that feel totally natural and believable to the original arethings like Rearranging the Board and The Gentle Art of Making Enemies. It takes characters like Adam and make them likeable, creates totally reasonable expansions of the Grimm and has OCs which feel like completely natural additions. And that's just plain impressive and keeps me around even when the flaws I pointed out start to bug me.

Video game stories are mostly power fantasies? You obviously play a lot of games that have the bare minimum requirement for stories. Sure, video games usually empower you by giving you agency but there's a difference between that and a power fantasy. A good example of a straight up power fantasies is basically every regular shooter in existence.

Oh don't get me wrong there are a lot of video games that aren't power fantasies at all. Stuff like Papers Please for instance, or Spec Ops The Line are things I definitely wouldn't include in that list. But a lot of the most popular games out there—stuff like Far Cry 3, for instance, or more recently I'd argue Dragon Age: Inquisition—most definitely meet the criteria.

But to keep from going too far off-topic, TGWP (and this is partially inherited from the original webcomic) is definitely trying to ape the style of game where the player character is the literal centre of the universe. Recent chapters especially have brought up some settings details which particularly reinforce that by making Jaune somehow tied to the actual source of all Grimm which is a plot twist which will either turn out to be genius which ties everything together or colossal stupidity. Or both. My money's on a bit of both.

Truthfully, I don't particularly care for where Jaune becomes a Badass fighter. I feel like his schtick is going to be that he's a really good planner/strategist, but that he'll only ever be an average fighter (by Hunter standards). We have enough fighting baddasses in this show, so I'd rather he be a tactical genius (CREEEEEEEEEEEED!) than an awesome fighter.

They're grieving their own way. I dunno what's written, but surely they're not dumb enough to make them... distasteful.

Yeah, a lot of them are really heartwarming/tear jerking.

I don't think I'll be able to many of them anymore though. A lot of the earlier ones are going to be Harsher in Hindsight and I can't stand character death even without real world influence.

One of my big problems with writing RWBY fics was... there just wasn't much to write about. I don't write fan fiction to write my own mini-novels, or to launch an entirely separate D&D campaign. I like to plant a nail, or remove one, and see how the canon changes. With RWBY, that was kind of difficult, because there's so much free space in the narrative, which could've been Jossed at any given moment. I don't enjoy writing like that.

Today, I figured I would get back to writing a RWBY x Borderlands crossover I've had on the backburner for awhile now. But... as much as I'm encouraged to "do something creative" and make some manner of tribute, I don't know. I want to hear what the RT staff has to say first.

Agreed, I think it's great that people are writing all these tributes and such but I think the best thing to do is...I dunno, just take a step back for awhile. Take the next few days to mourn and recover before doing all this.

So, this may be rather morbid but has anyone written a fanfic where Ren suddenly looses his voice yet?

Anybody here remember me babbling on about my Killer Instinct x RWBY fanfic? In honor of Monty, I'm finishing that thing ASAP no matter what. In hindsight, I think it's a good thing I started with JNPR first. I could have Ren say something inspiring or something. I dunno...

Monty is gone, but his spirit lives on within us and his work. I ain't gonna let it die.

Why do I feel like paraphrasing Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann? Fuck it. Let's do this.

Monty Oum is dead. He's gone! But he's right there in our works, and here in our hearts! He lives on as a part of us! If you want to create then aim for the heavens! No matter what's in our way, we won't stop! Once we've broke through - it means that we've won!

I know what I'm doing. I have this short story that I've been working on for some time now and, while it's completely unrelated to his works, Monty's always been one of my principle inspirations for fight scenes so, given how many fight scenes there are in it, I think it's only appropriate that I dedicate it to him.

It's kinda funny that I threw around the idea of my RWBY x Guilty Gear fic, and the concept I had for the climax was planned to be Ruby, after her and her team defeated I-No, dragging the others out of The Backyard at the expense of not being able to save herself from being swallowed up when the space they were in returned to normal (Long story. It was a "Safe Zone" that was set to fade). She even accepted her fate before she was saved by That Man. In light of recent events it's kinda harsher...

Also, the Chapter's name? Lily.

I honestly feel it's a fitting song for what's happened...

Every scene they're in should involve a stereotypical food.

Monkey Faunus eats bananas, bugs (god do I feel racist right now), etc. The other characters needn't draw attention to it, just throw it in the scenery at some point.

Cat Faunus eats... fish. Or has a habit of playing with bobbles and trinkets. Or lands on all-fours when the rest of their group falls on their faces (make it a point that this character never seems off-balance). Also, cats have glowing eyes - and since RWBY has Aura, it might be hard to distinguish that from a Faunus trait.

Deer Faunus - maybe a scene where one extends their arm and nibbles off of something?
