This adventure platformer has recently been released on Desura by Endless Fluff Games and it's been driving me insane. It took me an hour to whittle down a boss' life meter to the halfway point. Then I died when the boss landed a combo which took out over half my life meter in one go.

I love it.

The bosses are difficult but beatable if you are skillful enough. There is a definite pattern to what they do. I love exploring to see where the secret equipment and stuff is hidden and I love playing with the magic and skills. I would have probably beaten the game already if it wasn't for the fun treasure hunting. You don't need all that equipment but it will definitely save your skin. Finding those crew members is freaking difficult.

Then I thought I'd try the one other character available. Reina's fistfighting style was much more challenging compared to the greatsword wielding Wyatt. There is apparently supposed to be four different protagonists to play as but the developers are still making them. By this I mean they're giving them entirely different attacks and play styles with their own stories. I wish it was complete...

The music and pretty graphics are pretty dang spectacular too.

Some guy who's more professional than I am did a more detailed review. http://www.rpgfan.com/reviews/Valdis_Story_Abyssal_City/index.html

Anyone else playing this gem?

Thanks for reminding me it's out! I saw it back when it was on Kickstarter, but I forgot to back it and even forgot what it was called...

It's a decent Metroidvania with a good degree of variety, but it's way too heavy on timed jumping puzzles, far too few quick travel points, the spells are too cumbersome to use on a regular basis and it seems to have far too many stats and systems for a game of its type.

There's just not enough Metroidvania on Steam...

Haven't played it in a while, gotta go back...

Also: how do you unlock the other 2 starting characters that are greyed out?

You don't, they're not finished yet and will be added at a later update.

Man this game is crazy Nintendo Hard. It's been a long time since I last played a Metroidvania game, and even longer since I fought bosses that involve more dodging and weaving of their attacks than just straight up beating them down.

Started a page for it at https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/VideoGame/ValdisStoryAbyssalCity as can largely be expected. Probably in need of character page at some point due to a large number of them.

Added one, not much in the way of content there beyond the names. Would be nice to have some more overall info about various things, it's pretty hard to come by at this point.

Will shove this up just one more time to see if it catches anyone's attention before it sinks off the first page, won't spam any more unless I have something noteworthy to report when it comes to the actual wiki page updates. Hopefully I'll have something meaningful to add to Reina soon and more stuff for Wyatt in comparision to her.

I had played the original demo a while back. Is this game any good?

See comments above: in short, if you liked the demo and want a combat-focused Metroidvania with lots of variety and can put up with weird design decisions, time limits and at times less than stellar platforming, it's worth getting.

They will at some point, apparently the third one's mechanics are almost complete but they still need to write his story and balance the game around him since he starts at a different location from the first 2. He'll probably be available in the next major update along with a bunch of other new mechanics and locations, see http://endlessfluff.wordpress.com/2014/05/16/valdis-story-update/ and http://endlessfluff.wordpress.com/2014/06/03/valdis-story-enemy-development-via-sketches/ for more info.
