Also, do you think there is a Broken Base concerning movie's and show's artstyles?

No, not to my knowledge. There wasn't any controversy over it when the movie was released or afterwards — it was just sort of taken as a given that a theatrical movie would have a bigger animation budget than a tv series.

[up] I asked just in case, since I himself feel pretty conflicted which artstyle is cuter. Like, the girls and Spike already look adorable in show's artstyle, but movie artstyle doubles their cuteness. So the thought over which artstyle is cuter/better has been in my mind for a while.

Oh, right.

I like the show art just fine. The eyes kind of freaked me out in the movie sometimes.

I feel like when it came to a bigger budget feature switching to Toon-Boom was a better move. Flash wasn't nearly as expressive when it came to animation, and it was already on the way out by the time the show reached it's final few seasons I believe. (I don't recall any cartoon after 2015 being animated in Flash anyway)

Thanks to a certain troper who had in march heavily edit The Penguins Of Madagascar pages, I started rewatching The Penguins of Madagascar which next to Friendship Is Magic have been my two most favourite TV shows in my childhood. The fact that in Polish dub they share most of the voice actors definitely helped this matter (Rarity for example voices Marlene). And thus I finally decided to share with the rest of the world question that had been flowing in my mind ever since I watched both shows - do you think that Kowalski and Twilight would had developed Hate at First Sight? Like, (after he had to come to terms with the fact that magic really exist) Kowalski would believe that science is more powerful and better than magic, while Twilight would hate Kowalski for his Insufferable Genius tendencies (not mentioning that he could remind her of her's Season 1 jerkish personality). But what do you think?

[up][up]Centaurworld was made in Flash. That's how far things have come in the decade since FIM S1 it was a surprise to find out.

As for The Movie's art style, if it's better or worse is subjective, but let's see how it effected the final product.

  • Better action: The action part was divisive, with even defenders feeling it didn't do anything the show hadn't done better.
  • Better expressions: As comedy it became devise in subsequent seasons, as drama the the falling out between Twilight and her friends that their expressions added weight to were divisive enough I don't know how much difference it made.
  • Appeal to wider audiences: It still fared poorly with non fans as offering nothing to appeal unless you were already a fan.

Besides failing to offset the writing issues, I think the at hurt by delaying the product past FIM's peak popularity and past when it came off as basic/cliche and lacked the continuity that kept the current fandom going.

Equestria Girls used the shows animation and had a more successful theatric run (the sequel also getting one, successfully establishing a long running spinoff).

[up][up]I thought the 2017 movie was still successful. Like 61.3 million on a 6 million budget is pretty good. Sure it ain't Disney numbers, but far from a failure.

Wonder how it fares compared to other animated movies based on shows like the Sponge Bob movies, Rugrats trilogy, Wild Thornberrys Movie, Recess School's Out, Hey Arnold the Movie, Teacher's Pet 2004, Doug's 1st Movie, Transformers the Movie, The Powerpuff Girls Movie, Teen Titans Go to the Movies, and SCOOB.

It was a failure in the sense that it didn't break through to the mainstream, which is what I think they were hoping for.

When it came to "God Of-" type entities, correct, I felt that no longer applied to any similar flesh-and-blood creatures like Celestia and Luna. They felt more like creatures on par with Hercules than Zeus, while their quote-unquote "portfolios" were nothing of the sort, no more than Pinkie Pie's portfolio was parties.

Instead, spirit creatures like Discord became the new Hellenistic god-like entities in my head, a specific "God Of-" deal, except it would be listed as "Spirit Of-"

OTOH, one of the big fanfics, Pony POV iirc, tried to put Discord's ilk and the Celestial Sisters' as equal but opposite creatures of evil chaos and goodly order respectively. Not that I cared for but it wasn't my story.

I mean, that's just how discussions work. Not every point and statement is going to get followed up on.

Yeah, there does broadly seem to be a split between special "A plus" members of regular species and unique, ancient, really powerful beings and spirits.

I had a vague half-concept that I never ended up doing much with of encoding that as a split between "paragons", sort of superlative magical members of mortal species, and "primodials", ancient spirits and godlike monsters, but I never took that out of the basic concept stage.

OTOH, one of the big fanfics, Pony POV iirc, tried to put Discord's ilk and the Celestial Sisters' as equal but opposite creatures of evil chaos and goodly order respectively. Not that I cared for but it wasn't my story.

Hmm. Pony POV is kind of a mirror for the evolution of the "god" concept in the fandom, insofar as it started out as a rather major fandom juggernaut fanfic early on, but then gradually lost engagement and interest as it kept going on.

[up] Me talking on this discussion about Gaia Everfree has probably became a Running Gag. So as we speak now about potential "gods" of MLP-verse, do you guys think that deers from Cervyderia could see Equestrian!Gaia Everfree from my theory about her as their deity, similar to how ponies in fandom see Lauren Faust ponysona as theirs? Given that Gaia is basically more powerful and mystical version of their Prince Vernalis, due to sharing the same Green Thumb powers. Also, are there here any other fans of The Penguins of Madagascar, since I still want someone to answer my post.

[up]Since you're bringing up Dream Works stuff in this, I'm gonna ask this: what do you think Sunset would think of Kung Fu Panda? Especially the stuff with Tai Lung and Shifu, considering how it could remind her of her own fallout with Celestia.

[up] I actually have in mind fanfic inspired by All in One Watching their movies and reactions, where both Kung Fu Panda and Friendship Is Magic will appear. And I imagine that both Sunset and Celestia will be crying during the scene where Tai Lung fights with Shifu, especially during the infamous "tell me you're proud of me, master" scene. As for movie in general, I will answer when I will watch the fourth movie, and after that I will read rewrite of it, since I already saw reviews and leaks (I'm still peeved that they wasted Lord Shen character).

And since we are talking about Dreamworks, I'm still waiting for someone to answer my Penguins of Madagascar post.

Please don't bump your posts, people already nicely told you not to do that. You can't force a conversation. I've never seen the Penguins show so I have no opinion on it.

So, Ninja275 recently uploaded how he imagines Human!Sandbar in Equestria Girls: Sonic the Hedgehog, and I must say, his idea that Sandbar sometimes feels like he's not special compared to his friends and has nothing new to provide to the table, showing that he has an inferiority complex is very cool and redeems Sandbar as character in my eyes, since I see him as underdeveloped Generic Guy. Even before I saw his theory today, I headcanoned Sandbar being this type of guy doesn't think things through to give him more depths as character, and possibly learning a lesson from his best pal Gallus. But what do you think of this?

Also, thanks to the fact that I'm now listening to "Party! Party! Party!" from Madagascar 2 I realised that Gallus and Sandbar friendship is similar to Alex and Marty friendship - both of them are friends despite the fact that one of them is prey of the other (since griffons have been portrayed in mythology as horse-eaters), Alex is a lion while Gallus is half-lion while both Marty and Sandbar are laidback, Totally Radical equine dudes (I'm writing this like that, because Polish dub removed all Jive Turkey aspects of Marty and replaced them with international Totally Radical dude mannerism). I now have in mind a idea for a Madagascar 1 inspired fic where Gallus (probably thanks to some brainwashing spell or potion) goes savage and wants to eat Sandbar, and later feels regret of what he wanted to do it. But what do you think of that?

So, what would've happened if Twilight didn't tell the Rainbooms to look after Sunset at the end of the first Equestria Girls movie? Would the Rainbooms have still tried to help Sunset or would they have hated her like the rest of the school did? If it was the latter, how would the events of Rainbow Rocks go?

[up] I don't see that happening since Sunset could relapse back again. Otherwise Twilight might've dragged Sunset back to Equestria. That would definitely change the trajectory of both series.

Scar himself looks like foreign, weak, and with very female moves.

I just figured beings like the Sisters are of this world, material beings of flesh and blood, that just so happen to be ageless and nigh-unkillable.

Entities like Discord are of some nebulous Other World, some kind of spirit world or aether. Which we end up seeing! But I figured on that long before that, Discord always seemed to be a creature of spirit rather than flesh.

(In the Triptych Continuum, the Sisters say that for him "flesh and form is a choice")
