2000 POTD statextravaganza time!

I finally finished calculating the stats. It took longer than I expected. I also discovered some cools things I had forgotten along the way.

For April Fool's Day 2013, I did a fake POTD quoting a post from the future (specifically, it linked to post #400001 on page 16001). Unfortunately, the thread got nuked around page 15915, so the future POTD never came to be. I decided to treat it as if it instead chose the first post on page 87 of the new thread, which is approximately what it would have been had there been no nuking. So congrats to Marcen for winning the April Fools day bonus POTD.

Anyway, here are the counts for POT Ds chosen from the old and new thread. It was more lopsided than I expected (for reference, the old thread currently makes up about two thirds of the total), but that makes sense since the POT Ds have been happening over a long period of time so the early posts have many more chances to have been chosen. Therefore, there are more POT Ds from the old thread than you'd expect based on their current percentage.

Old thread: 1653 82.65%
New thread: 347 17.35%
I was going to do a breakdown of POT Ds by year, but every single POTD chosen so far has been from the first three years of the thread. Which is again not surprising, but I expected there would be at least one or two more recent POT Ds just by random chance.

Also consider this theory about the books. Daring started playing down the cerebral aspects of the adventures and played up the action because that sells better.

Or because she just liked those parts better.

I mentioned this in my "Daring Done?" liveblog, but the very nature of the Daring Do books is inherently narcissistic. It takes a special type of egotist to compose your autobiography as a work of fantasy. There are a few reasons to do that and none of them really give a good impression as to the veracity of her stories.

The chief reason to do that is to have leeway to embellish to your heart's desire. Turn an encounter with three ponies into a dozen, make Ahuizotl three times larger, rewrite all the conversations so that you were super-cool and always said that thing you wish you'd said five minutes later, etc. Writing her story as a work of fiction means that even though she's recounting real things that happened to her, she's under no obligation to present those events accurately.

Like, we can assume Rainbow Dash probably gets to be awesome in the books where she costars because Daring Do likes her, but there's a real possibility that Quibble Pants is now in one of her books as a dim-witted kid sidekick who was totally useless and only existed to get captured seven times. She can write that because it's fiction.

Thus, because she is not writing an autobiography but instead composing Historical Fiction about herself, it is entirely possible that Daring Do chose to embellish in different ways after her books caught on.

It would be pretty similar, except that early posts in the thread are weighted more heavily. For example, I have more posts than gingjerninja now, but he has a lot more POT Ds, since his posts are all early in the thread. One idea I had is to compare how many POT Ds each person had with how many chances they had to be selected (i.e. count each post a number of times equal to the number of POT Ds that appeared after it).

Those are really interesting stats.
