How about just using[=[emoticon]=]?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThat would work for general examples, but if you wanted to give a comparison with specific markup so all of it shows the markup only and the result of it, it would be more useful in helping users with markup.
Like this:
[[labelnote:[emoticon] ]]TEXTHERE[[/labelnote]]
But if I wanted to give an example of it in action it would not work.
[emoticon]
[[labelnote: ]]TEXTHERE[[/labelnote]]

Emoticons just don't work when creating new threads. Typing [emoticon] by hand will just display [emoticon] until you edit the OP, and this is the case whether or not it's been [=escaped=].

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going. If escaping a whole markup item doesn't work, escaping the [[ and ]] is the next step.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman...hmm. I haven't thought of that.
Still, is there a reason why escaping markup does not work for emoticons?
Bump; is this still a problem?
I am half minded to recommend WONTFIX on the escaping issue, or to lump it into a more general topic.
The emoticon issue still exists.

Markup escape does not work in emoticons. Even using [=[emoticon]=] will show the emoticon. This only seems to happen when a post has the emoticon bar on top of the text box. When creating a new thread with escaping markup, it works, but not in later posts or if the post is edited.
Speaking of which, there is no emoticons bar when creating a new thread. I This is less important than the other request, but it is something that I noticed.
