I actually hadn't thought about it till that article, but there really aren't any "Strong male leads" Shantae. Not that I'm demanding it or anything, I'm thankful to have strong, well written female leads, but I never notice that there isn't any males in the Shantae universe that aren't idiots or some sort of monster.
My Tumblr "If theirs one thing I'm good at, it's blowing" Jesse Cox 2013What about Uncle Mimic?
Or good ol' sardonic guy in challenge tower?
Forever liveblogging the AvengersApparently good at fighting, though.
I guess there's Abner, too.
I have a message from another time...Abner might fall under the "monster" header, being a zombie and all.
Well, and Shantae's half-genie. Rotty and co. retain human intelligence thanks to the magic of coffee.
I have a message from another time...Squid Baron is a pretty okay guy after your initial fight.
But as he's self-admittedly probably going to be demoted, you really are more or less stuck with Bolo and Mimic in terms of main characters.
At least Barracuda Joe is kind of cool?
I don't mind the males being morons, it isn't like the females are much better considering Shantae got trapped in a bath tub she didn't own.
"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeAnd then the Cacklebat waits patiently for her to get dressed before fighting.
I have a message from another time...Everyone's a bit silly in that universe.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectDarn it, Hypno Baron.
First Ammo Baron becomes a heel for no apparent reason, and now you.
You broke into his house and stole his shit.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersHe was trying to tell you not to do a thing.
Granted he wasn't very specific.
"Hey this lamp will either kill you or take your powers away, don't use it" would have been nice.
Shantae seems to be incapable of not collecting dangerous things and turning them over to villains in hostage situations.
Granted, that saves the world once, but...
I have a message from another time...While still waiting for HGH news, here's some more awesome Shantae fanwork.
I decided to give the original Shantae another shot since I kind of gave up on it my last time playing.
So far...Eh. It doesn't do much for me beyond some frustration. The graphics look great for the time and the animation looks super smooth. The music is alright, I haven't been paying much attention to it. I'm still having the same problems with it that I had before. Which is pretty much the gameplay of it. I find the game pretty frustrating most of the time. The hair whip attack sucks and the moving around feels weird to me. I don't know how to describe it, maybe it's stiff or clunky. What ever it is, I have problems with it. The monkey transformation is pretty sucky, too. If only because it leaves you completely vulnerable to attacks.
Maybe the game gets more fun later on with the other transformations, but so far I kind of understand at least one reason why this game didn't get much attention (Besides, of course, it coming late in the GB and GBC's life span and it getting little to no advertising).
Maybe the sequels are better. Hopefully at least Half Genie Hero will be.
My Tumblr "If theirs one thing I'm good at, it's blowing" Jesse Cox 2013Both of the sequels are much better. The first game isn't a good representation of what you should expect from later games (Pirate's Curse being almost perfect).
"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeI would think the sequels would improve. Or at least I'd hope they would.
I have heard they're shorter, which I don't know could be a bad or good thing. Way Forward seems to have a lot of good platformers that aren't too long(Migthy Switch Force 1 and 2, Ducktales Remastered, Adventure Time:Hey Ice King, and Batman Brave and the Bold for some examples).
My Tumblr "If theirs one thing I'm good at, it's blowing" Jesse Cox 2013Risky's Revenge is really short: completely beatable in just a couple hours.
Pirate's Curse is closer to 10 hours of gameplay.
Either way, both games are fantastic.
"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeJeez louise, they consider that to define a pre-alpha?
I guess we know where Shovel Knight got its "beta" phase philosophy from...
Also, snake tits.
Interesting idea for an enemy
Forever liveblogging the AvengersMore like an NPC, seemingly.
What exactly was their beta philosophy? Is it a good thing? Being able to play the whole game sounds like a good thing.

Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectThe game was more-or-less what many would consider "complete" but they did not consider it such.
Sort if like a game on Early Access could qualify for being a complete, ready-for-market one.
So I just got Risky's Revenge and The Pirate Curse from Steam, they kinda ended sidelined by Undertale but I do plan on playing them more when I can
The little I played seems to be pretty fun though.
