Well, that's good then. I was about to lose hope. Must've been a troll or misinformation.

Confirmed Misinformation. It has now be clarified that it's not being delayed.

At least there's some good news.

Even so, I can't help but be unsurprised by this game's development. Inafune has done a lot of stuff that has made me lose respect for him over the years (constant badmouthing Japanese developers, leading Capcom to over-Westernize their games, etc.), and it just seems like this stuff was to be expected after all. Shame too, considering how promising the game looked.

Also, this image says a lot of what I have to say in terms of the budget.

[up]Maybe it's just me but I don't really have an issue with how MN 9 looks.

Game Informer's Mike Futter (the writer of the article stating the delay), on news of the delay being a mistake: "So, "Nick" didn't post himself. Someone claims he did? Ok." They have yet to print a retraction, evidently because they wont take this guy's word for it while Gamestop still says 2016. That said, it's probably not delayed, because a denial like that when it's actually happening would burn the community down.

[up][up][up]That image comes off as unfair to me. It's comparing games with different art styles to each other, something that doesn't really need high budgets or powerful tech to pull off. It does not convey how the games look in motion or other details, which is a key point. For example, Skullgirls has gorgeous character sprites and animation, yes, but if you look at the backgrounds, they're pretty simple and limited, (Even if I do like them) and there's only so many characters. The budget does not correlate to how good the graphics are at all.

A corpse should be left well enough alone...

Why do most people care about art style in games anyway? I wouldn't be surprised if a hyper-realistic game came out and it's buggy as all hell but people still love it only because of the graphics. ("10/10 game of the year" award, "Beautiful graphics" etc)

Budget isn't only for graphics.

Because in a visual medium like video games graphics are important?

You know, I wonder if the problems we are seeing from Inafune is because of Protection from Editors.

Makes me wonder how Mega Man would be if Inafune had complete control over the series from day one.

So not all bad.

[up][up][up]There are some games that are like stickmen or pixels or designed to be like how a five-year old kid draws. Some get hate for graphics alone anyway even though they're supposed to be like that...

you realize that art style and fidelity are different things right? there are plenty of "hyper-realistic" games that are pretty lame in terms of art direction. it doesn't necessarily have to do with money anyway, since plenty of lower budget games can have nice aesthetics through clever use of assets or just having a good aesthetic (like persona 3/4).

art direction is part of what gives a game context, i.e provide a reason for why you are doing activity xyz. gameplay ideas need context in order to be compelling otherwise they're just mechanical concepts in a vacuum.

well yeah some games are fine as just shapes in a vacuum or whatever, but that doesn't work for every game.

[up][up][up]Oh, it's just that most people I seen focus on graphics more than anything else. Like "ugh its too kiddy/bland/boring/whatever".

But thanks for teaching me about that.

Pictures are meant to be pretty.

Art in videogames should be meant to express adequately what a character is, what he is doing and where he is in a story and/or gameplay context.

But if you want to do it for the art, go ahead.

Super Hexagon has a great aesthetic, the constantly shifting colors thing that was also in VVVVVV. It even changes what kind of colors it shifts through between difficulties to give them all a different feel. Related: the music in that game owns bones and they give the different difficulties different feels as well.

There isn't a transparent (as in, anything from the background would get in the way.) picture of Call in colour but let me see what I can do.

EDIT: I don't have any fancy programs to make this transparent so go crazy.

Does anyone know when we're getting a demo for this game?

Probably near or on the release date, as a "try-before-you-buy" thing.

EDIT: Transparent art of Ray is released... Not even her leg is safe from the body horror, it's split in half/deteriorating and exposing the parts underneath.

That's what happens when you announce two other projects without finishing the one you started I guess tongue. We already have enough games coming out in the next months to keep me busy so the wait better be worth it (or I can just use Steam Refunds if I'm not impressed as I never backed the projects).

So not only has MN 9 been delayed, they waited to formally announce it AFTER Red Ash's Kickstarter failed.

https://www.google.com/search?site=&source=hp&q=mighty+no+9+delayed

"We have an important announcement to share with our backers.

Although we understand that everyone was looking forward to playing Mighty No. 9 as soon as possible, a release delay is going to be announced for the game at Gamescom 2015, which is currently being held in Cologne, Germany.

This is a project that would not have existed without the support of our backers, so we at least wanted to deliver this news to our backers before it is officially announced.

We are unable to confirm a final release date at this time, however we will be aiming for a release in Q1 2016. Once a solid release date is set, we will announce it immediately to our backers and fans.

Of course, it is important to explain why exactly the game is being delayed. As we have communicated in the updates to our backers, all of the core content for the game is developed and in a complete state.

However, there are still bugs and issues pertaining to the online features that are included in the game. These bugs and issues have a direct affect on enjoyment of the game, so a decision was made to work these issues out before release.

Currently, comcept and their partners are working at full capacity to resolve these issues and fix any remaining bugs.

In addition, we have received quite a few requests for additional information regarding the various platforms that are part of the platform survey we have sent out.

We have also only managed to receive around half of the total responses needed for the survey.

Considering the fact that the game’s release has been delayed, we are planning to open another platform survey once a final release date has been settled upon.

We will continue to deliver the most up-to-date info to our backers and fans through our forum updates, so please keep an eye out!

We appreciate your support and patience regarding this matter, and look forward to delivering Mighty No. 9 to our backers and fans in the best state possible."

While the delay is annoying, I think they made it so much worse by the fact that they tried denying it when it was leaked via GameStop that the game was being delayed until next year.

I might not know exactly what my donation was spent on, but I know for a fact that it wasn't spent on a PR person.
