And now the Spanish border guards have apparently opened a diplomatic bag. If it's true than they've gone right ahead and breached the Vienna Convention and one of the most basic rules of international diplomacy. [1]

"Yup. That tasted purple."The problem with Utrecht, in a nutshell, is that the area that Gibraltar covers has expanded since the treaty was written, and that effectively makes everything not explicitly in the treaty contested territory. Territories naturally shift over time for one reason or another, and these treaties will naturally become partially or wholly outdated eventually.
Now the breach of the Vienna Convetion is something Spain are going to have a very difficult time defending. "But we say Gibraltar is ours therefore international law is irrelevant" is hardly a strong defence.
My name is Addy. Please call me that instead of my username.Even if the embassy is in your own territory and the bag hasn't left it yet, it's still a breach of international law.
"Yup. That tasted purple."I believe the Spanish claims re: Utrecht is that it was basically forced onto them at gunpoint so it doesn't count.
Ceuta and Millela were of course willingly given by Morocco...
Schild und Schwert der ParteiTreaties only apply so long as they benefit the party in question.
"Yup. That tasted purple."Ceuta in particular is a perfect analogy and I really don't get why our Government aren't using it more. The BBC have commented on that plenty, but it remains an obscure comparison except among those who have really studied this whole mess, it seems. It applies to the other three territories as well, I think, but Ceuta is the best example of the five as it's most directly comparable.

Trump delenda est
Actually... Utrecht wasn't as clear as it could have been. <_< Hence, the problem. -_-
