I found some info on the lawyer, who was previously arrested by the police for riling up Ankara when he insisted that the PKK shouldn't be called terrorists.

Although the said victim did advocate for a peaceful solution to the PKK conflict.

They were also linked to the NATO stay-behind armies during the Cold War. I think it was called Counter-Guerilla in Turkey.

The Istanbul district mayor has said that 5 people have been injured following a pipe bomb detonation on an overpass near an Istanbul metro station.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot

An important thing to note, of course, is that the article also lays part of the blame on Western governments' and media outlets' feet.

It goes without saying that American and European foreign policy is far from blameless in the mayhem that is now the Middle East, a mayhem that is fueling recruitment and motivation for terrorism. Nor are Western media, including in the United States, innocent of hateful speech that could incite violence against Arabs, Muslims, other minorities and immigrants in general.

EDIT: Ugh, can't believe I bungled up my attempt at reordering that sentence. Fixing.

[up][up]Not surprising at all.

Its much easier to blame the evil west for their short comings then themselves.

To them we might as well be working with the Legion of Doom.

[up][up] The US media apart from PBS, is not state run. If countries want to have government owned and controlled media, their governments should be held responsible for the content of said media.

And even PBS is not directly controlled by the government. If anything they're one of the most neutral outlets.

Boko Haram has killed more people in Nigeria than Daesh has across multiple countries: http://www.vocativ.com/news/252947/boko-haram-are-worse-than-isis/

Just days after ISIS killed 43 people in Beirut and 129 people in Paris, two bombings believed to be linked to Boko Haram claimed at least 49 lives and injured approximately 130 people in two separate Nigerian cities on Tuesday. While they didn’t grab global headlines, they’re part of an even more deadly problem than that posed by ISIS’ Middle-Eastern core. Even as we published this story, it remained unclear whether or not the attack on the Radisson Blu Hotel in Mali’s capital, Bamako, was undertaken by Boko Haram or Ansar Al-Din

The Institute for Economics and Peaces’ new Global Terrorism Index shows that the Nigerian terrorist group eclipsed ISIS for the morbid title of most deadly terrorist group in 2014, killing 6,644 people in various attacks throughout Nigeria, Chad, and Cameroon. Together, the two groups (which declared an alliance in March) accounted for more than half of all deaths caused by terrorism last year.

Okay, with the new info coming in about the San Bernadino mass shooting (the male shooter was in contact with suspected international terrorists, indicating possible radicalization), discussion about it can now be more or less filed here.

So...thoughts? How do you think things will go from here?

Muslim groups are denouncing the shooting. Sadly, I don't think it'll be enough for the bigots out there who assume all Muslims are violent psychopaths.

Well, the nature of the contact has not been released. One of the family members of the people shot were interviewed and apparently said something baout one of the hsot people being stranged that that guy was the suspected shooter, since they were "congratulating him on his new baby"

At this point, anything can happen. Also San Bernardino was not part of ISIS's "hit list" though the hit list was prolly just the number of cities they could find from stolen passports. They were more likely working with what they got.

And if they found the means of contact, that is going to shut down a venue for ISIS if anything.

If ISIS has an infinite number of people, yes. But since their contact was one specific person, they can just get that one.

One thing that worries me is that the attack on revelation of the shooters' identity and motives comes soon after Donald Trump stating that to take down ISIS we need to "take out their families."*

Those are dots I really don't want to see get connected...

  • That link is to a Fox News article about Trump saying that, since I was looking for an article to make the point that not even someone with an interest in doing so could/would whitewash that.

Fox News and Trump have been at odds for a while though. Breitbart or the like are more likely to gloss over it.

This does not seem to be a case of the shooter being mentally ill or having a criminal history... the person graduated from California State University, San Bernardino (same city where this happened) and was employed at the county health department. This is increasingly looking like a terrorist-related attack.

Alternatively, the guy attacked somewhere he knew too well, as opposed to terrorists who choose targets where they can do the most harm.

Sounds more personal than terrorist-y to me, from that perspective.

Its a safe bet to say its a terrorist attack. A disgruntled worker doesn't really stockpile pipe bombs, weapons, and body armor.
