I think the only true JRPG sub-boss challenges I've cleared are the Golden Sun ones (Deadbeard and Dullahan) and the Final Fantasy I GBA-remake bonus dungeon bosses. I usually don't go for bonus bosses, because they tend to be hair-pullingly difficult without being worth it, and I want to move on to the next game once I'm done with the final boss.
Join us in our quest to play all RPG video games! Moving on to disc 2 of Grandia!Ah, Ethereal Queen and Gabriel Celeste. They appear in every Tri Ace game, always accompanied by "The Incarnation of the Devil". Favourite battle theme ever.
I've done all of Star Ocean's bonus bosses except for 4's Ethereal Queen, since I didn't manage to get that far. She was a joke in 3, but in 4 she's deadly.
As for the toughest JRPG boss....well, the honour goes to this guy. Not even cheapass bosses have managed to surpass him.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerYep, that's the hardest JRPG bonus boss. You can have all your characters completely maxed out and it's still a luck-based mission. Not because he's cheap, but because he's just that strong.
The only game where I actually went around beating all the bonus bosses was Xenosaga Episode III where Erde Kaiser Sigma had an inexplicable southern accent. And it yelled "Erde Kaiser" in that accent all the time.
Not Three Laws compliant.I was intending on fighting the Demi-Fiend once I beat Digital Devil Saga for the first time.
Any hints?
"Please crush me with your heels Esdeath-sama!a bit... Harder than Ruby Weapon, given the restrictions THAT fight lumbers you with?
Well, it definitely does depend on your luck....
Aside from abusing the revival orb, maxing character stats and not going in with any null/block/drain skills, no two strategies can give you the same advice. I found that a set of standard caprine sacrifices and 12-hour prayer cycle was sufficient to turn fate in my favour.

...x4 Erde Kaiser Sigma's voice is amazing. I could listen to it all day. It also had a sweet unique battle theme.
I just beat it with Blood Dancer + Dark Eder Kaiser spam. I guess I cheesed it but...eh, I won! All that mattered to me.
Xenosaga III is a pretty easy game though.

I've heard much toting of Nie R's story and soundtrack.
On the other hand, I just had a guy recommend it to me in the same breath as the Compilation of FFVII and the Lightning Trilogy. As in, it is as good a story as both of them.
I'm worried.
Nier and the XIII trilogy possess as much common ground as, say, Vagrant Story and Mystic Quest.

...One of those is not a convoluted irrepairable mess.
I'll let you guess which.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerIt probably won't happen but it takes like ten seconds to sign.

Have you tried TinyURL?

Nie R is nothing like either of those. it's also (imo) the best written jrpg in the last several years, in part due to arguably the best localization i've seen outside of final fantasy xii, which included one of the greatest dubs ever.
also that soundtrack is POWERFUL.
so yeah, it's probably my favorite rpg this gen outside of dark souls. the gameplay is subpar and the game is rough but it has a lot of heart and interesting things going on for it. would recommend.

I've never used the site before... Does this work for you? http://tinyurl.com/lknaom2
Yes I still need to get Nie R. Got distracted with playing the Chrono games for teh first time ever.
Yep, that did it.
Nie R is definitely on my wishlist. Initially I wasn't sure it'd be my kind of game, but I figure I won't know unless I try it.
it's a bit of a polarizing title, admittedly. i love taro yoko's distinct brand of grimdark batshit insanity and i think he has brilliant ideas when it comes to deconstructions and subversions of JRPG and anime tropes, so nier was amazing to me even as i recognized its glaring flaws.
I guess I could ask for Nie R for Christmas since my girlfriend missed my birthday.
Also PS4 JRPG. Might get a PS 4 now.
Maybe.
I'm kinda nervous though... NISA does good localization and dubs but this is Idea Factory International. I looked at Idea Factory's thing on Wiki when I first saw this article and it listed Chaos Wars I believe. CW is like THE example of godawful video game voice-acting.
I don't know if its localization was handled by IDI though Does anyone know if they're any good?

Idea Factory International has only been active for about a year. The company that translated Chaos Wars never really did anything else, and it was certainly years later when Idea Factory titles could be considered successes in North America.
Not Three Laws compliant.Hm, fair enough then. Thanks for the info.
Oh boy, now this is something I can look forward to on the PS 4.
Being super nostalgic because Level5 got me into JRP Gs, I want something like a new Dark Cloud game, but I might as well wish for Valkyrie Profile 3 first. Ni No Kuni 2 seems like a no-brainer right now.
"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerLegit Valkyrie Profile 3 Hrist would be amazing but tbh i'd expect it to be on 3ds or as a downloadable game rather than a big budget HD title.
Emerald Weapon and Ruby Weapon in Final Fantasy VII were the hardest Jurpeger bosses I managed to beat. Given the various and different strategies I had to use to take their heads for my virtual collection.
