Wikipedia, and dozens of other wikis get really mad if you upload an image that isn't meant to go with an article. What's the policy on this wiki?

See How to Pick a Good Image.

TV Tropes is not meant as a image hosting site; the uploader is strictly for use on the wiki and forums. There is a script that periodically purges uploaded images that have no links from anywhere in the tvtropes.org site.

How To Pick A Good Image only applied to the wiki, but what you said makes more sense. Thank you.

To clarify, you may upload images for the purpose of hotlinking them in the forums, but we ask that you embed no more than one image per post (in addition to your avatar, of course). If you need to link to an image larger than the uploader permits, use an external link within a pothole.

Tangentially related, but when an image url is posted, could it just show the URL? Is there a way to just show the link to an image?

Enclosing it directly in [[brackets]] will force the image link to be shown like this: [1] There isn't a way to show the full clickable URL, but you can remove the http:// bit or do something similar to show all that matters of it, like this: static.tvtropes.org/swag/IceArrow4352_7221.png

Using the comment out code should make the url appear rather then the image if you are talking about a URL image hosted by tropes. If you are talking about a linked image from another site just copy pasting the should do it. Well I take that back that depends on on the nature of the link.

For example I refreshing myself on the Bikini Island tests. I want to share the image of the Castle Bravo test.

Commented out.

I had written a small tutorial that I had partially created but never finished uploading.

Does the OP have any other questions about the Image Uploader?

I beg to disagree. [[URL URL]] does what you want:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_S8KQwRveg to use an example.

as another example.

(I guess it doesn't work with image files, since it tries to hotlink them. I thought it would work that way, but I guess that's a failure of using the same syntax for hotlinks and for potholes. It's not like BB Code where there's a [img] tag and a separate [url] tag. That's what I get for thinking I know how the code works on limited simulation without testing it more thoroughly.

It's partly also that the parser in our wiki software is a bit ... "special".
