Needs Help (New Crowner 8/18/13): Stop Helping Me

Short isn't a bad thing. As long as the description lays out the whole trope, it can be short. Give it time and eventually it will bloat into a behemoth naturally.

Killed the Clippy mention in the sandbox's main description because it wasn't necessary. It's super short, but I think it's fine.

The problem is that multiple entries are talking about parodies of Clippy, and without the context in the description there would be a lot of repetition to explain in each entry what the work is parodying.

I didn't realize this, I just saw what appeared to be an extraneous paragraph and killed it. Sorry about that.

Sandbox.Stop Helping Me, I think so.

Not so sure on Sandbox.Annoying Videogame Helper, though. For starters, the description seems obnoxiously long, even without comparing it to the non-YMMV take on the trope for SHM. About to crash out, though, so I'll look closer at it later, if no one else gets around to it.

That cut of Example as a Thesis in the description was definitely a good start. I'm off work tomorrow, so I'll look into cleaning up the examples in a bit.

Editing offline, I've come upon an issue for Sandbox.Annoying Video Game Helper.

Especially with games that have multiplayer, there's quite a bit of talk about the various ways the other players can screw you over. Should those be removed, as they're not the game providing (non)assistance? Other players aren't mentioned in the trope description, but the actions of other players can provide the same annoyance as the AI "helpers".

Remove the player stuff. It should be restricted to the computer.

That's my thinking, too, but I wanted to get other opinions.

Also, I take back my comment that Sandbox.Stop Helping Me is ready to launch. Going through the AVGH example list offline, I'm still running into stuff that belongs in SHM.

Ugh, there's a lot of stuff to work through in AVGH...

Up to the Third Person Shooter folder, where I'm taking a break because all this flipping between TVT and the text editor where I'm doing the offline editing is getting tiresome.

Ok, finally got done with the cleanup of Sandbox.Annoying Video Game Helper.

If anyone wants to double-check my work (and I'd appreciate it, but it's not a minor task), I saved the examples from the original version at Sandbox.Annoying Video Game Helper Old (didn't edit the description any, other than adding the pointer to Stop Helping Me for In-Universe examples).

[edit] General summary:

• Removed Natter and Word Cruft
• Fixed Example Indentation, grouping games by series where appropriate (though still using the inaccurate Franchise namespaced stuff in a few places, because fixing that problem is beyond the scope of this thread).
• Deleted non-examples, moving any that would fit Stop Helping Me to that page's sandbox.

I don't feel particularly comfortable doing the kind of thing that annoys me when others do it, but I want to wrap this up soon (and not "Soon^(tm)") to clear it out of the TRS queue.

Looks fine to me as well.

Assuming that after I let it brew for another day to be sure there's no objections nothing deal-breaking is brought up, I'm going to have to look up how to launch a page without going through YKTTW, it's been so long...

Anyway, tomorrow lunch-ish if there's no further issues spotted I'll swap in the sandbox for Stop Helping Me, and launch Annoying Video Game Helper using the sandbox page's contents.

And then the fun starts to switch shit around to make work page entries match the trope page.

Ok, re-reading the entire thread, I'm left puzzled.

Stop Helping Me, the current page, is to be split into an in-universe page that's not YMMV, and a YMMV page about player-annoying stuff titled Annoying Video Game Helper. That much I'm clear on.

But is SHM supposed to be staying as the non-YMMV one, or is Unwanted Assistance to be used with SHM going away entirely, or what?

Anyway, since Annoying Video Game Helper seems to be ok, I've launched a YKTTW for it here, since apparently now you can't make a trope without running it through there, regardless of whether or not it's been banged out elsewhere (like, say, in a TRS thread ).

On further thought, since there's still uncertainty about the non-YMMV one, which is to be referenced by AVGH, I discarded that YKTTW until everything's ready to go.

This is never going to be done barring unilateral action on my part (which is, of course, A Bad Thing^(tm)), is it...?

Shouldn't the YMMV tag be lifted ASAP to avoid more damage of users moving objective examples off the main pages?

Not until the YMMV and non-YMMV pages are both launched... which is still waiting on a response to my request for clarification regarding which wiki page is supposed to have the non-YMMV version.

I really want to get this shit knocked out, but not without being clear on the Stop Helping Me/Unwanted Assistance issue I mentioned in post #170.

It's pretty clear that Unwanted Assistance covers all in-universe examples. Hell, Stop Helping Me is in the page quote.

Annoying Video Game Helper would be the YMMV for "irritating and intrusive tutorial."
