Discussion thread. Roleplay thread.

The year is 2020. Earth is going through a somewhat rough patch. Countries are still recovering from the 2017 economic crisis, wars are still raging on the Middle East and other areas of the world, and things are pretty much exactly the same as they were in 2013. In the US, NASA has finally landed a man on Mars, an achievement welcomed by the world's scientific and online communities with delight. As the world celebrates over finally having landing on another planet, a discovery in the red planet shakes up everything: the astronauts send back pictures of an unusual metallic box, followed by what look like destroyed robots... and then an entire city, still operating, but completely empty.

The rough patch just got rougher: with the revelation that mankind isn't alone on Earth, suddenly, everything starts going downhill. Some are jumping with joy, yelling "I told you so" to everyone on the street, while others are hiding inside their houses, scared that they'll be invaded by aliens, just like in the movies. But... nothing happens. That is, until the astronauts return with pictures, videos and the small metallic box. The US government discovers the metallic box is actually a power source, an alien battery, and their jaws drop to the floor when they discover that the small little box can produce enough energy to power the entire country for 2000 years.

Suddenly, everyone wants to get to Mars. The US tries to keep this information hidden, but whistleblowers and spies lead to the beginning of another space race. Everyone wants a piece of that technology, and scientists are predicting the end of mankind. But instead of that happening... the governments actually decide to unite and use this technology to create a better future for their people. Under the lead of the US and China, the world's governments create an organisation, the Earth Alliance, which starts overseeing the analysis of the alien tech...

Two years later, technology has taken a huge 200 year leap. Medicine has gotten rid of the worse diseases in human history with new methods that allow them to eliminate even the most hard-to-find diseases. Transportation is easy and available to everyone through hover cars, public bus lines that soar through the skies, airplanes that travel from one side of the planet to the other in less than four hours. The Earth Alliance is leading the world's governments, having sucessfully replicated the technology they found in Mars and handed them out to countries that need them and countries that can use them without that technology getting out of hand. But not everybody is happy. Extremist groups are angry at how borders are slowly disappearing and all power is going to the Earth Alliance, and nationalist groups want their countries to take over other countries to get all the alien tech for themselves. Major worldwide gangs get a hold of the alien tech, upgrading their weapons, and certain areas of the Earth are still warzones.

Things change once more after aliens start visiting Earth. At first, Earth has a strict "temporary visit only" policy, where aliens can't stay in the planet for more than a few days. But slowly, the walls holding the aliens back disappear, and all these alien species start to mingle and befriend the humans, revealing that they have been watching since the beginning, and now that the Earth is sufficiently advanced in terms of their technology, they can begin having formal alliances. Humans and aliens chat, mingle, and, of course, breed.

Five years later, a new generation of humans start displaying supernatural powers, the result of aliens mating with humans. Some of them can control the elements, some can use their minds to perform wonderful acts, and the Earth Alliance decides it's time to do something about it before the extremists do that- and it creates the Special Intelligence Bureau, a group designed to collect these new humans, train them and find out how these new abilities can be used. With a new generation of humans appearing, extremist, nationalist and xenophobic groups gain even more strength, with one group taking over the entirety of the Middle East.

Seven years later, in 2034, all the tension building up between the Earth Alliance and the extremist groups finally blows up into an all-out war. At first, it's only the Earth Alliance's troops versus the extremist group's troops, but nationalist politicians lead to the biggest powers breaking out of the Earth Alliance to fight against the troops in order to get full control of the alien tech. The war continues on and on for five years, with entire areas of the world getting ravaged by the war. The first generation of superpowered humans under the leadership of the SBI and the Earth Alliance are used to win the war, and as the extremist/nationalist/you get the idea groups are thrown into the jail, the Earth Alliance walks out of the war, victorious, as the only major power. Instead of going mad with power, the Earth Alliance begins a long and arduous reconstruction process, spreading peace through Earth and effectively establishing itself as the only government in the world.

Centuries have passed, and the Earth Alliance is now in command of a mighty empire. Humans have colonies all over the solar system, have already allied themselves with many more alien races (leading to many more different kinds of humans to the point that these powered humans are now the majority). Things in Earth are peachy fine, don't worry about it- the Special Intelligence Bureau now has multiple branches covering each and every new type of human, for example, and they make sure that no extremist groups rise up to cause chaos once more. But on the 300th anniversary of the first manned trip to Mars, the Earth Alliance is launching the E.A Einstein, a ship manned by the best men and women of the entire Earth Alliance, with the most advanced technology the Earth Alliance has, all of it ready for humanity's first trip into uncharted deep space. A six-year mission that will allow these brave humans to discover new planets and species as they boldly go to where no man has gone before.

Hello, and welcome to "To Boldly Go!"

The idea behind this RP is simple: grab characters from different franchises and put them in a Star Trek-like AU, where they'll be part of an Enterprise-like spaceship, going into adventures and facing off against the wonders and threats of deep space. Like a... wagon train to the stars crossover.

Standard rules apply: don't be a dick, bla bla bla, you know the rest. But a few RP-specific rules must be mentioned:

  • 1. Rework your characters. Don't just copy and paste them from their canon worlds, feel free to change them around, modify their backstory to fit this new universe. Trust me, it's fun!
  • 2. Don't be afraid to ask. As this is a new universe, it's probable you guys will end up wondering if you can do X thing with your character, be it making him a hybrid of a human and some other race or making him part of some odd branch of the SIB, so don't be afraid to ask.
  • 3. Be reasonable. The guys on the ships are the best of humanity. So while they may have their own goals and some flaws, they're not villains. When making your sheet, think that a large group of leaders had to look at it and say "you know what, this guy can get into the first human ship that will go into deep space!"
  • 4. This is based on Star Trek. Don't sign up with Mr. No-Personality. If you've watched even one episode of Star Trek, then you know that a huge part of the show hinges on the personality of the characters and how they interact amongst each other. Don't sign up with a character because he's powerful; sign up with a character because he'll provide interesting interactions with the others.

Let's get to it!

- Some Extra Information -

  • What's the Special Intelligence Bureau?
    • Created to analyse and research more about the supernatural abilities humans unlocked by breeding with other species, the SIB started as a simple way to find out how to use these abilities for everyday/millitary use, but it has quickly evolved into this world's equivalent of the CIA, with powerful operatives performing missions for the Bureau. However, due to the wild differences between each kind of power humans unlocked, multiple branches were created to separate different styles of powers so they could maximize their potential. An example is the Jedi branch, all about spiritual purity, enlightenment and the philosophical implications of their powers and the TSAB branch, all about practical application of these powers, whose operatives are a cross between military specialists and mathematicians.

  • What roles can my character fill in the Einstein? Intelligence, Medical, Science, Navigation, many roles are available for your character!

  • What alien species have humans already interacted with? Remember: these are just some examples, don't be afraid to suggest your own.
    • The Tau Empire: After a complicated past, the relationship between the Tau Empire and the Earth Alliance mirrors that of American and China in the 21st century- while they're ostensibly friendly allies toward one another, and trade freely, they don't really trust one another and are on very strained terms from a diplomatic angle.
    • The Grox: They occupy a huge empire that surrounds the galactic core of the Milky Way, and are fiercely protective of their territory. They'll leave human ships for the most part, as long as they don't try and intrude on their territory. Shooting down a Grox ship is forbidden by the Earth Alliance.
    • The Puppeteers: A close ally of the Earth Alliance, they provide starships and teleportation devices through their company, General Products.
    • The Overlords: Not much is known about them. They seem to like humans, and seem to also like helping humans in figuring out what to do in order to get closer to the greater good... but that's about it. Secretly, they are bringing humanity closer to transcendence so the Overmind can destroy Earth when humanity ascends to join them, with the Overmind being a collection of races who have also ascendeded past physical existence.
    • The Covenant: A multi-race conglomerate dedicated to wiping out humanity. Yep. You see, when the Earth Alliance met the Covenant, the latter immediately declared humans an affront to their Gods, revealing that it was their sacred duty to kill them all. At the same technological level, the Covenant is a recurring threat to the Earth Alliance, but it doesn't reach the overwhelming levels many pundits on holographic television want you to believe.
    • The Yuuzhan Vong: In the first years of the 24th century, the Vong entered the Milky Way, and began their agressive expansion campaign. First, they attacked the Tau empire, but thanks to the harsh resistance, they had to move back to nearby worlds they had conquered. But once they came back, they set their sights on Earth. A fierce war took place, and although Earth lost many cities and colonies, it was thanks to the accidental help of the Covenant that the Earth Alliance won, killing the Vong's Warmaster and his court. Leaderless, the Vong were forced to sign a peace treaty, which remains in place to this day, even if the relationships between the two are still too cold.
    • The Lazans: A race of humanoid lizards, they have a special kind of relationship to the Earth Alliance- and by extension, all other alien races- in that they feel pity for them, seeing them as weak and unfortunate for not being them. Apart from that, their relationship with the Earth Alliance is pretty good- and I hear that the number of Lazan tourists keeps growing every season.
    • The Yautja: A race of hunters, they have allied with the Earth Alliance for the benefits of said alliance- even though they don't like the limits placed on their part, which includes limiting the hunting of intelligent creatures except condemned criminals. It is said that the Earth Alliance banishes their most dangerous criminals to a specially isolated planet where the Yutja can chase and hunt them.
    • The Klingon Empire: The Klingon Empire is an old power in the Milky Way, older by a century than the Earth Alliance. It directly reigns across three star systems in total, and its influence extends to several more. In the name of Kahless the Unforgettable and for the glory of conquest, they expand across space, waging wars that have either destroyed their rivals outright, or cowed them into unequal partnerships. In the past, their combative stance towards diplomacy has gotten them into quarrels with the Earth Alliance, which once broke into a full war. Ever since the Khitomer Accordance, though, the Klingons are at peace with the Earth Alliance. They are allies, though the arrangement has been shaky at times.

[up] It depends. What were you thinking about?

And here's my sheet!

  • Name: Zuko
  • Age: 35
  • Species: Half-human, although he doesn't know this.
  • Appearance: I couldn't find a good close-up shot, so here are some pages that'll give you an idea of how he looks.
  • Role: Security Officer.
  • Personality: Very bitter, Zuko has quite a complex personality. The side you'll often see him displaying is the "perpetual frown" side- that's when he's always frowning, always glaring, always analysing everything, with eery seriousness. At times like these, he's controlling, determinated and will not tolerate mistakes. However, if you do manage to catch him outside of the perpetual frown mode, you'll see a much different side of him: he's controlling, but he does not believe anyone is expendable. He's determinated, yet he will not leave a friend, even if that friend is the only thing behind him and the end of his long journey. He won't tolerate mistakes, but he can still stay by your side and listen to your problems, ready to offer some helping words at the end. This is the result of Zuko's upbringing: he has developed two mindsets, one of a royal- cold, demanding and impatient- and one of a friend- compassionate, mercyful and thoughtful.
  • Skills:
    • Military Expert: Having the best strategy and military teachers money can afford oughta do you something. A skilled strategist, he can easily devise a plan (including what weapon should be used) with only one or two pieces of information. He knows when to talk and when to fight, and has ample knowledge of most weapons humans can get their hands on.
    • Swordsmanship/Martial Arts: But sometimes, you have to use two of humanity's oldest weapons- a sword and your own two fists. Taught how to fight since he was a teenager, he displayed a gift in the art of swordsmanship, which he often uses when there's not any alternatives- because even the stupidest strategist knows that in a world filled with long-range weapons, going close-range can be suicidal.
  • Powers and Abilities:
    • Firebending: Zuko doesn't know this, but he isn't human. In fact, he's half-human, the child of a relationship his mother had with an alien trader, a friend of the family. (more details in the bio) As a result, he has the ability to control fire. The problem? He also doesn't know about that too. Zuko never had a chance to naturally manifest his abilities, which helped sell the illusion that he was a normal human. Once the moment comes and these abilities do manifest themselves, he'll have to train a lot before he can do anything that can be considered "amazing".
  • Bio:
    • Born in what used to be Japan, Zuko's family has a long history with the War. His ancestors leaded Earth Alliance and SIB troops into the fields, and their names are recorded into history books under the "Great Heroes" section. After coming back from the war, Zuko's ancestors partook in some illegal activities, "accidentally" obtaining large sums of money which they used to establish their own village. For generations, Zuko's family lived a royal life, getting the best education, the best food, the best "friends", the best everything money could afford- and by investing into industries, they managed to transform their own little village into the bustling industrial city of New Sozin. Once Zuko was born, everyone thought he was just going to be another petty little royal kid, who'd get everything they ever wanted, and life would go on like normal... until his father, Ozai, discovered that he was the result of a relationship his mother, Ursa, had with an alien trader, a friend of the family, who had appeared not too long ago, interested in opening up a "partnership" with them. He had been staying in their home for a few years, overseeing the production of the illegal goods he wanted to send back home, and he slowly convinced Ozai to adopt more and more illegal practices, which led to him garnering the dislike of the population.
    • Feeling utterly betrayed, Ozai vowed to get revenge, but things remained the same... for a day. Because the next morning, Zuko woke up to find that his mother was gone. And from that moment on, Zuko's life took a turn for the worst. His father started putting him through the hardest classes, saying that he simply wanted the best for his little boy- from day to night, he would study, train, study, train, study and train without a single break. However, the results were quite different. Instead of breaking down and crying, Zuko adjusted to the new routine, and discovered his gift for swordsmanship and his love of military strategy. This horrible routine continued for years, with Ozai and Azula, Zuko's sister, giving Zuko more things to do, to the point he was doing more work than the servants of the house. For those years, Zuko's only friend was his uncle, Iroh, who'd visit here and then from his trips around the world.
    • When he was fourteen, things changed once again. Ozai had already found a new love, and was ready to have a new child- but he didn't want that child to come into an "impure" family. And so, during a visit to one of his factories with Zuko, he fabricated an accident, which led to the destruction of an entire section of the factory and the left side of Zuko's face becoming permanently scarred. Ozai banished his son from New Sozin, publicly defaming him (so he would never get a honest job in this Earth again), as he was forced to go live with his uncle in his ship. You see, Iroh had a peculiar job: he went all over the world and he hunted Fireflies, remnants of the extremist groups that caused the war. At least, that's what the job description said. Iroh's true job was finding these Fireflies, faking their deaths and giving them a chance of living a whole new life.
    • For the next twenty years, Zuko lived with his uncle, helping him in his job. Angry at his father and sister, he continued his hard training routine, perfecting his military expertise and his swordmanship skills. He now had a new mission: he would perform an act that would allow him entrance to new Sozin, where he would depose Ozai and become the new leader of New Sozin, the leader it truly deserved. He gathered up a crew for Iroh's ship, made up of other men and women from New Sozin who weren't happy with Ozai's rule, and travelled all over the world, often visiting other planets to perform missions for the Earth Alliance. So when applications to join the crew of the Einstein opened, Zuko told his uncle his intentions to go and become its Captain, so he would be known as a great space hero, and return to New Sozin to be heralded as a legend. And that's exactly what he did...
    • Except his application for Captain was rejected. Apparently, even with all the things Zuko had done since being banished, his name was still too tarnished to be Captain of the Einstein, and he "didn't have much experience in the field", as the Earth Alliance's reply said. Deciding that it wasn't worth it, Zuko started making plans for a trip around the solar system, until Iroh convinced him to try again, this time for a different position. While Iroh's arguments were good, the one that convinced him was the one where he revealed to him how his mother had run off into space- deep space- with the alien trader, who had been quietly banished from New Sozin at the same time as Ursa.
    • With another reason to join the crew of the Einstein, Zuko made another application, this one for the position of Security Chief. With a recommendation letter from his uncle, detailing how Zuko is an excellent strategist, and how he was just what the Einstein would need if they came across a hostile species or a Covenant ship, Zuko got accepted. And so, he enters the Einstein with many personal goals: to become a hero, perhaps even getting the position of Captain by other means, so they would welcome him back to New Sozin with open arms and to find his mother, who was in deep space, waiting for her.
  • Other: Zuko's quite popular with the ladies. He may use that to his advantage.

@Big Bean: I'm thinking of playing a character I've been kicking around for some time in one form or another. His main role on the ship would be as muscle, maybe as second-in-command to Zuko in security, which works out nicely because this character is An Ice Person and the two can play off each other as Foils.

Name: Nathaniel Shepard

Age: 35

Species: Human

Appearance: A well-built man with a red buzzcut and brown eyes, Shepard is an average looking human with the build of a military man. There are some slight scars from a Covenant attack during his military career around his eyes and chin though unshaven scruff is how he covers up the scars without looking unprofessional.

Role: Second Officer

Personality: Nathaniel is a disciplined military man but also has a sense of humor. While during missions and battles he will become dedicated to orders and focus near-exclusively on the mission, during relaxed hours he will joke around with the crew and wish to learn more about them. Nathaniel is also religious and will pray before he goes to sleep and just before tough battles. Nathaniel is normally a stickler for orders and will try and follow them to the letter but if he feels that an order is unethical or short-sighted, he will disobey it and try to do the right thing. Nathaniel however can seem very bossy and seems to hate the Covenant deeply.

Skills: Leadership, military training, ability to stay cool under pressure and a uncanny knack to understand and use weapons even if they have alien origin.

Powers and Abilities: N/A

Bio: Nathaniel Shepard lived on one of the colonies on the further end of the solar system. His life for most of his childhood wasn't idyllic but Nathaniel developed a work ethic there and cherished the small little colony as his home. His family was one of the earliest travellers to the colonies when the colony system began due to a desire to explore space and learn more about themselves through exploration. Every member of the Shepard family since then has signed up with the Earth Alliance in some form with Nathaniel's mom and dad being scientists staying on the colony for a few decades to observe it and keep an eye on the plant-life and other essential parts of the colony's infrastructure. His uncle is First Officer on the E.A Tesla and has been for a few years. However his life took a turn for the worse after the Covenant attacked the colony while he was 16 years old. Nathaniel was on a trip to the Earth Alliance headquarters taking his first physical exam when the attack stuck, barely sparing him. His uncle adopted him and took care of him for a few years until Shepard became an adult. Once Nathaniel entered adulthood, he joined the military branch of the Earth Alliance. Nathaniel's military record showed a man with dedication to orders, a man who would fight until the very second a retreat is called if one is, and a man liked by his superiors. When rumors of the E.A Einstein was being spread, his current superior recommended Nathaniel for the mission, knowing of his love for exploration and told Nathaniel about it once it was no longer confidential. Once he was told of the ship and his recommendation, Nathaniel politely resigned from the military. He now enters the Einstein preparing to explore, learn more about the universe and himself as well as follow in his family's footsteps. He also figured that a chance to fight and get revenge on the Covenant also wouldn't hurt.

Other: Nathaniel's scars were gotten from a battle while serving the military and he also would love to someday become the Commander of some ship or another.

Alright, here goes my attempt to modify Raynor's back story well enough. I suppose I'll understand if this seems unacceptable, but this is what I was hoping to go with. For the record, this is actually a substantially more tame version of his back story than his original.

  • Name: James Eugene "Jim" Raynor.

  • Age: Approximately 34.

  • Species: Human through and through.

  • Role: Captain.

  • Appearance: Think this link should work...

  • Personality: Despite, or maybe in part because of, a past that would seem contrary at times, Jim is first and foremost a "good guy". He tends to be quiet in personal talks, incidents in his past making him now reluctant to become attached to anyone he doesn't already know; when faced with a group, especially under his command, he's much more charismatic, which is part of what makes him a good leader. He also likes to drink, but does so in moderation unless he starts getting broody about his past. He takes his work seriously, unless aforementioned broodyness starts up, though he usually snaps out of it if anything serious starts to occur.

  • Skills: Jim is a good strategist; he's better at ground operations than ship to ship engagements, but his skill in the latter category is still nothing to scoff at. As mentioned above, he's a good leader at least when it comes to matters that aren't personal in nature. His diplomacy is less skilled, but he knows that the best way to deal with anyone is to first earn their respect, even if not their friendship. (Expect much Kirk-style diplomacy, minus the woman seducing.) He's also a decent marksman, even with weapons that still have recoil, and an expert hover-bike driver.

  • Powers and Abilities: N/A

  • Bio:
    • Jim was born on an Earth Alliance frontier world known as Mar Sara, where life was a bit rougher and they didn't always have all the latest technological amenities. His parents were farmers and tried to raise him to be a good person and a hard worker. Their efforts... did not pay off, at least not at first. It was in his young adulthood that Jim started to become known as more than just another farmer's boy; however, it was not a good reputation. Current history books tend to gloss over the fact that one of the Alliance's top men was, once upon a time, considered a criminal.
    • It had started small, but quickly escalated. Jim, mostly with his partner in crime Tychus Findlay, began a career of high-scale robberies and train heists. With his skill on a hover-bike that Jim had taken naturally to, it seemed like they could never get caught. Of course, they were wrong, but when the law did finally catch up with them, Tychus stepped forward and took all the blame on himself. Tychus was sent to prison for a long time, while Jim got away as a free man, his record clean.
    • The fact that Jim used to be a notorious outlaw became one of those things everybody "knew", even if the official records said otherwise. Everyone expected him to just fall back into crime, but life had other plans for Jim. As it so happened, Mar Sara's governor needed a new marshal to keep the peace, and came up with a rather clever idea; he gave the job to Jim, betting on Raynor's fearsome reputation to scare away most would-be criminals. It worked, and Jim's time as marshal was quite possibly the most peaceful time the frontier world ever knew.
    • Until about five years ago, when rather abruptly a horde of alien locusts descended on the planet and started to consume everything and everyone they could lay their mandibles on. Luckily, an Earth Alliance task force commanded by one Admiral Mengsk happened to be nearby, and Jim was able to direct efforts to fortify and hold the colony's last major refuge until the task force arrived, saving many colonists. The colonists were all transferred to other worlds, but Jim was offered a position in the Earth Alliance fleet by Mengsk himself, and decided to take him up on the offer. Under Mengsk's command, Jim entered into one of many extended skirmish conflicts with the Covenant.
    • It was during this time that Jim learned something just a bit unsettling to him; the arrival of the alien locusts on his former home was not a mere fluke. A section of the Earth Alliance science board was working on something called a "psi emitter", an attempt to replicate the abilities of Alien-Human hybrids using only technology. The emitter was a failure for one thing, and for another just happened to attract said alien locusts like a syrup-glazed slab of meat left in the sun for two days; and of course, Mar Sara had been the location of the psi emitter's first field test. The whole ordeal was considered an accident, and Jim was able to accept that and move on, moving up in the ranks of the fleet and earning a reputation as a good officer.
    • It was just over one year ago that Admiral Mengsk's task force managed to push their way to one of the Covenant's colony worlds; an offensive that Jim was of course a part of. Earth Alliance command wanted them to take and hold the planet normally, explicitly stating that the Covenant civilian population there was not to be harmed. Mengsk wouldn't have it, knowing that the Covenant's religious extremism would cause even their civilians to resist. He came up with a plan, to "do what the Earth Alliance couldn't do", and neutralize the Covenant presence there completely. So he used a psi emitter, and summoned forth the same alien locusts that had devastated Jim's former home. Jim watched in horror as Mengsk condemned every Covenant there to death, soldier and civilian alike. Even the Earth Alliance ground forces that were distracting the Covenant while the emitter was put in place were left behind by Mengsk, who decided that attempting to rescue them wasn't worth the risk. Among those forces was a SIB agent who Jim had started to develop feelings for.
    • While most of the task force left the planet, Jim and a few other personnel who didn't agree with the Admiral's actions managed to seize control of one of the ships, and attempted to rescue the ground forces left behind on the planet. They failed, but they did manage to message Earth Alliance command about Mengsk's actions. The admiral was scheduled for a court marshal that was guaranteed to end with a lifetime jail sentence, but Mengsk was able to flee into hiding with those still loyal to him, and is still out there somewhere. When word about the Einstein and its mission into uncharted space reached Jim, he knew this was his chance to track down Mengsk and deliver justice. Jim applied for the captain position because he wanted to be personally responsible for catching Mengsk; he actually considers himself lucky that he got picked.

  • Other: Jim owns and knows how to use a rather antiquated revolver that still uses physical projectiles rather than energy. It uses both a powder charge and magnetic acceleration, meaning it packs a huge punch. Of course, usually it just sits on a mantle in Jim's office.

  • Name: Atton Rand
  • Age: 29
  • Species: Human
  • Appearance: I've got a bad feeling about this...
  • Role: Chief Helmsman
  • Personality: Laid back, cocky, and prone to jibes, Atton can occasionally rub others* up the wrong way even if he means well. However, he performs well under pressure and with a desire to please those he respects (even if his respect is difficult to earn). Indeed, he can continue to perform his duty even if seriously injured.

One of his less noble attributes is a strong distaste for those who possess special powers - especially the Jedi branch of the SIB, whom he sees as a bunch of hypocrites. Similarly, robots aren't likely to receive a warm welcome, due to an event in Atton's past.

  • Skills:
    • Ace pilot: If it flies, chances are that Atton can pilot it - and probably pull a few fancy stunts in the process. Though it has taken him a bit of time to adjust, there is little doubt that he can work just as well with the E.A. Einstein.
    • Slicer: A skill picked up from earlier days, Atton is capable of hacking complex computer networks and extracting information as needed. Of course, the nature of a network may mean that he finds it more difficult or could even result in him being unable to hack it entirely.
    • Gunslinger: Atton is quick on the draw. Though he probably won't be wowing military sharpshooters, he's talented with a pistol.
    • Echani martial arts: Though it is unknown where and when it occurred, Atton spent time with a dojo specialising in the Echani forms of hand to hand combat. However, this martial art puts emphasis on unarmed combat, and so it is less effective if he is holding a weapon (be it out of choice or necessity).
    • Power Resistance: Using several mental techniques, Atton can make it difficult for others to affect his mind or detect him via supernatural means. Though it's generally ineffective against physical uses of supernatural abilities, it provides a shield against attacks of the mind.
  • Powers and Abilities:
    • Force sensitivity: Though neither he nor anybody else is aware of it, Atton is more attuned to the Force than he realises. The practical upshot of this is that his reactions are a bit faster* than they should be, and if his sensitivity were to be recognised and the man trained he might gain new abilities*.
  • Bio: Born in a city on a (terraformed) Mars, Atton was one of countless children who turned to street gangs and petty crime to get his kicks. Though he had close run ins with the law, he usually managed to get away unscathed. One of the boy's favourite activities was hacking into computer systems, just to see if he could. As he grew older, he gained a new past-time of hotwiring hover vehicles of all shapes and sizes, not to mention actual starships. He loved to show off his prowess in the air with loops, barrel rolls and more, often buzzing his friends (and their homes) as low as he dared to go.

It was after one of these joy rides that he had an experience that would help to define him in later years. A nearby heavy labour robot suddenly went berserk and attacked Atton's friends. Fearing for their lives, the young man desperately fended off the machine with whatever he had to hand, though it was only the intervention of the police that saved them. Even so, one friend was crippled for life after his legs were clipped by a heavy chunk of metal that the labour robot was wielding. Never again would Atton see such machines in the same light.

Not long afterwards, certain planets on the periphery of Earth Alliance space began to be hounded by hardbitten spacers calling themselves the Mandalorians, plundering them opportunistically when the EA's attention was drawn elsewhere. Though the Jedi branch of the SIB were told to find out more about the brigands, it seemed as though they would do nothing to actually stop them, a fact that did not sit well with Atton. Yearning to do something about them, he got his wish when a small party of Jedi led by the enigmatic yet charismatic Revan and his best friend Alek visited his neighbourhood, promising glory and fame to those who went with him to fend off the pirates.

Unsurprisingly, Atton leapt at the chance and went with Revan on his (officially frowned upon) foray into the frontier, serving well under the man's command. When they came back, however, things had changed. For reasons best known to himself, Revan decided to split from the Jedi (whom they already had tenuous relations with) entirely and join the extremist Sith guerrillas. Shocked by this turn of events - but still faithful - Atton was pressed into service in a "elite" special forces unit*

. Even to the Earth Alliance's intelligence agencies it is unknown what, exactly, he did.

After a certain event, Atton became disillusioned with the Sith cause and deserted, being granted amnesty by the EA*

under one condition: that he helped to further the Earth Alliance's objectives and undo the damage that he and his comrades had caused. Grateful, he immediately began helping those places that had been scarred by the Sith. However, he could not help but feel that he could be doing something greater. The opportunity came when he learnt of the Einstein's mission. Promising himself that he would not get fooled again, he applied. Though they were initially unsure, his work to stop the Mandalorians - and his superb piloting - helped tip the balance in his favour, and he was finally allowed aboard.

He wants to see what is out there, but secretly he is also wondering if he might find Revan - who mysteriously disappeared several years prior, much to the confusion of both his allies and enemies - out there. For the most part, though, he is trying to leave his past behind, both literally and figuratively.

  • Other: He enjoys a good card game to pass the time. Atton also keeps a small energy pistol on his person for self defence, though he's convinced that he won't need to use it.

There. I hope it's all acceptable (it's mostly the backstory I'm not sure of)!

Can I yoink the position of Chief Engineer?

Claiming Vice Granscenic and quite possibly the position of navigator/pilot.

I'd prefer if you guys made a sheet first. But I realize you two aalready asked for those roles in the brainstorming thread, so don't worry about it.

I'm thinking of playing a character I've been kicking around for some time in one form or another. His main role on the ship would be as muscle, maybe as second-in-command to Zuko in security, which works out nicely because this character is An Ice Person and the two can play off each other as Foils.

See, here's the thing, I'd prefer if you picked an actual existing character, since that's the point of the RP. I mean, if this was an OC Stand-In (like, let's say, your version of the Dragonborn from Skyrim), I'd be fine with it, but... hrm, you know what? Make a sheet and we'll see.

May there be a Klingon Empire in this game?

You call this "To Boldly Go", yet not one of the alien races is from the Trek universe? For shame!

Never came up during our brainstorming. tongue But sure, I'm OK with the Klingon Empire being there. You want to use them in your sheet, right? If you don't mind, can you also write, in the Other section, about how Klingons have interacted with the Earth Alliance? Thanks.

@Bindle: Nice sheet! Two things: do you want Nathaniel to only be the Second Officer? Cause he can be the Second Officer and be something else too. And the Tesla is not a deep space exploration ship, right? Other that, welcome aboard, Second Officer. You're accepted.

@Firock: Welcome aboard, Captain. You're accepted.

@Flanker: Welcome aboard, Chief Helmsman. You're accepted.

By the way, something I'd like to note is: don't be afraid to suggest plots for the RP. This will be very much like the Original Series, going from one thing to the other as the adventure continues, so if you guys have this great idea that you want to happen on the RP, don't be afraid to put it on the discussion thread (when we have one), and we'll find a way to do it.

Also, uniforms. Almost forgot about 'em. tongue I was thinking something in the lines of the Starfleet uniform... but I'd like to hear your opinions. Anyone has any ideas?

Tempted to play Cloud again because he is way more fun than I ever thought he would be, but perhaps I should branch out more? Maybe an adult Asuka or Aizawa or something.

  • Name: Meta Knight
  • Age: 4082
  • Species: Dreamlander
  • Appearance:
  • Role: First Officer
  • Personality: Meta Knight is a loyal person who values a knight's code of honor. He holds great wisdom and is usually polite to everyone and everything. He holds his cool in the most stressful of situations having ages of experience to rely upon. Despite how serious he can be when the situation calls for it, Meta Knight can relax and enjoys the simple things others do like watching television and playing sports.
  • Skills: Leadership, vast historical knowledge particularly of things from thousands of years ago
  • Powers and Abilities:
    • Dreamlander - As a typical high-calibur Dreamlander, Meta Knight can survive in the vacuum of space for an extended period of time and is otherwise very tough.
    • Dimensional Cape - Meta Knight's mysterious cape can be banished, kept as a cape, or form Bat Wings to give Meta Knight flight and freedom of movement in air, water, or space. It can also hide himself in shadows, keeping him unseen even in otherwise plain sight.
    • Galaxia - This ancient weapon is slightly older than Meta Knight (relatively speaking). The technology that built it has long since been lost, but it acts as a Power Sword with good cutting power, able to throw energy beams, and can engulf itself in fire. The blade can de-materialize into the hilt and back.

  • Bio: Thousands of years ago the galaxy was a very different place. Dreamlanders dominated much of the Milky Way Galaxy and dealt with constant threats of alien invasions. He fought as a leader in a group called the Star Warriors in an extended war against Nightmare and his demon armies. The was was eventually won and Nightmare sealed away, but not before destroying most of the Dreamlanders and their dominance over the galaxy. Dreamlanders were pushed back into their own section of the Milky Way but still continued to live on for many years. With the war over, Meta Knight decided to form a Paramilitary group the Meta Knights to defend Pop Star and the other planets Dreamlanders survived on.

During the time when the Meta Knights were active, Meta Knight fought met and fought a multitude of creatures. In his efforts he clashed swords against the likes of King Dedede, but also against good creatures like the powerful but young Kirby. Kirby's single-mindedness threw Meta Knight into fierce battles which Kirby often won. The first couple times Kirby showed Meta Knight how he'd strayed from the right path. As the Halberd fulfilled its obligations to King Dedede it did many things Meta Knight is not proud of but thought necessary to keep peace and prevent Nightmare from being unsealed. Despite his best efforts, Nightmare arose again and had to be defeated by Kirby. Other powerful creatures similar to Nightmare also managed to make their way to Dreamland. Over the years, Dreamlanders dwindled in numbers until finally their section of the galaxy was taken from them by the then young species the Grox.

With his home gone, Meta Knight wandered off into the stars on the Halberd with most of what few Dreamlanders were left. The following years were difficult as they survived, but eventually the Halberd was destroyed in a raid by unknown aliens of vastly superior technology and Meta Knight was the only survivor. He lived on and carried himself between the stars for an extended period of time offering his wisdom and seeking the strongest opponents to learn from. Eventually Meta Knight found his way to Earth. Hidden in the shadows, he observed the war between the Earth Alliance and its extremists on the sidelines, staying as a virtual unknown. Disappointed, Meta Knight wandered off to other nearby civilizations for many years. But when news eventually made it to him that the human war had long been settled and they were rebuilding, Meta Knight decided to take a look again. This time he saw a race finally building up towards the right path and they reminded the ancient Star Warrior of what Dreamland once was. So he came forward out of the blue and landed his Warp Star on Mars. He formally introduced himself to mankind's official ambassadors. After proving himself to be a capable leader and warrior, and working in a secret facility for months, Meta Knight got himself into the Einstein's crew as First Officer.

  • Other: I wasn't sure so I omitted a couple of powers on Meta Knight's cape. Namely that he could teleport himself with it.

On a side note, I should point out that the Overlords aren't the one that destroy uplifted planets (which would be kind of evil), it's the transcended race that devours it for energy. Sorry for making that vague.

  • Name: Vice Granscenic.
  • Age: 42.
  • Species: Human (mutant).
  • Appearance: Hello there!
  • Role: Chief Navigator. Also pilots the shuttle.
  • Personality: Very much laid back. Vice is, all in all, a nice guy. He likes helping people, is almost always cheerful, and is usually the life and soul of the party. He likes teasing people, but takes his role very seriously, and he hates failing.
  • Skills:
    • In order to utilise his inherent powers, complex mathematical calculations are needed, even with the assistance of an AI (a Device), so Vice was trained do complex mathematics in his head.
    • Vice is a SpecOps sharpshooter, and those only take the best of the best. With slight assistance, he can hit a foe's head a few kilometres away, despite standing on a moving helicopter. And having an ally in the way.
    • Vice is a more than decent pilot, having for once dodged around so much with an unarmed jet so that a pursuing fighter crashed into the canyon's walls. He's no Atton, but he has some aces up his sleeve.
  • Powers and Abilities: Thanks to a mutation, Vice possesses an organ called Linker Core, which produces energy called Mana. In order to manifest that energy, complex calculations are required. Instead of solving an equation every time they want to achieve something, most Mages write programmes, called Spells, into special devices containing advanced AIs. Those spells are activated by voice command, followed by the Mage channelling Mana through the Device, which makes the calculations for the desired effect to appear. Vice himself is specialised in long-range shooting Spells. The end result is usually quite flashy, because the calculations manifest as circles, usually below the caster's feet.
  • Bio: Born in the remote world of Karnarog, Vice had a happy childhood. He doted on his sister Laguna, and happily studied the mathematics required for him to manifest his inherent powers.
Karnarog is situated in a sector poor enough so space pirates won't be interested in it, so when he reached the right age, Vice moved off-sector to Mid-Childa, where a command centre of the TSAB branch of SIB was located, and entered its ground forces as a sharpshooter.
Then the raiders came. Some said they were Mandalorians, but those raiders didn't quite fit the description, and were a bit less... war-like. They were more like space pirates — there to pillage and loot more than anything else.
Wherever their origins may be, those raiders were causing much havoc, so the TSAB mobilised its forces in the area. Vice fought in quite a few battles, somehow surviving despite being targeted time after time. It was at the closing stages of the war against the raiders when Vice was involved in a hostage situation that went pear-shaped: his best buddy was held hostage, and it was up to him to take the holder down. He failed, spectacularly: he missed and shot his buddy in the eye. Correcting his aim a bit, he took the enemy soldier down.
It was only when he returned to base that the realisation hit him. He abandoned sharpshooting and went on to become a pilot; when he heard that the Einstein was in need of an astrogator, he applied, wishing to run away from his guilt.
  • Other: His Device, Storm Raider, usually takes form of a dog tag which Vice wears, but its other form, now seldom seen, is that of a sniper rifle. She can interface with the majority of Earth tech lying around.

@Bean The Tesla was a military vessel in my mind. A decent military vessel but not a top of the line one either. Military greatness is not a common trait in the family so not many would know of the family name. I will also make Nathaniel the Chief communications officer if nobody else wants it.

And also you called me Bindle. [lol]
