"Enjoying their freedom here and voting for a dictatorship for their poor compatriots over there. "

Where have I read that line before? Oh yes, it was on the Front Page of the Bild.

Someone on Tumblr did actually do the math a bit, but since its in German I'll summarize.

3,5m German-Turkish in Germany. Of those 1.5m can vote in a Turkish election. (That's 43%)

Of those, 46% actually did vote, so 19% of the total.

Of those 19%, 63% voted 'Yes' which comes to a whopping 12-13% of the total of German-Turkish.

So can we please the fuck stop blaming every Turkish (or even Turkish) looking person in Germany for this? Its Racist. Its Xenophobic.

And as another German I'd really love if we'd actually consider how it feel's to be under a general judgment, given how even today some people act as if All Germans Are Nazis

So kindly remember Not Every Turk Voted Evet before you open your mouth to blame all of them for it.

And I never ever blamed every turkish person in Germany for it,l please don't put words in my mouth. In fact, many of them have spoken up against Erdogan and his supporters.

I just don't get the hypocrisy of people living here voting for Erdogan and it makes me angry.

I'd contend that many of the yes voters in Germany (or anywhere) did not knowingly vote for dictatorship while, in the case of Germany, enjoying democracy at home. They voted for phrases like:

Erdogan said: "We did not give in, we did not give up. As a nation we stood strong."
And it should be known that the Turkish opposition took to the street almost immediately after the results cam in, which, statistically may as well have been 50-50. Perhaps more of the eligible Germans could've voted, but their lack of care of what went on over there might well be a sign of integration.

[up][up][up] Well, for one, Hitler never had a majority and the SPD did its very best to keep him as bay, with the help of the SPD voters. Two, people back then weren't half as good informed. And three, what hurts about this so much is that Erdogan's main strategy was to call Germans Nazis, insult Angela Merkel and threatened the country in which those people lived. This is like people living in Poland or France voting for Hitler.

There is really no excuse for any voter who was brought up in Germany and voted for Erdogan. If there is one thing every pupil leanrs in Germany, it is how democracy could be transformed into a dictatorship.

Or they didn't believe in Democracy in the first place, and don't mind dictatorship. The lesson they needed was "dictatorships are worse than democracies", but I bet what they heard was "Germans need to be supercareful because when they go dictator it's Nazis", in other words, "only other people get sick".

[up][up] It's really difficult to do so unless you skip school altogether....I remember discussing the Holocaust in Religion, Philosophy, History (at least two times), Politics, Literature (the Wave is pretty much required reading over here...we also discussed "Als Hitler das Rosa Kaninchen stahl" and "Sansibar oder der letzte Grund"), Sociology and even in ART! We also discussed in detail Hitler's speeches when we covered Rhetoric taking apart what demagogy is and how it works. So no, no excuse whatsoever for everyone who grew up in Germany and voted for Erdogan..

[up] Have you ever read "The Wave"? The book is based on a social experiment which was actually conducted on an American High School. The very point of it is to show how easy it is to lure people into a dictatorship and how the seemingly positive effects of it soon turn out to be anything but a good thing.

Two, people back then weren't half as good informed.

I'd contest the truthfulness of that statement, mostly because even today it's pretty well-established that the majorities in most countries, Western or otherwise, are also full of idiots.

If anything, the NSDAP only getting 42% of the vote at its peak is a sad indictment of a world where parties like it often can (and do) win majorities.

Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.

More perfectly innocent, post-Referendum House Cleaning: Turkish authorities block Wikipedia without giving reason

Turkey has blocked all access inside the country to the online encyclopaedia Wikipedia, one of the world's most popular websites.

It was not initially clear why the ban had been imposed.

The Turkey Blocks group said the site was inaccessible from 08:00 (05:00 GMT) by order of the Turkish authorities.

People in Istanbul were unable to access any Wikipedia pages without using a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

"After technical analysis and legal consideration based on the Law Nr. 5651 [governing the internet], an administrative measure has been taken for this website," Turkey's Information and Communication Technologies Authority was quoted as saying.

Blocking websites is a common tool of the Turkish authorities: Twitter, Facebook and You Tube have suffered the same fate several times, and numerous anti-government sites are inaccessible.

Critics say it smacks of Turkey's repression of free speech: over half of all requests to Twitter to remove content have come from Turkey, and the country now ranks 155 of 180 in the press freedom index of the watchdog Reporters without Borders.

Social media was in uproar as news of the ban emerged, with some users speculating that it might be a bid to suppress criticism on President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's Wikipedia page.

One Twitter user noted that the Wikipedia page on Turkey's referendum has a section on "controversies and electoral misconduct", and cites claims that the government suppressed the 'No' campaign through "arrests, control of the media and political suppression".

Turkey has temporarily blocked popular social media sites including Facebook and Twitter in the past, especially in the wake of mass protests or terror attacks.

The government has previously denied censoring the internet, blaming outages on spikes in usage after major events.

Wikipedia has also faced censorship in other countries, including a temporary ban in Russia, and repeated crackdowns in China.

Turkey sacks 4,000 more officials in coup-bid crackdown. Also bans dating shows. I think CNN Turk also said that they're going to create some form of neighbourhood watch with a few thousand members.

'No question' of breaking EU ties: Turkey

It is out of the question for Turkey to break off relations with the EU and it will press ahead with its membership bid, Turkish EU Affairs Minister Omer Celik said Wednesday.

"The picture that emerges after the referendum shows the democratic power of Turkey. This needs to be taken account of well," he said in remarks made in Brussels and broadcast on Turkish television.

The minister repeated that Turkey faced a major terrorist threat but had got through the coup attempt with "a democratic self confidence."

Urging Brussels to open new chapters in Ankara's long-stalled accession talks, Celik said: "We need to come to an era where relations are tighter."

[EU foreign affairs head Federica Mogherini] said last month the accession talks had not been halted — despite calls by some EU member states — but progress depended on Ankara meeting the rights and democratic norms expected of all candidate countries.

Well the Turks can pull off a Shocking Swerve and gall...
