The irony is lost on him, I'm sure.
"Yup. That tasted purple."Oh, is that why people have been referring to a Sultan then? I was pretty sure Turkey was not (currently) a monarchy, even a figurehead monarchy.
I did know about the leader trying to become a life ruler by having the AKP rewrite the constitution.

This is the most surrealist thing I have read in a while. This has to be an Onion-like joke.
A very rough guide to what's going on:
The President, Erdogan and his party, the AKP, are quite forwards with their Islamist ideals. This doesn't gel well with...
...the Turkish military, which doesn't approve of people trying that and has launched coups in the past due to just that. Or the deep state, to be exact.
Any word on the Gulenist influence?

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotYes, "Sultan" is a derogatory term for Erdogan given the latter's dictatorial ambitions.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThe only word on that is coming from Erdogan. I profess skepticism - Gulen really isn't the couping sort.
I just hope this is a secular coup and not one by radical jihadists. We've got more than enough of that crap in the Middle East right now, and if the bridge between the ME and Europe goes the same way Europe is gonna flip out.

I don't get it, why was Erdogan denied landing? If the military has taken over the airport wouldn't they want him to land so they could arrest him? Would be a lot harder for anti-coup forces to fight back then.
Not likely. Turkey was a very secular state until recently and the pro Muslim forces there likes Erdogan

Ease your fears. The Turkish military is absolutely not jihadist - they're Turkey's self-appointed guardians of secularism and constitutional democracy. (In other words, they're like the guys running Egypt right now.)

Was he denied landing from Germany too?
Secret SignatureToo much risk of martyrization. Radical islamist elements don't exist in the Turkish military as far as I know, and it ain't plausible either.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanApparently, yes.
It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.Maybe they think him being in exile would bring less blowback than him being held hostage (creating a "prince in the tower" situation) or dead (making him a martyr and a symbol for his supporters to rally around)?

βAnd the Bunny nails it!β ~ Gabrael βIf the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.β ~ CyranAlso he'd be partly cut off from his resources to mound a resistance to the coup.
And no nation he'd find refuge in has much inclination to restore him.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Turkish Armed Forces appear to be divided in their loyalties - some are pro-Peace Council, some support the Sultan. General Dundar, First Army, is currently leader of the anti-coup forces (or at least is the most identifiable one).
Explosion from TRT headquarters reported.
It's on.
If Russia tried, the army would unite against him and them then and there.

People are supposedly taking over tanks in the streets, Russia 1991-style, but the question is if the demonstrators won't get swamped by counter-demonstrators meaning that the military won't have to make the choice of "back down or risk massacre".
Wild stuff though. Never would have seen it coming.
Apparently Germany denied Erdogan landing rights too? It would be hilarious if so. He's about to learn just how little anyone outside of Turkey itself actually likes him.

Erdogan's attempts to use social media to get the civilian population to take to the streets would be maybe more successful if he hadn't been so enthusiastic about shutting down social media to prevent people taking to the streets against him.
