EDIT! Thanks for everyone who participated, I have enough data now.

Hello fellow Tropers, a moment of your time if you will. It's one of those threads, again; I'm doing a university assignment on mobile phone usage and I'd really, really, REALLY appreciate it if a few kind souls could take a few minutes to fill out a brief long-ish questionnaire. It's basically about mobile phone usage and such for folks 18 to 24 years old, and your input will be invaluable for my research. Some of the questions are rather in-depth and open ended, but brief answers are fine. Thank you!

The questions are as follows;

I think it is because it's a big source of my information, entertainment, and socialization.

My sense of humor has been altered by strange text posts on Tumblr, I can only keep up with shows when I watch them online in my spare time

Naaah

No. that's how im able to keep in touch with all my friends and family because I live quite a ways from everyone and not everyone has facebook or whatever, so sometimes I can only call or text them. Also my apartment doesn't have internet so my phone is the only way to get online atm.

Sure, if I had the money to drive everywhere and do whatever I wanted.

Yes, because I constantly have to check it every ten minutes. I even try to check it when im in the shower or when it's dead. I'm also on my phone so much that I run the battery down every day.

What online services do you use on your mobile phone and what types of activities are you engaging in when you use online services? I don't particularly use internet services, unless it's through an app (Amazon, for example).

How many apps do you have on your mobile? In the region of 50-60, though not all used frequently

Name 3 of your most used apps on your mobile.

1. Facebook

2. Reddit Is Fun

3. MX Player

How many people do you talk to on a regular basis using your mobile phone? Between 10-15

How much do you use your mobile phone in your everyday life? (choose one)

All the time

How much time each day do you spend communicating and using your mobile phone? (record the answer in minutes, hours or all the time) It's hard to say, since it's 95% texting/facebook messaging, something I can just do in a few seconds. Added up, it's probably about 90min on the communication part, but that's spread out throughout the day, plus I'll use the phone for Reddit/etc extensively.

How much time each day do you spend on face to face communication, with whom an where? Most of the workday, due to my reception work, is face to face, as is the wrestling. So if we said 6 hours a weekday for the reception, plus another couple of hours every other day. I'd also mention that I prefer face-to-face over text messages anyway (texts are normally to arrange things), so might as well make it a couple of hours every day at least, on top of work XD

Do you use your mobile phone to escape your problems? If anything, the idea of being constantly at the beck and call of folks you might not want to speak to can make problems worse. Case in point, trying to get over a lass, but she always texts you, therefore not giving you a chance to keep your distance for a little bit and clear your head (and to prove this, she texted as I was writing this very answer!)

Are you bored when you are not using your mobile phone? Nope!

Do you use your mobile phone to get rid of boredom? Can do.

Describe how you feel without your mobile phone. Just wrong. Like I've forgotten to put trousers on or something.

If you lost or forgot to take your mobile, describe how you would feel using 3 adjectives.

1. Lost

2. A bit anxious (that someone is trying but can't get hold of me)

3. Worried (about the cost of replacing it)

Is your mobile dominating your life and interests? Explain how and why. Dominating isn't the word - it's heavily involved in all aspects of my life but it's helping everything. For example, lets look at it's use in professional wrestling. Keeping in touch with the tutor/promoter and the fellow trainees is a given positive. It also lets me record new moves and therefore watch them back to see how they look from different angles. I can also call up Youtube videos of things we mention in class to further explain how things are done.

Give some recent examples of how the mobile phone is dominating your life and interests. See above.

Do you always try to have the latest model of mobile phone? Give reasons as to why. I would like to, but money says no. I just like that the thing I spend so much time using, that helps with all aspects of life, is as capable as it can be. Thankfully, I think the Galaxy S3, despite it not being the newest Galaxy, is one that is more than capable for a while yet.

Can you imagine your life without your mobile phone? Explain your answer. Nope. As I say, it helps every aspect of life so well.

Can life be exciting for you without the mobile phone? Explain your answers. Exciting, yes. Just not nearly as easy.

Would you say that you are addicted to your mobile phone? If yes, please explain why you think this way. Nope. I'm using it very often, but I never, ever let it get in the way of friendships, relationships, etc.

To be fair, a mobile phone isn't required by law or anything, it's a choice if someone wants to own one or not.

23.

Gender:

Male.

Level of education:

University (Undergraduate)

Occupation:

Writer/University Student. I dabbled in being a video artist and animator but it didn't work out, my Photomedia degree might not turn me into a legit Karl Lagerfeld level photographer either.

What kind of mobile do you have?

iPhone 4S, my parents wouldn't let me have one till I was 22 because I'm not a trust fund baby.

Where do you take your mobile phone? (Choose one or more)

To school/University - Yes To work My mobile is always with me where ever I go - I have to take it with me so my parents and immediate family know where I am in case I get hit by a car or die or something.

Where do you use your mobile phone and how frequently? At school - Yes At work - When I get a job finally, yes. In lectures - My disability carer is sometimes late to class so he texts me to let me know he's coming. In tutorials - See above. Everywhere, even if it is not allowed - I'm... not sure I'm going to use it where it's not allowed, but see carer excuse. Other: (please explain) - I WILL EXPLAIN NOTHING!

What do you use your mobile phone for? (Select one or more) To call my family - My family are about the only people who bother to call me other than my carer. To call my friends - I don't get called up by my friends often so I find myself worried whether they've forgotten about me a lot. To call overseas - God no. To send text messages - Yes. To send text message overseas - Why? That's what Skype is for. To take pictures - I'm not interesting enough a person to warrant taking photos during my day, hence why my Photomedia degree was a terrible life decision. To send pictures To take videos To play computer games - I'm terrible at video games and feel alienated from my generation of men as a result. To send emails - Yes To read emails - Yes To listen to music - Yes To access my Facebook - Sometimes, but I use my iPad for that mostly for the bigger screen. To access My Space - HAHAHAAHAHAHAAHH NO. To watch videos - Again, its what iPad is for. Don't wanna drain the iPhone's terrible battery in case of emergency. To use Twitter - Yes. To read Twitter - Yes. To 'follow' people on Twitter - Yes. Other: (please explain) If you answer yes to 'using twitter to 'follow' people, ' who do you 'follow'? I follow internet celebrities even TMZ wouldn't chase down the street but find more interesting, because screw reality television, I want to know what Best Buy bargain basement DVD movie nerds in their basements with cameras are gonna torture themselves with this week. Also I follow a lot of writers if I can. Generally I follow people who are cooler than me, at least in my eyes.

What online services do you use on your mobile phone and what types of activities are you engaging in when you use online services? - Not really sure what that means. How many apps do you have on your mobile? - I use my iPad for apps mostly because of TERRIBLE iPHONE BATTERY THAT STEVE JOBS SHOULD BE POSTHUMOUSLY HANGED FOR. Name 3 of your most used apps on your mobile. 1 2 3 How many people do you talk to on a regular basis using your mobile phone? - My mum, dad and brother, I'm not cool enough to warrant people calling ME, sometimes I wonder whether to bother switching my phone off in the cinema because I'm a boring lonely man who nobody but my parents are gonna call anyway, and chances are they're in the cinema with me just like when I had to get Mum to drive me to see Scott Pilgrim Vs The World so it would make money but it didn't. That's how unimportant I feel to people's lives. How much do you use your mobile phone in your everyday life? (choose one) Very little Moderately - Yes. All the time How much time each day do you spend communicating and using your mobile phone? (record the answer in minutes, hours or all the time) Whenever my parents call me. How much time each day do you spend on face to face communication, with whom an where? (record minutes, hours) I wouldn't know because face to face interaction is very intermittent for a high functioning autistic forgotten about by society. Do you use your mobile phone to escape your problems? - I have problems my mobile phone, and society at large doesn't care about. My identity is moulded by everyone's indifference to my concerns. Are you bored when you are not using your mobile phone? - I have several other shiny things to be distracted by, like my iPad. Do you use your mobile phone to get rid of boredom? - I use it to get out of perilous situations like if I'm stranded in some strange urban area. Describe how you feel without your mobile phone. - Meh. If you lost or forgot to take your mobile, describe how you would feel using 3 adjectives. 1 - My parents can't afford to replace this so I'm gonna be out of pocket for two months paying it off. 2 I'd be concerned about losing my mobile phone contacts if they bothered to call me in the first place. 3 This sucks Is your mobile dominating your life and interests? Explain how and why. Not really. I'd be more concerned about my iPad, which I adore so much that the Chinese sweatshop worker who made it would be moved to tears over my appreciation of the object they were poisoned to death to manufacture. Give some recent examples of how the mobile phone is dominating your life and interests. Do you always try to have the latest model of mobile phone? Give reasons as to why. - My parents can't afford to buy me the latest tech so I run my mobile phones into the ground before I can even dare to ask them for a new one. Can you imagine your life without your mobile phone? Explain your answer. - I kinda need my mobile phone in case of emergencies though. I don't feel safe being out and about without it in case I get lost. Can life be exciting for you without the mobile phone? Explain your answers. - My life isn't exciting in general, and that makes me sad. Would you say that you are addicted to your mobile phone? If yes, please explain why you think this way. - How can I be addicted to a device that doesn't connect me to the people I love half as well as the internet does? The internet is a far bigger concern for me.
