We should definitely run both fortresses. Jawmetal could be a dreamworld for the new one. Dreaming of a mineral rich volcano while stuck in a terrifying wasteland where everything including the weather wants to kill you.

And if we can unlock a magma source, we can use cage trapping and magma dumping to deal with threats. Another reason to use Jawmetal as a dreamland. If we have zombies, magma minimizes the issues. Boat Murdered instead of Water Burned.

I haven't taken anyone off the lists. If we do fire up a new fort it will be a seperate thread from this one at least. I have to sit down and look at the fort as it is now and see what we are working with.

Now for the evil biome fort did we want standard vanilla df or did we want Master Work DF with the extras turned off but the tune up stuff turned on?

I had managed to burn down half the mountain, fend off several trap clogging invasions that required a force to sally forth to clear them out of the door step in my solo play.

Half the populace was unhappy and I was constantly running out of booze. Oh and my trash disposal using lava just one zlevel down caused several dwarves to catch fire and die horribly often falling into lava. I had to tile it over and then do a two z level drop.

My invasions were huge too. Took forever to clear the clogged traps and filled cages. At one point they were over running the traps by clogging them with the dead. I had to use my lava weapon a few times.

Condo and Ringsea. If you guys want to do your turns still in Jaw Metal the fort is still standing. Since you guys elected to skip after Nes passed on we will start back in the list with Condo followed by Ringsea.

Paramythion you have been added to the list. Condo or Ringsea. It is optional for either of you two, to take your turns as they come or we can hold and let Paramythion have a shot at it and see what happens.

Ah. The problem could just be that we haven't done enough game years yet then. NES would only have been the fort's fourth year, right?

I've just realised that I made a terrible mistake when disposing of our vampire as well. If there's any blood left in the shaft, someone should fill it with water and make everyone drink from it.

Indeed. The first few years are not too bad. But the rapid ramp up in wealth brings pretty large invasions and ambushes. The ambushes were nasty.

Engraved on the wall are several pictures and words: 22nd of Hematite,256. -Ringsea's Journal of Many Thoughts.

Today was a normal day, dear wall, if you discount the Giant Louse and Wren attack on the front gate; just as the Elves were leaving, too! The hunters were all out of arrows, and were reduced to bashing the monsters until help came. The swarm flew through the air and over the gates and into a small hail of bolts.

Then we ran out of bolts. The entire fort -even hunters nowhere near the fight- let out a call for ammunition. The swarm left, thankfully, after the first few shots with no casualties on either side. According to our broker we had lots of bolts... But nobody could find them. They were all forbidden, used up, or just not being used for some reason. As the resident Master Metalsmith, I took control of our "reloading" program.

Engraved on the wall are several pictures and words: 18th of Malachite,256. -Master Metalsmith Ringsea's Journal of Many Thoughts.

The Wereraccoon Lespar Genamape has come! It's rampage started with the murder of a hunter's dog. The beast was scared away, but a poor lizardman who just happened to be in the same area when the sun came up was nearly killed! The following night, the beast was killed and the lizardman vanished. Right as the beast was shot down by my new bolts, a new crisis began. A fashion crisis. We're all out of pigtail seeds! How can we survive this travesty until we can order more next winter?

Engraved on the wall are several pictures and words: 5th of Galena,256. -Master Metalsmith Ringsea's Journal of Many Thoughts.

The mayor, in his great "wisdom", has left it up to me to deal with some unsolved cases! Can you imagine? I was already (human)neck-deep in work managing the forges, and he tells me to do something so irrelevant as 2 murder cases? Sibrek Rigothuthmik and Endok Likottaron were apparently killed. I'm not sure why this is a big deal, since they were nobodies killed by nobodies, but it's up to me now. I will make sure SOMEONE is guilty; and I'll do that by asking random Dwarves who they think did it. In other news, Gand Aand R has given birth to a healthy girl!

OOC: Well, that wraps up most of Summer (the file started in early summer) and I'm just getting into Fall. Tune in next time for an exciting conclusion to the Murder Mystery, Missing Munitions, and Pigtails Problem! ...Is it sad that these are the only issues? [lol] Also, who do your Dwarves think is responsible for the murder? I'll convict whoever people blame... Or some nobody.

Looking into the bolt shortage, I found there really was no shortage. The bolts were just either forbidden or difficult to reach. So, I told the carpenters that we needed more bins for bolts, and the miners that we needed more space for stuff. However, the carpenters were already over cluttered with all sorts of cages or barrels, so I had the miners make even more space. Who knew being the Master Metalsmith had so much power over others? In order to facilitate more bins to facilitate more bolts to facilitate more hunting/fighting to facilitate the rest of the fort's survival, I told all the idle Dwarves to either cut down trees or gather bolts from the forest near the gate. Just in case, I suggested that the army go out and look for ambushes. Only a few people (myself included) didn't go out to help, thankfully! And while the miners were already busy, I had them open a quick hole down into the lava and had it designated as a trash heap. Why would we keep all these old Wren corpses to stink the place up when we can burn them?

Engraved on the wall are several pictures and words: 14th of Galena, 256. -Master Metalsmith Ringsea's Journal of Many Thoughts

The Human Caravan is here! Bins of crafts, toys and the like were sent to the depot and the army prepared itself for a possible attack. The Dwarves are still out gathering wood and bolts, so we have to be extra prepared. Just in case, the fort went over some safety procedures: If the Alert "SIEGE!" is called, everyone will remember the following: Run TO the gate; not away. Stay INSIDE the designated burrow(most of the inner fort) and will NOT go out. Do NOT go to grab anything outside the burrow.

Before the Humans even got to the depot, Wren-People attacked! The Forty Thousand was dispatched, and no civilians or traders were in danger. However, the Forty Thousand were not marksdwarves (we have none... This must be fixed!) so it took them quite some time to chase the flying invaders off. In the mean time, a lone kobold was murdered by Jawmetal's Finest. Then another thief was shot by a hunter... And another after. Are these scouts for a larger attack, or a group of thieves? Kirbonum has become a swordmaster, as well. While all of this was going on, our broker traded off a few gems and crafts to buy lots of wood ( we were running low), wood products, booze, foods, and several bins of leather and cloth to help us hold over until we can be self-sufficient on cloth again next year.

It is now Autumn. We have 4793 in Food Stores exactly, so we're in no danger of starvation even with our recent jump to 200 Dwarves (1 out of every 4 citizens is a child! Another 4th of the population includes farmers/crafters). Bolt production is slowing down now that we have hundreds of gathered bolts, and the Fall Fashion Season will go on based on imports rather than our home grown pigtails. We do have a potential new problem, though: There are a few workers complaining that they can't get any more adamantite, so I'll look into that.

Engraved on the wall are several pictures and words: 8th of Sandstone, 256. -Master Metalsmith Ringsea's Journal of Many Thoughts

We're. Out. of. Plump. Helmet. Spawns. And Cave Wheat seeds. And pigtail seeds. What is happening with our farming system that is making i so inefficient? Seeds aren't being cooked, so there is some logistical issue going on here. Hopefully the Dwarven Caravan will so be here. We're out of gold, too. In related news, several Dwarves are complaining of feeling hungry and thirsty constantly, despite our coffers overflowing with food and drink. The big issue is, again, logistics. All the food and booze is kept near the bottom of the fort, but most people work at the top! I've recommended a small food/booze stockpile to be designated on the Gate-level, so that there is less walking involved and production lost on gathering food. The fort's main issues seem to be from not being able to get resources, rather than not having any. Now that I've survived the dirty, cutthroat world of bolt production, collection, and distribution, the Mayor has assigned me to try and reorganize Jawmetal's stockpiles. I'd rather go vampire hunting and solve those murders, but I seem to be best suited for this task. I shall now be known as the Stocksmith. More immigrants, bring up the population to 214. We might actually run out of beds soon, so that's another logistical issue on top of food/booze distribution, as well as making sure our 100s of bolts are getting into quivers. To supplement our food supply, and fight an apparent lack of fat for soap production, several unused animals were sent to be slaughtered. ((Hopefully this will help to fight lag, too.))

A child has taken to a strange mood. I wonder what he'll make in the craftshop... Never mind that! Someone else has been killed by a vampire! It is either the immigrants, or the potential vampire the Mayor has been watching for some time. The Mayor demands I convict for this murder and the two old ones, so I picked the "Potential Vampire" for all three crimes. Just in case, several troops have been stationed in the residential area to look for any more potential murders. In happier news, the caravan is here and we traded for food, booze, wood, seeds, and cloth. The moody child ended up making a generic wooden toy boat. Nothing special. It does have an image of a dwarf who was murdered last year... Considering I just solved that murder, is it a creepy coincidence or a cry for justice? Either way, a temporary Hammerer has been enlisted to punish the murderer. We may very well have to keep him around to dole out more punishments. The vampire scum has been given 601 days in prison on 3 charges of murder. If she survives, she is a vampire and will be killed, if she dies she isn't and it's too late to care.

A new Mayor with exactly ONE friend, no family, and 2 acquaintances was elected. Are the citizens just tired of our current system? Is this there way of rebelling?

The rest of the Fall went on uneventfully. Nearly the entire army is made up of Lords and Masters now.

Engraved on the wall are several pictures and words: 6th of Opal, 256. -Master Stocksmith Ringsea's Journal of Many Thoughts

The vampire has been locked up tighter than any other convict in the fort's history. Meaning we put in a door, of course. The mayor has expanded to Fort Guards to 3 untrained and unequipped members by design; their soul purpose is to just watch out and apprehend criminals in a mostly undercover way. The Guard is supposed to stay weak enough to never be a threat to the army in the off-chance they decide to stage a coup, but just strong enough to deal with internal threats so the actual army does not have to.

Despite buying all the seeds we could, I still hear complaints about the lack of seeds! I've done a lot to try and organize our logistical system, but the fort is built around the people living on the bottom, and the work all being on the top; causing a lot of traffic. It might be worth investing in fixing that issue.

Engraved on the wall are several pictures and words: 16th of Opal, 256. -Master Stocksmith Ringsea's Journal of Many Thoughts

For exactly one day, the lakes froze over. We nearly lost 3 Dwarves to the thaw early the next day, including myself, but we all escaped with no casualties or injuries. The search for bodies still continues, turning up a kobold nobody could remember killing when they swarmed the gate a few weeks ago. My best guess is that she died in the frost/defrost. The winter is going to be mild, it appears. Thankfully, this could allow us some time to gather wood and plants from the surface. In an attempt to fight cluttering of the masonry and carpentry areas, I have designated a large area to be mined out for furniture storage. More births bring us up to 215 Dwarves, with 58 children. In a few years, Jawmetal will have a large, powerful workforce with many experts from moods and possessions. This will be the largest single home-grown generation that I can remember. As for the vampire, I have confirmed she is indeed a vampire. She has not had any alcohol for months... Despite having constant access to it when she does her job. I do have the suspicion that she did NOT commit the murder, since she was clear on the other side of the fort when it occurred, but the fact that there have been no more deaths since her incarceration puts a lot of evidence against her. Clearly, I am to be credited with solving the murders of 3 innocent Dwarves over 3 years and for the creation of our new Fortress Guard. If anybody thinks they should be equipped I'd be willing to do it, but I'm not going to bother with it for now. Another birth as I write this. 216, now. What's in the booze here?

Engraved on the wall are several pictures and words: 4th of Obsidian, 256. -Master Stocksmith Ringsea's Journal of Many Thoughts

The new furniture stockpile is being filled up! This should allow for our workers to have more space and thus more productivity in their workshops. As a side project, I turned an unused room full of beds into a public dormitory to house future migrants and the growth of our population. An open hole down to water was in the room, so I had a well put it. Being in charge of our resources includes our Dwarven resources, right? 217 Dwarves following another birth. Seriously? Our population could very well reach 300 in a year if the birth rate stays the same and more migrants show up. A baby just died of thirst/neglect... Because the mother was giving birth to another baby at the same time.

Engraved on the wall are several pictures and words: 13th of Obsidian, 256. -Master Stocksmith Ringsea's Journal of Many Thoughts

The year is nearly up, and I feel as though I've done a lot to help my beloved fort. It's the small things that make the most difference, after all. This year was very peaceful with only 2 deaths (murder and thirst) and an uncountable amount of births. I've been managing resources and logistics to the best of my ability, but I think I'm ready to let somebody more qualified work to help the fort in every capacity, rather than just mine. The resource with the most expansion was our Dwarven Resource: Babies. Out of a population of 217, 60 are children, and most are nowhere near adulthood. They will be a drain on an already poorly distributed system of resources, and we're running our of vacant bedrooms. Whoever takes over has the following issues to deal with:

  • Traffic
  • Population Growth
  • Lack of Stockpile Space
  • Keeping the armed forces armed.
  • Potential vampires still in the fort.
  • Mass immigration and possible sieges with our new found wealth.

I'm content to just go back to my metalsmithing.

OOC: This was fun. Nothing major happened, but I still enjoyed running it. Somebody needs to commit an Infanticide or else we'll all drown in babies. Maybe send them outside and hope for a siege? I'll have the save up in a minute...

Hopefully this works: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=8084
