I looked at the page for pirates and looked around the internet, and there is such a dissapointingly small amount of games baised on pirates, and the ones that are dont have much variety, and a lot of the pirate games there are are based on an already existing franchize, like Pirates of the Caribbean.

why do you think that is? especially with these big open world games trying to give you more freedom.

Well, you see, pirates aren't very popular these days. They constantly steal and download whatever torrents or files they want off the internet these days without even paying for it, and so, then, why would someone want to make a game about the very people that hurt said game's very indust—

Oh, I'm sorry. You meant those other pirates, didn't you? Heh heh, heh... Oh boy.

Seriously though, if you want more games based on pirates, there's actually an entire game series called Pirates, though I don't know much more about it then that. And there's always Monkey Island...

Sid Myer's Pirates is pretty fun, though very old. I wish they'd make a sequel. I'd love more Age of Sail/Naval combat in general. You could do so much with it.

I believe Age of Empires 3 has a lot of pirates and pirate-based units since it takes place in the new world in the age of sail.

I blame the ninjas.

No, seriously, look at how many ninja games there are! It's a conspiracy, I tell you! The ninjas have managed to out-manuver their pirate nemesis to come out on top in the gaming market!

(Yeah, I really have no idea. I have a couple suspicions though. Ninjas are easier to pull off as a "lone hero", pirates generally have to account for crews. Ninjas can be slotted into existing popular game styles, pirate games have to be more inventive. Ninjas have a romanticised history where the reality is that they came from an underclass opposing feudal rulers, pirates have a romanticised history where the reality is they were criminals.)

[up][up] Excellent idea, I should play AoE3 more

[up] The most of the game developers that tried to collaborate with pirates to create games based on them were killed by ninjas.

The few that managed to get a hold of them couldn't finish the job anyway due to contracting scurvy and being robbed blind.

There's Mech Warrior 3: Pirate's Moon, but good luck getting that to run on a modern system.

I think there's three main problems: First, pirates operate in groups, while most games have you playing as a single character. Second, fighting on ships doesn't allow for much inventive level design. Third, sailing really isn't very interesting to most people

Basically, they don't adapt to most videogame genres well

[up] Though the sailing would pretty much be an excellent excuse for the "Go to WILDLY different places" thing lots of video games got going on.

I think a pirate game (space or naval pirates, either one) could be pretty well done if you had a decent balance of away missions (so to speak) and ship exploration/combat. Have the away missions be squad-based — maybe something like the way Mass Effect did it — and the ship stuff be partially AI and partially player-controlled. Maybe allow the player to take over certain positions aboard ship if the AI is not handling them to his satisfaction.

I remember I once talked to one of my friends back in 2011 about an idea I had for a Rockstar Games-style pirate game. Open-world, on an island, a few pirate ships here and there. Tons of quests where you kill and loot and do stuff for other guys. I just don't know how the combat would play out. Most pirate guns only hold one round each, if my (very limited) research is correct. So it'd mostly be with swords and all that fancy stuff. Other than that, I think that if they could take their GTA format and make it work with cowboys, it could probably work with pirates.

I figure I should insert a plug for Guns Of Iccarus Online here. It's Sky pirate battles and your multi-person crew fights other ships.

Video.

Can't believe I forgot to mention this one.tongue Anyone remember Skies Of Arcadia? It takes place in a fantasy-world, but it still very-much involves pirates. Flying pirate ships, eyepatches, searching for Discoveries, shipp-battles, the works. All while a little grey round thing follows you wherever you go, and fillets enemies on your behalf. You even get to build your own pirate base. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this game very much qualifies as a Pirate game.

Oh good, someone else already recommended Zack And Wiki.

I suppose you could kinda count the Wario Land games? The antagonist is a pirate at least.

Quoth Dr Tentacles:

I have trouble parsing this sentence. Either you think the 2004 version is old, or you don't think it's a sequel.

...Wait, 2004? You're right, it is kind of old. Damn, time flies fast.

Final Fantasy XII and its gaiden game, Revenant Wings, are all about Sky Pirates, with Balthier, Vaan, Penelo and the bunny girl whose name I can't remember but whose figure I can't forget all taking that role.

Probably same reason why there aren't more vampire hunter games actually about hunting vampires: Really obvious ideas escape people.
