Okay, I have a week-long family reunion/vacation coming up that will include two kids, just out of second and fifth grade (8 and 11 for non-Americans). I'm looking for suggestions for good games to bring. At these things we end up playing Yahtzee (a favorite of my grandmother) and Apples to Apples a lot. These can be fun, but I'm more a fan of more hobbyist style board and card games than the mainstream ones, but I'm also not familiar with ones that will work for kids in elementary . I'm seeking suggestions. So far I'm thinking maybe Carcassonne or Ticket to Ride.

One Thousand Blank White Cards is great for creative and energetic types of all ages, and approximately cheap as dirt.

Dawn of Worlds is free and, while it might require a bit of effort keeping their attention, is very simple and fun. You basically just make a world and the rules are very basic so it allows them to go nuts. If they start warring though, you'll need to play the final word to decide who wins the fights.

The first Kung Fu Panda video game is pretty fun. I enjoyed it, at least. (this coming from a 19-year-old)

I have two kids age 7 and 9. They love Carcassone, as well as Settlers of Catan. With a little encouragement, they can manage Last Night On Earth, though depending on how well they handle horror you might want to give that one a pass*

. Some card games, like Uno or Phase 10, are good too.
