A top five of Square games for me would probably be, in no particular order: FFV, FFVI, FFVII, Chrono Trigger, and Chrono Cross, though I've enjoyed most of the Square games that I've ever played, both before and after the merger.
Somehow you know that the time is right.FFVI
FFXIII
Drakengard(It counts I think)
PM box is Closed, Indefinitely Friend Code: 3368-4181-6850For me, the holy trinity of Square games is Xenogears, Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy Tactics.
I played and loved Final Fantasy VII (and completed it - getting my gold chocobo through breeding and all that stuff), also Final Fantasy VIII - which I learned later to hate because it robbed Xenogears of the money that it needed to finish because Final Fantasy Degrassi High IN SPACE!!! was going well over budget. I liked Final Fantasy IX but never managed to finish it.
But none of them compare to the first three I mentioned.
My Top Five
Honorable Mentions
- Rad Racer
- Final Fantasy X 2
- Kingdom Hearts
- Bushido Blade
- Every other FF is roughly around the same ranking.

Square RP Gs? I've only really played through Chrono Trigger, and preferred that over what little I've played of FFIV because of avoidable battles and less grinding. I do want to hop back to it someday though.
- 1. The World Ends With You
- 2. Final Fantasy XII
- 3. Kingdom Hearts II
- 4. ???
- 5. ???

So it's interesting to watch the tides change. Back when I first got the internet in 2003 I visited many a forum and Square was almost universally beloved. I didn't go over every board on the internet with a fine-tooth comb so I'm sure there were some detractors but I would say the overall appreciation for Square was much greater back then than it is now. People were singing their praises for how they produced a number of the top entries during a period which some might call "the Golden Age of JRP Gs". SNES-era FF, FFVII, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy Tactics, Secret of Mana, Parasite Eve, Super Mario RPG...the list of beloved games made by them in this period is pretty lengthy.
But I also recall some people back then bitching and moaning about Final Fantasy. If a topic of "the Best JRPG" came up and someone said Final Fantasy anything, you might hear a few people responding with "only n00bs think FF is the best. It's just the most popular and nothing more."
People like that are jackasses and I'm ashamed I used to be one of them but I like to think I've grown since then. I no longer hate something simply for being more popular than my favorites.
Nevertheless I thought this might make an interesting topic. How does Square's most popular (at least in terms of the whole world) franchise compare to their other games? Like, if you were to list your Top 5 Square Games, how many of them would be Final Fantasy's?
I personally prefer Xenogears to any Final Fantasy game but I have yet to play a lot of the other beloved Square JRP Gs of yore.
