And synthesised with local tribal faiths as well, if I remember correctly?

Keep Rolling OnIn a big way, yea. That's why the whole "rape young girls" and "eat albinos" thing is still going around, along side poaching of rhinos for their horns and such things.

I'm baaaaaaackDood, Popes used to poison each other. The teachings of the Chruch and what people actually end up being inspired by it to do are two very different things. Sort of how one of the first things the Union of Socialist Soviet Republics did was dissolve the Soviets. Or how the US Constitution says all men are born equal and yet several Presidents were slave owners. Or how the ISIS guys are committing genocide against religious minorities even though one of the first rules of Islam was that People of the Book were to be left in peace. Or how Arabs were racist and domineering in the Islamic empire even though God says "There Is No Difference Among You Except For Faith". Or how we still have tribes and nations to this day even though Muhammad had abolished all that shit and there was just One Islamic Nation. And they'll do all these fundamental transgressions and still take proud in their FAITH and in being GOD-FEARING people and PIOUS and all that empty bullshit.
Given this kind of sustained and willful insanity, choosing to murder and rape people over wearing a condom because of the Church hardly strikes me as surprising. Though the Church can hardly be blamed for not foreseeing this consequence, because human madness is weird like that, they can be blamed for not making specific, conspicuous and deliberate efforts to condemn and denounce it, and remind its followers in Africa that, yes, indeed, murder and rape and even spreading a mortal disease are much worse sins than using a freaking condom.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Well then, you can't blame the church for the action of lunatics.
You're going to blame the ones trying to do good for others completely misunderstanding the teachings and corrupting them? Then you'd better have a problem with every philosophical school of thought to ever exist.
Every organizations has had problems at some point.

I'm baaaaaaackNo, but you can blame it for not doing more about them.
It can't be blamed for the actions of the Mafia, no matter how much those assholes hide behind Catholicism as a source of legitimacy. But Francis went and actually directly and publically denounced them and warned them they were on the path to Hell. He put them on the spot. It was the right thing to do. It should have been done a long time ago. It's the kind of thing the Church should do more often. Single out people who do crazy things in its name, and denounce them.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Alright well that's fine and dandy but it's still not the church's fault for the lunatics running around in Africa, which is what this line discussion was about.

I'm baaaaaaackSame deal. Should make a point of denouncing them. Right thing to do. Every bit helps. Stands nothing to lose. Should do it. No-brainer.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that....yes. We've established that.
I'm baaaaaaackUh, Joe? The poaching of animals specifically for body parts is mainly to sell the stuff... to China rather than for local use. And, this has been the case for centuries. China used up its own e.g. rhinos, lions and elephants quite a while ago (and yes, it had versions). <_<
African use of bushmeat is typically as meat. For muti, it's the monkeys and primates that usually get it in the neck. Or, in the case of some stuff... pets, stock and children of specific human primates who hold power over you... if you can't get parts of them (such as the dust from their sleeping area, hair or nail clippings).
The vast majority of muti is made of plants and aphid, ant or bee secretions. All brewed up in beer-like forms that take a lot of taste-acquiring. >_< Other "insects" may happen (scorpions and spiders, for example). Snake venom, too. <_< Please note: a lot of these kind of things get investigated by pharmaceutical companies...

Dom Justo Takayama's feast day is today, Feb. 3.
I'm reading this because it's interesting. I think. Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot, over.Oh, really? I didn't know. I gave a bad example, as it's other animals more often than rhinos, but still.

I'm baaaaaaackSo there's a badly-sourced rumour going on that the second biggest shareholder for Fabbrica d'Armi Pietro Beretta SPA is the IOR. Can't find any actual sources to confirm or deny this.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.IIRC Beretta has been owned by the Beretta family since its foundation in 1526.
Schild und Schwert der ParteiSo, how did the hangout go?
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesFellow lambs, I believe this thread might as well be renamed the "Pope Francis Appreciation Thread". He just ordered opening the vatican archives on the last Argenitian dictatorship: Califero, Argentinian ambassador at the Holy See, informs that the documentation will be accessible through a j subpoena, discovery request, or other lawful proces. Or something like that, I'm not sure I got the translation right.
So, what, the Vatican's normally above subpoenas?
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.Well yeah, it's its own country so no foreign court has jurisdiction there.
"And the Bunny nails it!" ~ Gabrael "If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we." ~ CyranI thought as much. It's a nice thing to do, for sure. The man has accrued massive political capital, and is putting it to tremendous use.
I wonder, how do the rank and file in the Church feel about all this?
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. The conservative side is not fond of him, but the more liberal side is pretty much with him, when it comes cleaning the house of financial shenanigans or paedophilia.
In terms of foreign policy and peace efforts, he gathers support and respect from both sides.
In terms of the specific Argentinian situation, there are no significant conclusions yet.

I like our new Pope so much that it stings (extra) when he does or says things I don't disagree with.
Plants are aliens, and fungi are nanomachines.By opening the door to all manners of legal requests, including subpoenas, he is allowing for any person to access the information based on their countries' legal options. Not everyone has a FOIA or something like that.
Also, it's a paper trail for whomever does request it. The Church will know who is asking for it and why so that they can be in the loop.
I don't think the Pope is being shady. Rather I think this is a way for him to also find out what others have been trying to hide from him.
"Psssh. Even if you could catch a miracle on a picture any person would probably delete it to make space for more porn." - AszurI'm betting there are a few people sweating bullets as a result of this.
They should be. I'm just glad he's also willing to act on the information and is defrocking people who are being frauds. I wish he was our president.
"Psssh. Even if you could catch a miracle on a picture any person would probably delete it to make space for more porn." - AszurGotta remember the Pope is from Argentina, too, so there are his personal interests there.
Not saying that is a bad thing. Argentina is in dire need of some transparency in its politics. I am not going to decry a good thing over a personal interest like that, and he has done more than enough to show his interests lie not exclusively there.
So uh...really. Does anyone know how his webstuff went?

I think there's a problem, here. Africa isn't the hotbed of Catholicism you guys seem to think. A hudge wedge of it is Protestant of various descriptions. Increasingly of Southern evangelical movements gone even more bonkers than you're used to in the States... as the real loonies go over the Atlantic for
