Apparently the anime for this started this season and not in the summer like I thought for some reason. Anyway, thread. Standard spoiler rules etc.

The pacing is kind of weird and rushed. Not much is explained. I guess they had to hurry to fit in the general premise of the story. I still can't make myself like Hinohara.

I've read some of the manga this is based on. Though I did skip the first volume as my high school library only had volumes two and up. Have you read the manga and if so how does the anime compare to it?

I've read the manga. It has some decent ideas but the execution always seemed pretty flat and the main character is one of those angsty twits. If you want a direct comparison to what we've seen, the anime sped through this material quickly and skipped some of the tone setting stuff like showing how Hinohara and Suguru met or Kadowaki bullying him.

Okay. Do you think it was done well despite the rushing done?

Well, the early events like that don't really matter much, so I don't mind those being cut. It did leave the presentation kind of chopped feeling, though, and did failed to establish some other somewhat important things like Kadowaki's characterization and history with Hinohara. It did okay, I suppose.

Yeah, even without having read the manga, it's easy to see that the first episode was rushed, to its detriment.

While I was watching it, I was just wondering what the deal was with Arata's classmates. Like, they just seemed pointlessly horrible and the one guy was actively malevolent.

Not Three Laws compliant.

Given what we've seen of him so far, it's little wonder that everyone hates him.

Episode 2: Still setting up the plot.

I kinda wish the story focused on the other Arata.

Episode 2 isn't bad, it's just alright. These villains are very punchable, and I think I'll keep tuning in to see them ruined.

Episode 4: Arata's magical sword can now turn into another magical sword. Yey!

Episode 5: Two things of note: the war between the 12 Sho, and the segments with other Arata.

Episode 6:

Hinohara Arata at his most pathetic.

Other Arata boisterous as usual.

Episode 7: Other Arata is the only good part of a poor episode.

Episode 8: Jerkass bully guy at his most pathetic. Boring stuff about him becoming consumed by hatred and evil and crud.

One thing to look forward to for next episode is Kotoha finally realizing that Hinohara is not the Arata she knows.

I wonder if I'm the only one who hoped Hinohara would go the dark side and Kannagi would just keep the darn sword? Is the manga better? The premise seemed interesting in the first episode or two(and the manga seems pretty long), but it hasn't seemed to really click so far for me at least.

Seems like the manga is better, but only slightly. Definitely not worth slogging through 180+ chapters for.

Episode 11: The poor execution makes Yorunami's mommy issues look pathetic.

Episode 12: Meh.

Yorunami's Zokushou all submit to Arata without even settling matters with their families and towns.
