The General Religion, Mythology, and Theology Thread

Go To

Since we've gotten told to stop talking generally about religion twice in the Homosexuality and Religion thread and were told that, if we want to talk generally about religion, we need to make a new thread, I have made a new thread.

Full disclosure: I am an agnostic atheist and anti-theist, but I'm very interested in theology and religion.

Mod Edit: All right, there are a couple of ground rules here:

  • This is not a thread for mindless bashing of religion or of atheism/agnosticism etc. All view points are welcome here. Let's have a civil debate.
  • Religion is a volatile subject. Please don't post here if you can't manage a civil discussion with viewpoints you disagree with. There will be no tolerance for people who can't keep the tone light hearted.
  • There is no one true answer for this thread. Don't try to force out opposing voices.

The whole the world will end in fire thing is based on the flood story where god tells Noah because he destroyed the world first with water he would do fire next.

What about scientists?

I'm reminded of this site that lists dozens of ways the world could end.

It used to work a lot better and the pictures were all there...but I guess the author quit working on it once he put it all into a book. ;p

And only in Dutch. Hmph.

Well, and Revelations also makes several references to the "lake of fire," which awaits the Beast and sinners alike.

Earth, the planet, will come to a fiery end in some ten billion years, when the expanding red giant phase of our sun engulfs it and it's vaporized. Billions of years prior to this, it will become uninhabitable due to the sun's increasing temperature. Of course, I doubt that's the specific end these folks have in mind.

I wonder how is he planning to end the world with Heart

Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.

I don't recall God in the bible saying he'd end the world with fire, merely that he wouldn't end it with water again. In fact, in context he's declaring that he won't ever end the human race, no matter how much we come to deserve it.

“As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.”

Also, I'd argue the events of Revelation are not the 'end of the world' per say-as humanity not only survives but actually comes out better for it.

Well The long form of "the end of the world" is The End of the World as We Know It which actually does fit the bill for Revelation (it is the end on age for our world and the beginning of another), but I suppose that's quite a mouthful

Precision trumps concision.

So, can DC heroes be considered Gods in the pagan sense? They seem to be often billed as such...

[up]I think the fact that most of them are mortal would be a big blow to their godhood.

[up]Well, come to think of it, I have heard it be said that comic book heroes are kind of the modern day equivalent of mythology, which would actually give the superhero god theory some credit.

I'm pretty sure Superman isn't going to die of natural causes any time soon. There's also that DC one million thing where he spent millennia in the centre of the sun and came out all gold and stuff.

in some stories superman ages, but kind of slowly. he looked like he was in his late 40's in batman beyond when bruce was a visibly aged old man.

as with most superheroes in the big two's stables, it's Depending on the Writer.

DC has a tendency of playing up that angle, but even when they don't it's kind of self-evident.

There's a famous black spiritual song that contains the verse: "God gave Noah the rainbow sign/no more water but the fire next time." (James Baldwin later stole that line to title one of his books.) Even though it's not Holy Writ, I think it might have crept into popular religiosity, where it's sometimes misremembered as Scripture.

You can tell the story of Noah was written by someone who'd never been out of the middle east because they thought forty days of rain would be enough to flood the planet.

Round here we call that "March and April".

There are mortal gods though- Look at the Norse ones, or the Egyptian. They can die or be killed. Doesn't make them not deities within their own faiths.
